A question for no voters. My family mostly yes and I feel like I will need some support if yes win! Anyone up for a closed fb group? Don't mean to be divisive but would like a group that is not for debate.pm me if so.

grovel · 12/09/2014 14:59

There is an angry cynicism about everything politicians say. Ironically this makes it easier politicians to be economical with the truth. If Salmond (or Darling) tells a monumental lie there is no-one with the authority definitively to blast it out of the water.

grovel · 12/09/2014 15:03

And, nearly as seriously, no-one trusts the bankers any more. I am pretty confident that 30 years ago pronouncements about the economy from the Chairmen of Scottish banks would have been listened to. People just shrug off anything senior bankers say nowadays.

Just who can we trust?

Spiritedwolf · 12/09/2014 15:06

There is a difference between the official polls, which are adjusted to reflect the population and street canvasses. Not least that people don't always tell the truth to people in person (e.g. some MNetters on this thread talked about keeping their vote private from even their friends, family and neighbours, and expressed their disgust at the news that a Yes campaigner told the yes voting neighbour of someone who was voting no what her voting intention was and encouraged him to try and change her mind... ) - there is the talk of 'shy nos' for instance either saying they don't know, won't say or even that they are voting yes. Street canvases aren't adjusted to reflect the population, so you might have some areas more likely to vote yes and some more likely to vote no.

For what it's worth, No campaigners are hearing more people that are voting no too.

WhatWouldFreddieDo · 12/09/2014 15:09

have only just had a chance to read Carol Craig, Spirited - she has got it, I think.

Problem is, the No campaign only have 5/6 days to get this message across Sad

Spiritedwolf · 12/09/2014 15:12

Yes Freddie she expressed a lot of what I feel about this whole referendum. Sad

grovel · 12/09/2014 15:13

The bookmakers are much more confident about a NO than the polls. I wonder what they think they know?

squoosh · 12/09/2014 15:18

Paddy Power (had no idea there an actual person called Paddy Power!) was on Scotland Tonight last night giving the bookies view of the referendum.

IrnBruTheNoo · 12/09/2014 15:24

"I agree, probably nearer 60%."

I'm trying to catch up a bit by actually opening and reading/watching the links. Something I must admit I don't usually do.

Am I mistaken or did Nicola Sturgeon flatly deny handing back tax powers to Westminster (alleged by Ruth Davidson) in the live debate last night with the young people from schools?

Patrick Harvey confirming that is actually true 2010

IrnBruTheNoo · 12/09/2014 15:26

"Just who can we trust?"

I feel like we're living in 1984, tbh. It's getting more and more like it every day.

WhatWouldFreddieDo · 12/09/2014 15:30

Ha! Yes, cf Carol Craig above

oddcommentator · 12/09/2014 15:39

Team - you assert about the negotiation team - are either a)party to hidden information that is unrealesed b)speaking on a hopeful basis c)actually working for the yes campaign.

oddcommentator · 12/09/2014 15:49

Wild - fascinating. It is easier to blame "them, from there" when he has the very tools he declares are needed to make Scotland a better place.

You can only assume a number of scenarios
a) gross negligence of a level that should encourage old ladies to spit at him in the street
b) malfeasance, conspiracy to deliberately blame other people for his own party's incompetence and thus bolster its support
c) (a) thence leading rapidly to (b) to save face

either way - this is the chap going to be running our economy? Perhaps we ought to try him on a whelk stall or perhaps a paper round first

oddcommentator · 12/09/2014 15:51

Nicola Sturgeon again telling deliberate lies to hoodwink voters.

So Niolca you are a liar. if you read this -I am calling you a bare face liar who pants are most probably on fire. You have intentionally misled the public and i challenge you to refute it

Teamscotland - do feel free to show this to her...

IrnBruTheNoo · 12/09/2014 15:54

What is Nicola Sturgeon lying about exactly odd?

LovleyRitaMeterMaid · 12/09/2014 15:55

44 yes to 3 no (posters) in 4 miles today. I'm telling ya, it's in the bag!

EarthWindFire · 12/09/2014 15:57

44 yes to 3 no (posters) in 4 miles today. I'm telling ya, it's in the bag!

Right ok.....

WildThong · 12/09/2014 15:58

Maybe they're just scared to tell you the truth lovely Wink

WhatWouldFreddieDo · 12/09/2014 15:59

Sheesh, Lovley - In the bag just by the number of posters that Yes voters have allowed to stay up?

Round here it's 10 Yes banners/posters (in perfect nick) and 10 No - every single one of which has been kicked in.

IrnBruTheNoo · 12/09/2014 15:59

I don't think polls are anything to go by. I'll wait til the results are out, will be watching all night probably on 18th.

oddcommentator · 12/09/2014 16:01

picking up on her denying that the powers had been handed back. The powers were returned. Though i suspect there is a form of weasel words around not willing to pay for the computer adminstrator or some such terminological inexactitude.

My point is this - Scotland has the power should it wish to vary income tax - it would appear that this has been declined and the "power handed back". per the Wildthong comment above.

Just raising the tension a little. :-)

squoosh · 12/09/2014 16:01

There are definitely more Yes posters around but in the last week there's been a flurry of No Thanks posters going up in the West End.

But you know what there is most of? Blank windows, blank lapels. Most people don't feel the need to advertise their vote.

TeamScotland · 12/09/2014 16:01

odd don't be so paranoid Grin

The negotiation team have been mentioned several times, live on air, do you watch the debates?

TroelsNextCampaignManager · 12/09/2014 16:02

Following the debate with interest but don't have a vote so will be told to shove off by some, no doubt!

Does anyone know why Labour did not participate in the debate with 16-17 yr olds? Was it to avoid sharing the platform with Galloway?
