I think I might head somewhere fairly rural, just in case.

SantanaLopez · 12/09/2014 22:04

I don't think it will be that bad Chelsy.

Because Glasgow is last, and big, it could well be that we won't know the result until the very last count.

Roonerspism · 12/09/2014 22:09

I'm worried about violence too.

There might be real civil unrest in the next while if the no vote wins. (I'm sorry if this offends, but no one can deny the aggression displayed by some of the yes campaign).

I would remove all no stickers from windows before the result, no matter which way it goes.

StatisticallyChallenged · 12/09/2014 22:26

I'm worried too. I think it could get ugly easily - it doesn't take a huge number.

ThePlatypusAlwaysTriumphs · 12/09/2014 22:28

New to this thread but not this debate.

I'm a yes voter. I have looked very closely at both campaigns, but in reality was always biased as I have voted for independence since I was old enough to vote some 26years ago. I never thought honestly I would see it in my lifetime, and until recently didn't believe this referendum would ever go the way I wanted.

It's nothing to do with being anti-English, for my part. first and foremost I believe that a smaller country managing its own finances is more accountable.

I know that if we did get independence there would be lots of problems/ issues to iron out/deal with. Same as when I left home - it was less easy for a while than living with my parents and getting pocket money but ultimately more rewarding.

3 years ago I decided to leave my employment and start my own business. risky, yes, but with a view to better future. it was hard work at the start, but 3 years later I'm far far better off than I was. You look at the probabilities and sometimes you have to risk a little to gain a lot.

Yes, ok, maybe I'm a bit idealistic, but I would be happy to pay slightly higher taxes to live in a fairer country. I think Scotland has a lot of potential, and I feel sad that so many people don't believe in that potential. And it's not just about bloody oil! Renewable energy - Scotland has so much potential. We have a great manufacturing history, a great tourist industry, food industry among others. it might take time, but I reckon for every company that leaves Scotland there will be another forward thinking company to take its place.

I'm really worried about staying part of the UK because I don't like the way the UK is going. I don't want ukip, I don't want privatisation of the nhs, I think we're heading out of Europe regardless of what Scotland votes. I feel our best chance of a prosperous future is as an independent country, quite possibly working with the rest of the UK on important issues, but controlling our own finances and policies.

Still not believing it will actually happen, though!

deeedeee · 12/09/2014 22:32

Hello worriers! I see you've stopped worrying about money and are now worrying about people coming together to celebrate and commiserate something hugely important! You have such little faith in your fellow humans it's no wonder you always fear the worst.

SantanaLopez · 12/09/2014 22:34

The NHS is being privatised here already! The SNP have given Weight Watchers a big Glasgow-NHS contract. In 2011-12, they spent £68.7 million on private contracts. This rose to £83.4 million the next year! If the SNP were so opposed this- why have they let it happen?

Scotland does have a lot of potential, but we need investment to make the most of that potential. The risks and uncertainty that you mention will hamper this greatly.

It's not just slightly higher taxes you're looking at. Have you read the Credit Suisse report? They believe that Scotland would fall into a deep recession. We believe deposit flight is both highly likely and highly problematic (with banks assets of 12x GDP) and should the BoE move to guarantee Scottish deposits, we expect it to extract a high fiscal and regulatory price (probably insisting on a primary budget surplus). The re-domiciling of the financial sector and UK public service jobs, as well as a legal dispute over North Sea oil, would further accelerate any downturn. In our opinion, as North Sea oil production slows, we estimate that the non-oil economy would need a 10% to 20% devaluation to restore competitiveness. This would require a 5% to 10% fall in wages, driven by a steep rise in unemployment.

This isn't risking a lot. This is risking the wellbeing of a generation of young people, as well as the people already at-risk through our society.

EarthWindFire · 12/09/2014 22:34

Why would you be working with the UK on important issues? If you vote for independence then that is what you get. You can't pick and choose.

SantanaLopez · 12/09/2014 22:34

Do you have anything constructive to add tonight, deee?

StatisticallyChallenged · 12/09/2014 22:35

Hope for the best, plan for the worst. That's just sensible.

squoosh · 12/09/2014 22:36

I think that's pretty naive.

I live in Glasgow and have witnessed the aftermath of many an Old Firm football match. Combine an upset electorate with all night drinking and it's hardly beyond the realms of possibility that there would be some serious violent incidences.

WildThong · 12/09/2014 22:36

Do you just get let out at weekends deee

EarthWindFire · 12/09/2014 22:37

Hello worriers! I see you've stopped worrying about money and are now worrying about people coming together to celebrate and commiserate something hugely important! You have such little faith in your fellow humans it's no wonder you always fear the worst.

Why are you being so goady?

I don't think it's a good idea for any pub to be open all night full stop. It has got sod all to do with 'faith in felle humans' talk about being over dramatic Hmm

squoosh · 12/09/2014 22:37

It would post Old Firm match to the power of 100.

Roonerspism · 12/09/2014 22:38

deedee in the last week I have heard of elderly ladies being called "cutns" (misspelt deliberately) for delivering "no" leaflets, English people being told to "fuck off" and on this thread a 10 year old child the same. A friend's car was vandalised yesterday for having a no sticker. In broad daylight.

If the yes vote goes through, I shall quietly remove myself (and prepare to sell up).

Rampant nationalism brings out the very worst in a small sector of society. It is, rightly, to be feared. It is ugly.

EarthWindFire · 12/09/2014 22:38

*fellow

StatisticallyChallenged · 12/09/2014 22:38

Exactly squoosh, it's hardly doomsday scenario thinking to imagine that pockets of violence are possible.

ThePlatypusAlwaysTriumphs · 12/09/2014 22:41

when I say working with the rest of the UK, I mean with regards to threats to security / terrorism. We corroborate with other countries just now without them controlling our finances, do we not? can we not still be friends?

moggiek · 12/09/2014 22:44

Have faith, Platypus. We can do this.

EarthWindFire · 12/09/2014 22:46

can we not still be friends?

I hope so but I do think it will depend on how if it is a yes vote how negotiations are handled.

AS will need to realise that just because he/Scotland wants something it doesn't mean it will be granted if it isn't in the interest of the rest of the remainder of the UK.

SantanaLopez · 12/09/2014 22:46

can we not still be friends?

You just said that you don't like the way the UK is going...

WildThong · 12/09/2014 22:47

platypus No voters don't want UKIP or privatisation of the NHS either, I can assure you.

ThePlatypusAlwaysTriumphs · 12/09/2014 22:48

I really really hope so, moggiek, I just can't dare to hope right now, cos I will be so dumped on 19th September otherwise!

WildThong · 12/09/2014 22:48

squoosh I've been to a hundred old firm games, this is worse.

squoosh · 12/09/2014 22:50

I agree, it will be like 100 Old Firm games have been played at once. Emotions will be running HIGH.
