School is a very inconvenient form of 'childcare'

The hours just dont match for 9-5 working. Then the holidays are much longer, and everyone at work wants those same days.

I can see that nursery 8-6 is much easier for work, everyday except xmas week.
Or more jobs that fit school hours.
Compress the hours into fewer says of the week

It's not childcare though, it's school Confused

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 11/09/2014 19:27

You seriously want to ask this.........? Hmm

itiswhatitiswhatitis · 11/09/2014 19:28

Erm what pixie said

Mintyy · 11/09/2014 19:28

True.

As everyone always says = it's easier to work when your children are pre-schoolers and need formal childcare.

PixieofCatan · 11/09/2014 19:28

I do agree that it must be almost impossible to manage sometimes btw, but ultimately, it isn't childcare at the end of the day.

SoonToBeSix · 11/09/2014 19:29

Yes because it is education

PortofinoRevisited · 11/09/2014 19:29

Has this just genuinely occurred to you?

Brightbutchilly · 11/09/2014 19:30

It's not meant to conveniently look after your DC while you work, it's meant to educate them...

IneedAwittierNickname · 11/09/2014 19:30

My job isn't 9-6. I need this childcare to run from 6am-2.30pm or 12 noon-9pm

Oh no wait, it's not childcare Hmm

KnappShappeyShipwright · 11/09/2014 19:30

I work nights one week in three, school during the day is a major inconvenience for me. Maybe 24 hour wraparound care is what we're after? Hmm

Thefishewife · 11/09/2014 19:30

It's not childcare it's education and I think that the teachers and minsters need to drive this point home when parents moan about inset days ECt

dalekanium · 11/09/2014 19:31

But job seekers stops when youngest child gets to school age, so that would suggest the government think school is childcare?

skinoncustard · 11/09/2014 19:31

School is not some form of cheap childcare .

Mintyy · 11/09/2014 19:32

Hang on, op put childcare in quote marks in her thread title! I read that to mean that she doesn't literally think of school as childcare. No need to point out the obvious!

dalekanium · 11/09/2014 19:32

Starts ffs, not stops

Blondieminx · 11/09/2014 19:32

There is a definite disconnect between the number of school hours jobs and the government's push to get more people into work.

People can't be in 2 places at once, and someone has to feed the kids, check & support with homework and bathe the little darlings.

The fact that most school hours jobs are both low status and low paid is very depressing Sad

Ronmione · 11/09/2014 19:34

Whilst it not childcare, people are always pretty keen to tell sahp to get back to work now their children are in schooll

Stopmithering · 11/09/2014 19:35

You chose to have children

morethanpotatoprints · 11/09/2014 19:35

I totally agree with you, the day is very long for what they actually do, which gives the conclusion it is part educational and part child care.
As far as childcare goes it isn't very work friendly.
We found the best education for us was H.ed it takes half the amount of time school takes to educate them and we don't require childcare.

Wailywailywaily · 11/09/2014 19:35

Well it's a damn sight cheaper that private nursery even when you add in after school club and holiday clubs. I for one celebrated the ease on my pocket when DS started school full time

Mintyy · 11/09/2014 19:36

Ah, classic excellent contribution from stopmithering.

I'm gonna copy that and paste it as my reply on 95% of the threads on Mumsnet Grin.

gordyslovesheep · 11/09/2014 19:37

boarding school might be one solution op Hmm

LokiBear · 11/09/2014 19:38

The expectation is that parents pay for wrap around childcare so that they can work. Many teachers use wrap around care for their own kids whilst they are teaching yours.

MoreCrackThanHarlem · 11/09/2014 19:39

I totally agree with you, the day is very long for what they actually do

Can you explain this further?
The days are extraordinarily full at the school I work in.

LynetteScavo · 11/09/2014 19:39

It's school, not child care well DD's year three was free child care

Most schools offer wrap around care. DDs after school club closes at 5.30. DH finishes work at 6pm an hour away. That's a bit inconvenient.
