The results of the ICM poll which was carried out this week has just been released, too close to call apparently.

42% No
40% Yes*
17% Undecided

Excluding DKs that is:
Yes 49%
No 51%

AnnieHoo · 12/09/2014 13:23

How many years are we outside the EU while we apply for membership?

PhaedraIsMyName · 12/09/2014 13:24

You couldn't get two who are more polar opposite if you tried

And your point being? All that shows is that yes is so daft it can unite even George Galloway and Ruth Davidson.

And criticising Michelle Mone for voting no because she loves her country is also beyond daft. She like me is voting no because we think it is best for our country. It's a bit tedious hearing the "you must hate Scotland" complaints if you are voting no.

oddcommentator · 12/09/2014 13:25

at least 5 years out of the EU

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 12/09/2014 13:26

except that the EU opinion is that Scotland will have to start again.

I'm sure I can find quotes from "experts" stating the opposite. No-one knows because WM wont ask the question.

Further, what have Scotland got that the EU needs so much to make a special case?

Systems that are already fully compliant with EU law.
5 million+ EU citizens
Fishing
Oil
Renewables...

StatisticallyChallenged · 12/09/2014 13:26

I'd say immediate entry is looking very unlikely especially with the Catalonia region as it is. 18 months to negotiate eu entry and get all member states to agree and put in all required changes to meet eu regs some of which we only comply with because of overarching UK laws or institutions... It seems rather unlikely.

Sallyingforth · 12/09/2014 13:27

Unless, as is quite likely, Scotland negotiates its continuing membership of the EU between the Yes vote, and independence day

Haven't you been reading the news?
According to the latest statements from EU officials, it isn't legally possible to jump all the entry hurdles, even if you could get 100% backing from every existing member.
There is no fast track.

EarthWindFire · 12/09/2014 13:29

You can't blame everything on WM as much as you would like to. It is up to the EU and you will need to go through the process like everyone else.

Sallyingforth · 12/09/2014 13:29

Itsall
I didn't see a stable currency and central bank on that list.

IrnBruTheNoo · 12/09/2014 13:30

Watched RT news this morning, fantastic report on Catalan region and their hopes of independence. They are watching with great interest.

I realise Scotland wants a geographical share of some type, but what happens if the majority decide they should get a share (roughly 8% I think) based on population instead??

I looked this up a while ago. Basically, if there is a dispute over maritime boundaries it gets referred to UN law, and UN law says that the standard way to decide maritime boundaries is an equidistant line running out to sea between the two coasts. If you really want me to, I can go and dig up the relevant links again. It is pretty unlikely, especially as there is already an agreed on maritime boundary set up on devolution. Its just as likely they would insist on re-drawing the border for the same reasons (very roughly Scotland 1/3 land area but only 1/10 population)

IrnBruTheNoo · 12/09/2014 13:33

Sorry WildThong will this link do?

You can find many 'expert' quotes, but the only ones that matter are the ones that are in the EU charters.
There is no fast track. No fast track. None.

And one to lighten the mood on the thread:

Sorry - can't keep up with these threads, but can anyone tell me why they are claiming here that the mumsnet poll was released after the ad/as mn debate? Has there been another poll that I am not aware of?

Thanks.

Hmm - interesting, and thanks for explaining that. I guess we've just got to hope that it really DOES turn out to be straightforward; knowing what lawyers can be, I'd still be surprised if a right royal row didn't follow Hmm

AnnieHoo · 12/09/2014 13:38

There are separatists all over Europe watching us.

Sallyingforth · 12/09/2014 13:38

Personally I'm quite relaxed about Scotland taking the tax hit on 90% of the decommissioning cost. 40 billion wasn't it?

TeamScotland · 12/09/2014 13:38

I like this guy's blog today

oddcommentator · 12/09/2014 13:40

ah so hounding an elected member of parliament like this is funny?

Smashing windows - hilarious.

Screaming in the faces of those you disagree with - side splitting

You are normalising the harassing of those you disagree with. Is this something to be proud of Irn?

BardarbungaBardarbing · 12/09/2014 13:40

No cedric the results were of the poll taht had already taken place.

Like so many news stories, if you know the facts you spot the mistakes (or spin).

PhaedraIsMyName · 12/09/2014 13:41

I don't read the Guardian so can't comment personally, other posters on these threads have said that it leans to a Yes

Very much so. I am a Guardian reader but at present can't bear it. Its Scottish coverage has always been poor and inaccurate. Recently it's been swamped by articles by columnists like Deborah Orr telling us how wonderful an independent Scotland will be and giving the distinct impression they know absolutely nothing about Scotland.

oddcommentator · 12/09/2014 13:41

IS that because it agrees with you and fails to address the issues?

ffallada · 12/09/2014 13:41

The thing that gives Weatherspoons credibility is that they don't appear to be in Camerons pocket.
Of some of the companies who signed the letter to say they would put prices up
M&S - not currently known for their business acumen having repeatedly posted trading loses.

ASDA - owned by Wallmart. Wallmart have banned their staff from joining a Union. Today Wallmart announced that they would make their staff buy their uniforms making them $78 (and ignoring the fact they pay minimum wage to the majority of their workers).

John Lewis. Bizarrely a Tory company!

The fact is that team Westminster has a lot of clout with businesses at the moment and can make underhand deals under the table (what I hear you cry, WM politicians being underhand?)

Team WM is not to be trusted.

Sallyingforth · 12/09/2014 13:41

And their governments all have EU Council votes.
