To not understand why people hate David Cameron and the Conservative Party?

SuperWifeANDMum · 11/09/2014 01:16

Just that really.

I am a Conservative voter.

PM Cameron has disappointed me in some ways such as his lax approach to curbing immigration, deporting foreign criminals and addressing the alarming benefit culture but he has implemented a fair few positive changes.

For example:

Reducing our Debt.
Introducing Bedroom Tax.
Cutting corporation tax.
Frozen Council Tax.

Of you vote labour, why?

I am deeply concerned at the thought of another Labour government next election.

I'm really interested to know about your background OP. What's your experience of the bedroom tax, claiming benefits and looking for work?

Chippednailvarnish · 11/09/2014 08:36

Samantha Cameron is the elder daughter of Sir Reginald Sheffield, 8th Baronet[3] (a landowner descended from King Charles II of England) and Annabel Lucy Veronica Jones. She is a distant cousin of Diana, Princess of Wales

From wikipedia - didn't know that!

effinandjeffin · 11/09/2014 08:39

I may be wrong but I thought the bedroom tax was a Labour idea originally that the Tories ran with when they got into power. It's been done to death but I can't understand this horror at the idea that some kids may gasp have to share bedroom.

Anyway, this government is probably the most liberal Conservative government we've ever had (yes, I know it's a coalition, but come on) and everyone acts like they're the gestapo.Personally, I think they're all a shower of shite, Labour included.

Dumbledoresgirl · 11/09/2014 08:39

Interesting that a thread asking why people vote Labour is seen as goading.

Would a thread asking why people vote for any other mainstream party be regarded in the same light? Or would it simply provoke some political debate?

Right of centre supporters are considered the spawn on the devil here on MN and in much of the media. Yet, in my lifetime alone (50 years) the Conservatives have been in power for 26 years, including the current coalition, and Labour for 24 years, which would suggest a fairly even split of public opinion both ways.

I can't answer your question OP as I am on your side of the fence.

kayty · 11/09/2014 09:02

At this rate Ca'moron will go down in history purely as the PM who managed to lose Scotland. You'll be happy though OP, the next coalition will be Tory- Ukip; without Scotland there will never be another labour govt. But immigration, criminals and the oh so alarming benefit culture you refer to will be the least of your worries as we disengage from Europe and watch the pound become an irrelevancy in the world economy. Unlike Greece, we will not recover in our children's lifetimes, let alone our own. No one will want to come here anyway. Do you really believe what you have written in your OP? I am embarrassed for you.

I very much hope Scotland vote no for many reasons but if it's goodbye to Scotland though it will be goodbye to Ca'moron too...

No, sorry, however damaging he and his government have been I can not hope for a yes vote just to get rid of him

diaimchlo · 11/09/2014 09:12

Hell would freeze over before I even thought of voting for the Conservatives, IMHO they are a group of hypocrites.

David Cameron is by far the worst PM I have experienced in my life, he and his Government have managed to split this country in to what he calls 'Scroungers' and 'Strivers', taking it back to Draconian times.

Google Foodbanks and see how many have had to open up during their Government and why.

Look at Callums list and see how many people have died within weeks of being found 'Fit for Work'. Before you say Labour brought in ATOS and the WCA, yes they did but the ConDems changed all the criteria to make it almost impossible to be found 'Unfit to work'.

The same with PIP/DLA, if you can mobilize for 20 metres without having to stop, then you don't need any help with mobility. David Cameron and his wife claimed DLA for their son when they could easily afford the highest quality of care and aids out of their pocket change.

Bedroom Tax is the most stupidly thought out policy, as mentioned further up thread there are very little small properties available. This is due to the massive sell off during Thatchers time. Where did all the money go?????? Certainly not into building new housing stock.

Workfare gives massive companies free labour with very little prospect of future employment at the end of it. So in effect promoting slavery.

Selling of Royal Mail at a reduced price, Privatizing the NHS, who benefits from this???? They and their donors do. We don't it will get to the stage when you turn up in A&E suffering a heart attack and being left on a trolley because you don't have health insurance.

Universal credit... IDS's idiotic idea has already written off approx £130 million of the public's money due to mismanagement.

OP I think you are either very brave or extremely ill informed to admit you like Cameron and his cronies.

Nymeria01 · 11/09/2014 09:17

lax approach to curbing immigration... addressing the alarming benefit culture this is whey his party is so hated and unelectable.

GuybrushThreepwoodMP · 11/09/2014 09:20

YABU.
IRS because right wing values consistently support economic inequality, a weak state and an individualistic attitude which never looks at the bigger picture or the situation of others. The Tories constantly back increased privatisation which weakens public services and make the rich richer and the poor poorer.
Obviously you do as well.

SpeedofSound0 · 11/09/2014 09:25

ODFOD

Hmm Go away you bore. You sound like a DM reporter, or a Tory councillor.

LurkingHusband · 11/09/2014 09:39

Some beautifully eloquent posts here, particularly highlighting the barbaric regime of assessment for ESA and the disabled being mistreated.

Except it was Labour that introduced ESA.

They are all as bad as one another, and I'm with another poster who said they not voting for any of the big 3.

Simile · 11/09/2014 09:39

The Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) deal. If this goes ahead then for the UK this means that US companies can sue our government if for example they increase minimum wage and less regulations on our wages mean companies could decide to reduce employees wages, and the UK will be forced to accept other countries rules eg less food regulations, reversing the ban on asbestos.

It's absolutely disgusting that something that will effect our lives considerably is being negotiated in secret and without our consent.

NeoFaust · 11/09/2014 09:45

There is this presumption from some Tories that everyone is out for themselves so they cannot comprehend why people would want others to receive benefits or support, despite not needing it themselves. They assume the same self interest is in everyone so if people claim benefits they do it because they can and to amass money not because they need to in order to survive.

This, so very much this.

The Tory ideology is that somehow selfishness is a virtue and compassion is a myth. They want to brutalise everyone in society down to their own sociopathic level through deprivation, desperation and despair to justify their own rapacious greed.

For two years my best friend was out of a job and sleeping on my floor. In that time even he'll admit he wasn't properly exerting himself to find work. He was sleeping till 4pm, getting high, then sitting on my Xbox til 4am and boy, did it piss me off. He was the classic benefits scrounger, right there in front of me and I was still proud and privileged to pay my taxes.

I didn't care that some of my money was forming his weed-and-fried-chicken fund, because some of it was supporting a the child of a single mother. Some of it was battle armour for a soldier. Most of it was straight down the line, sermon on the mount christian morality - feeding the hungry, clothing the poor, treating the sick, rehabilitating the prisoner (even as an atheist, these are inarguably good things). The welfare state means that all I have to do is work my hours, pay my taxes and the national wellbeing and moral virtue of my nation is measurably improved.

And for some reason Tories oppose this. Opposition to good is what most call evil.

Hakluyt · 11/09/2014 10:06

Food banks. 21st Century. Developed world country. Food Banks.

vdbfamily · 11/09/2014 10:13

I know this is moving off thread but it is totally wrong to assume that families in social housing always have less money than everyone else.I have just been looking at some statistics online and 20% of those living in social housing earn more than the average wage in this country. I personally object to the 'house for life' attitude. Social housing should be there for those who can least afford it and if they come into money they should be prepared to hand the house back for someone who needs it. Why should a multi-million pound lottery winner remain in a council house whilst another family is homeless. Why was Bob Crow on £145,00 and living in a Council House. If everyone has such entitlement to stay in their house whatever ,then how on earth is any government meant to afford the cost of building more and more houses. The friends I know in Social Housing drive better cars than us and have more expensive holidays because they generally have more disposable income. I realise there are lots of families in dire need but there those who make a choice to rent not buy.
I think a solution for the bedroom tax would be to only levy the charge if there IS a suitable alternative that the tenant is refusing to consider. People with disabilities are entitled to housing that meets their needs so unless a suitable alternative can be offered, again they should be exempt.
I am so glad I am not a politician.

SpaceInvaders · 11/09/2014 10:17

You know what I find the most offensive? The fact that somebody has gone crying to the mods on the first page with " I've reported this thread." FFS, people are allowed a differing opinion!!! Jesus Christ.

SpaceInvaders · 11/09/2014 10:22

Bedroom tax - my neighbour has to pay it on her 3 bedroom house, where she lives with her 2 teenage daughters. Because DC says the 2 girls shouldn't have a bedroom each, they should cram into the same one.

Sorry - but really failing to muster up some sympathy there. They have to share. So what? Millions of people up and down the country with their own houses have to. Could understand if it was a teenage boy and girl, but you've said they are too girls sharing a room.
What the hell's wrong with that?! Confused

SpaceInvaders · 11/09/2014 10:22

two girls, not too! Gah!

KnittedJimmyChoos · 11/09/2014 10:23

They hate them for the same reason people hate Labour and Tony Blair.

Also the tories do have a rep for being nasty, that mantle is now firmly round the shoulders of the Labour party after they sold out their loyal working class and poor voting base.

diaimchlo · 11/09/2014 10:31

As mentioned in my previous post yes Labour did introduce the WCA no-one disputes that..... But IDS has changed the discriptors so many times that it makes it virtually impossible to be found unfit for work.

SpaceInvaders · 11/09/2014 10:34

This.

firstchoice · 11/09/2014 10:34

I cannot understand how a man who had a child with a disability himself could push through policies that are so HUGELY punitive for disabled people in this country.

Yet alone: Food Banks - in a rich first world country.
Bedroom taxes, benefit changes, the destruction of the nhs, the destruction of the education system, Uni fees etc etc etc.

All the while letting huge multinationals off taxes and letting the City destroy our national finances.

And he sits on his 'throne' at the Guildhall and tells us why it is our fault.

Angry Angry Angry

SlightlyJadedJack · 11/09/2014 10:41

I won't be voting Tory for many of the reasons posted above but particularly hate them at the moment for their determination to privatise our healthcare and destroy the NHS. I hate them.

dawndonnaagain · 11/09/2014 10:41

Good grief! You keep voting tory you misguided soul. It's a myth that Labour destroys economies, perpetuated by Tories. The banks fucked us. The banks owned by Tories fucked us in this country and the banks owned by rich right wingers in other countries fucked them.
The disabled are dying at an ever greater rate due to the Tories. The benefit scrounger story is also mythical. There are some, but very, very few and that is exactly the reason why you remember them, not because it's reported daily, but because it's rarely reported. I'm bored of this government and its insidious little narrative of striver and skiver, it's a lie designed to keep us all quiet and controlled.

19lottie82 · 11/09/2014 10:44

I am also a Tory voter. To me, all they are trying to do is rebuild our country after the last Labour government left it on it's knees.

People don't like cuts, I appreciate that, but sadly, we only have a limited budget and loads of debt. It's simple maths.

I agree with the bedroom tax in principal (we have a housing crisis with thousands of families needing homes, people shouldn't be allowed to hog homes that are too big for them) but I also think claimants should be offered (and reject) a smaller property, before their housing allowance is cut. There aren't enough 1 beds to go round and it's not fair to penalise people if they have no where else to go.
