To be Worried About How Bad The Atmosphere In The Uk Will Be In The Event Of A No Vote?

The tension between the yes and no parties is awful. Campaigners from both sides are behaving in a very aggressive manner and I've even heard the odd report of people getting into physical altercations If the result of the referendum is no I fear Scotland is going to descend into chaos, things aren't just going to settle back down. How can we ever come back from this? I honestly fear there is going to be violence.

Realistically you will have a sizeable minority... probably... in scotland who no longer want to be part of the uk. Its hardly an unexpected consequence given the history of england , scotland and wales.

Politically a way will have to be found to deal with this... may lead to more devolution, may lead to further referendum etc.

I think whatever happens its good that referendum is being held and opinions being aired. Its possibly been a shock to some to see that many scots are in favour of independence, nationalism, right to run their own country etc. Better to discuss, however passionately than to ignore.

Please refrain to referring to yes voters (or anyone) as morons. It's deeply offensive and outdated term.

Some of us reached a decision based on research and independent thought. To refer to anyone as a moron based on how they choose to vote is narrow minded and offensive.

Would progressive, idealistic democrats hoodwinked by a Nationalist Party cover it?

mummymeister · 12/09/2014 13:39

I was in Canada on holiday recently they still talk about the fallout from the vote in quebec. we will be just the same whatever way it goes.

BardarbungaBardarbing · 12/09/2014 13:45

Canada: I remember meeting a pair of charming and mild-mannered Albertans who took a bit of a turn at the mention of the Quebecois!

Legionofboom · 12/09/2014 13:53

The Union splitting affects all of us. By the Scots only getting the vote, they are controlling other countries, i.e. the people in Wales, Northern Ireland and England

So if Britain (whatever that might consist of by then) holds a referendum to decide whether or not to stay in the EU, should everyone in all member states have a vote on that?

DontDrinkAndFacebook · 12/09/2014 14:01

Really? Who knew? Confused

I wished I'd known this earlier. Going back over years worth of MN threads to report all the personal attacks and offensive insults aimed at Tory voters and get them deleted will take me weeks.Grin

SirChenjin · 12/09/2014 14:15

How do you research something that provides so few actual details? It's impossible.

Question for Yes voters - if say - you were given independence but only if you took out a loan for £50000 which you then gave straight to the state, would you still vote Yes?

MrsAmaretto · 12/09/2014 15:32

Goodness, I live in shetland and there's none of this vitriol up here, I have "yes" & "no" friends on the mainland & in my family & it's certainly not going to interfere in our relationships.

maninawomansworld · 12/09/2014 15:43

It'll be worth it to wipe the smug look of that twat salmond's face though!

Pragmatically, they should just go and we can stop subsidising them. Let's see how long they can afford to keep up the free prescriptions, free uni places etc. when they don't have English money coming in.

mummymeister · 12/09/2014 15:51

maninawomansworld - they will be able to keep the subsidies going for ever because when the scots vote yes, despite what the govt has said about no to the pound and moving the ships etc. they wont. they are a bunch of surrender monkeys who will just keep pumping money into Scotland the independent for ever. and before anyone says how, I am thinking along the lines of the parachute payments given in football. only this will go on and on. go Scotland, vote yes. send your ships to Plymouth who will be grateful of the work, hand in your pounds and passports and be treated like rUk treats other non eu countries. I don't want Scotland to go but have no say in it so if you are going to go get on with it. George Galloway last night said if the scots go but keep the pound then they are just a colony not an independent country. normally don't agree with him but on this I do.

fledtoscotland · 12/09/2014 15:51

It's splitting communities here in the west of Scotland. Neighbours have got saltires out on display. I've been asked when I'm going home - I've been here 15yrs so this is was my home. AS has caused a huge divide that won't heal easily

OneNight · 12/09/2014 16:02

It's splitting families let alone communities. My own family will never recover until the people concerned are dead and gone or possibly even longer.

BardarbungaBardarbing · 12/09/2014 16:14

StainlessSteel, I bet you are normally mild-mannered too!

I will never look at my SNP neighbours / councilors /MSPs the same way again. I've voted for them before now, more fool me! It's focused me now on fighting political nationalism full stop.

skinoncustard · 12/09/2014 16:17

We too plan on moving south, either way I feel Scotland is f**d and I don't use that language lightly. The country will suffer from uncertainty and division for years to come. We have just started to claw our way out of the recession and this vote will send us into freefall.

The vote is going to be so close that whoever looses they are not going to settle down quietly and toe the line !

Those who think it won't split families and friendships- it will . They still hold grudges from the miners strike! Won't wear anything in a colour remotely like the opposing football team, Sing or have a song played that is in any way connected to their team . This is not done in fun it's deadly serious.

The last few posts have used disabilist insults against Yes voters, incorrectly claimed England subsidises Scotland (if that's the case, why fight to keep us?), and cried racism while proudly spouting it against others.

Can you really not understand why people vote Yes, when such vile terms are levelled at them by supposed 'countrymen' who see them as equals?

If people can cope with some of the disgusting insults thrown about on this thread and not retaliate, I don't think there is much risk of violence in the event that the vote doesn't go the way they want.

SirChenjin · 12/09/2014 17:26

Coffee - I hope you don't mean to infer the Yes voters have the moral high ground?

BardarbungaBardarbing · 12/09/2014 17:27

Have I driven you to suddenly contemplate Scottish Independence Coffee?

Roseformeplease · 12/09/2014 18:40

Bloody hell! Even my apology was deleted. Fuck this.

Coffeethrowtrampbitch · 12/09/2014 19:00

I think they have the moral high ground on this thread, Chenjin, there were three posts in a row slagging off Scottish people and Yes voters in the vilest terms, even though there are Scottish people voting No too.

I wouldn't talk about No voters in those terms. I want them to change their minds, and abusing people will only convince them that you are wrong and unreasonable.

The original point of the thread was should we fear unrest given that the vote will be close.

I don't think Yes supporters will be violent, especially given they haven't responded angrily to the insults which have been levelled here.

Barbara I've supported Scottish independence my whole life. I am passionate about it now as I'm disgusted by the levels of poverty and deprivation we are enduring as a result of the terrible decision to bail out the banks made by Westminster. Because of that, people where I live are using food banks and weeping with shame and hunger as they do so.

It isn't an acceptable way for society to be- £155 billion tax cuts for the wealthiest, 900,000 poorest can't afford to eat.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 12/09/2014 19:00

... they are a bunch of surrender monkeys who will just keep pumping money into Scotland the independent for ever

Unfortunately, I believe this is what a lot of "yes" supporters are relying on

I can only hope it doesn't happen ...
