To not understand why people hate David Cameron and the Conservative Party?

SuperWifeANDMum · 11/09/2014 01:16

Just that really.

I am a Conservative voter.

PM Cameron has disappointed me in some ways such as his lax approach to curbing immigration, deporting foreign criminals and addressing the alarming benefit culture but he has implemented a fair few positive changes.

For example:

Reducing our Debt.
Introducing Bedroom Tax.
Cutting corporation tax.
Frozen Council Tax.

Of you vote labour, why?

I am deeply concerned at the thought of another Labour government next election.

OP posts:
dawndonnaagain · 11/09/2014 14:58

Oops, sorry Nancy. Blush

MoanerLiza · 11/09/2014 15:31

Simple for me.

Most MPs are smug, ignorant, patronising, self-interested wankers, but Tory MPs are the smuggest, most ignorant, most patronising, most self-interested wankers. Therefore I vote Labour.

camaleon · 11/09/2014 16:27

It is not only about political parties. The first post shows a huge level of ignorance about society and how structural differences are almost impossible to tackled from the elite governing us (Tories or not). Perhaps the OP would benefit from reading some of the posts in this links and rethink about ther conceptions on topics such 'benefits culture': blogs.lse.ac.uk/politicsandpolicy/category/lindsey-macmillan/

YouTheCat · 11/09/2014 16:28

I vote Labour because I don't want to see our NHS and our schools sold off to Cameron's mates.

I vote Labour because they want to help the most vulnerable in our society instead of sending them to an early grave.

I vote Labour because the Tories want to revoke our human rights. The changes to employment law have been quite appalling for a start.

I vote Labour because most of the Tory MPs deny climate change.

I don't see how you could possibly think the Tories have reduced our debt when, in fact, it has vastly increased since 2010. Corporations should not have their tax reduced. The 'bedroom tax' is an utter farce, as is the huge cost of implementing Universal credit.

WooWooOwl · 11/09/2014 16:35

I'd vote labour if I thought we would end up with a high quality NHS, where treatments were the best available, patients received continuity of care and didn't have to wait months for treatments and appointments and then have to wait hours after their appointment time on the day it finally arrives.

Service from the NHS that my family has received has been no different from what it was before the condems took over, so as it is, the NHS isn't a good enough reason to vote labour IMO.

LuisSuarezTeeth · 11/09/2014 16:38

I was wrong about the spoon, obviously.

OP I suggest you do some reading, get some experience of these things you are talking about. To be honest you just sound smug.

Uptheairymountain · 11/09/2014 16:42

I could never vote Conservative knowing that London is the richest area in the EU but 9 out the 10 most deprived areas in the EU are in the UK (somewhere in Belgium manages to squeeze on the list at no 9).

Although the current coalition has somehow managed to increase both borrowing and the national debt (might be useful to get rid of Gideon and employ a Chancellor who has a basic grasp of economics), the professed need for both benefit cuts and NHS reform is a canard. There is more than enough money to fund the NHS and the welfare bill.

As an aside, if I were in power I'd start a massive social housing building project. I think social housing should be available for everyone.

Animation · 11/09/2014 16:47

I don't think this is a serious OP post is it.

Darkesteyes · 11/09/2014 16:48

Its the gaslighting too. This Gov tells people in social housing to downsize when DC go away to uni .........and then say that under 25s should live back with their parents because they say under 25s shouldnt get HB. But how can they live back with their parents when/if they have downsized.

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 11/09/2014 17:21

Y.Y. Whisk. It is always mum and the kids that suffer and bear the brunt yet the absent parent gets a walk over from the government. A Poor single mum on her own is an easy target you see.

Also O.P you call those on benefits. Another one picking on the poor and needy but do you work yourself or are you one of those stay at home mums and wives. If you are what is the difference between you and single mum that doesn't work. or is it a different set of rules for you because your "woooopie dooooo" Happily married.

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 11/09/2014 17:27

And all that shit. We have to clean up the mess Labour left behind is wearing a but thin now or to be less polite is getting fucking beyond boring. Your best mate David Cameron has had nearly 5 years to sort things out ffs
I have been a member of mumsnet for nearly a year and a half and I have never used language this bad before. I damming my sole.

Momagain1 · 11/09/2014 17:28

People hate David Cameron because, amongst other issues, the 4 things you think are great, they see as harmful, ill conceived plans not meant to benefit common people or even specifically intended to harm them.

Wouldnt take but a moment to google to see the other point of view on each of those 4 items as they have been well covered in the media.

kentishgirl · 11/09/2014 17:30

'Kentishgirl - I have no idea why I have no Labour voting friends. I would hazard a guess at thinking that a Labour government and their policies are not really applicable to us.'

Hi again OP.

Is that really the point of politics? You vote for the party that benefits you most personally rather than one that is right for the country/society as a whole?

It might surprise you that actually there are plenty of working class Tories (even on council estates) and lots of rich Labour supporters. You have to think and decide for yourself - beyond the immediate effect on yourself, surely (whichever way you choose to vote).

GuybrushThreepwoodMP · 11/09/2014 17:32

Climate change.

We have to cut carbon emissions- we are legally obliged to cut then by 80% by the year 2050. We can stop using plastic carrier bags in we want but that won't make any difference. Ed Milliband (who used to be at DECC) realised that brave decisions have to be made within industry on a massive scale.

  1. Subsidies. At the moment the govt subsidises all energy by 20% and if they stopped, we would use less energy.

  2. Economic incentive for efficiency in industry- there is none. Energy efficiency is more expensive and because the Tories' priority is profit for private companies, they will not incentivise this another way; for example through policy and legislation.
Our whole attitude to efficiency needs to change and in order to go that, the law has to change and the planet has to come first.

If the Tories do win next year, we are fucked. The planet is fucked. Tory voters not only don't give a shit about people of a lower class then themselves but they also don't give a shit about the rest of the world and future generations. Individualism. I'm alright Jack. Screw everyone else. Not changed much since Thatcher.

sashh · 11/09/2014 17:40

and addressing the alarming benefit culture

Ah yes, what do you think of the Cammerons claiming benefit for their disabled child?

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 11/09/2014 17:50

Oh and another thing. Look David Clapson's family in the eye and ask them why they hate Cameron. You know who David Clapson is don't you. He is the poor ex soldier who fought for queen and country and his benefits were stopped. He had £3.44 in his bank account. He was diabetic and could not store his medication which resulted in his death. His coroner said he had no food in his stomach. He was found dead with a pile of job applications letters and cvs around him. His poor poor mind must have been in an absolute turmoil. His only crime being poor and jobless. Like I said though criminals still eat don't they.

RubyGoat · 11/09/2014 17:52

Reducing our Debt - and which government presided over the recession the current generation of young parents grew up in?
Introducing Bedroom Tax - this would only be a vaguely helpful policy if it had been implemented as a measure to encourage people to downsize a) where they genuinely didn't need the extra room, and b) had already refused suitable alternative accomodation, and had been offered the means to move if necessary. Instead it is just used as a punitive measure, regardless whether it is appropriate to do so.
Cutting corporation tax - this is just an insult to the unemployed. Ok so it's been cut, but it's still incredibly hard to get a job. They are countless graduates stuck in jobs they are ridiculously overqualified for. Where are the incentives to take on the long term unemployed, those nearing retirement age, people with health concerns.
Frozen Council Tax - Ok, but it was quite high already. However this means that councils are having to cut services. Our bin collections are now half as often - quite rancid in summer. Less recycling facilities are available in town - fine if you've got a car to take things to the tip, but we don't. The road surfaces locally were appalling until recently, we had the Tour De France come through this & the majority of roads in town were resurfaced, they were clearly in poor condition.

I thought all this before. And I agree with everthing that everyone else said. And then a few months ago, I read about the Battle of the Beanfield. Google it, look at the photos, the one of the policeman with a truncheon riding down the unarmed woman is particularly shocking. If you've a strong stomach, watch the video footage. Some of it mysteriously went missing. Your Tory government & the MOD presided over this, they planned it & the police arrived, beat up a group of families, women with babies, pregnant women.

zeezeek · 11/09/2014 18:11

I vote Labour because, even though they are not perfect and I don't agree with some of their policies, doubt that they even have some for some things, and made some mistakes whilst in Government - they are still more compassionate than the Tories.

That compassion means that we would not have people killing themselves when their benefits are taken away; we would not have families having to choose between eating and getting to work; we would not have people dependent on food banks, or children turning up to school hungry; we would not have vulnerable people turned out of their homes.

This government promised "no topdown re-organisation of the NHS" then gave us one which, in the words of David Nicholson was "so big it could be seen from space".

We have had two of the most inept, incompetent and downright corrupt Health secretaries that have cut funding to primary care to below 10% of the NHS budget whilst dumping more and more work on them - then getting their Daily Mail friends to start a media campaign to vilify GPs.

This has also happened with the public sector, teachers, civil servants.

I could go on, but to be honest, OP, I'm not sure whether you think that any of this actually applies to you.

I too own more than one house, in fact, we have a holiday home in another country. I was born into a privileged, minor aristocratic family and was privately educated, then went to Oxford. I am probably similar to many people in your circle of friends. Yet I vote Labour and the reasons above are just some of the reasons why. I suspect that the main reason between us, therefore, is that I do not have blinkered, narrow views and can see beyond inflammatory headlines.

However, it must be remembered, we are a democracy and we live in a free society where people can, and should, be allowed to hold and express their own beliefs - and where others can disagree with them.

I happen to agree with everyone who have made abusive comments about the Tories and I have made them myself. However, I do feel that they have contributed to the OP's continuing smugness and that maybe some of us are just confirming what she obviously already thinks about Labour supporters.

SweetPeaPods · 11/09/2014 18:17

I think the Conservative party have had a bad time tbh. A lot of the changes they have had to make is because of the mess the previous labour government left us in. They made it clear when DC became PM that they were going to have to make big cuts etc so everyone should have been forewarned.

MaidOfStars · 11/09/2014 18:21

They made it clear when DC became PM that they were going to have to make big cuts etc so everyone should have been forewarned

And what do you suppose those who can't afford such cuts and didn't vote for the current government should do?

dawndonnaagain · 11/09/2014 18:32

Sweet No, the bankers caused the deficit, not the previous government.
As for the cuts, they are all to those less well off than the majority in government. It has been proven time and again that the lowest earners have had the biggest cuts. Add to that the cut to the welfare bill, the fact that food bank usage has increased from tens of people per week, to thousands of people per week, cuts to health services, disability services, mental health services and what you end up with is a two tier nation. The rich are fine, the rest of us are fucked. That's what Tory governments do.

foxdongle · 11/09/2014 18:33

I never have/will vote Tory EVER

Darkesteyes · 11/09/2014 18:38

Whisk Ilive. Mysogyny is at the heart of these policies too.

wanttosinglikemarycoughlan · 11/09/2014 18:55

The rich do very well off the welfare state
They get the best from the education system because they have the money for tutors or to buy homes in the right places

I blame MT for erroding any sense of community. She said we are a nation of individuals but that is not true. Almost everything we do has an impact on other people
You see individualism all the time on here, from those arguing that a 20 minute shower twice a day, and sod the environment, is their choice
And others chomping at the bit because the scummy kid got a sticker for sitting still while their little darling got nothing for reading Shakespeare at age 3. No matter that the other kid may live in extreme poverty in a terrible place
Its so thoughtless and competitive

creighton · 11/09/2014 18:58

the tories were always going to dismantle the health service, with or without the financial crisis.

I dislike dc because he feels that he was born to rule. that's all, no special qualifications or experience, no interest in the country or the people. it is all about him and his birthright. boris Johnson is the same.
