ItsAllGoingToBeFine, but who will be Prime Minister? Pretty unsatisfactory changing halfway through. My suggestion was that maybe Cameron, Clegg, Miliband et al agree on a team and step back themselves. It would make the end result a joint enterprise and could prevent years of feuding in rUK.

This is bonkers. I've been an observer from England from Thread One. I want Scotland to thrive whatever you choose but the start-up costs being bandied around by YES are laughable. What you want may be worth it but will cost hundreds and hundreds of millions.

I've tried only to ask questions/query the absurd from either side.

I notice posters on here saying that they will 'buy British' rather than Scottish in the event of Scottish independence. As far as I am aware Scotland will remain on the island of Great Britain, therefore we are still and always will be British. We may not be part of the UK, but short of slicing ourselves off at the border, we can't stop being British.

Go on, buy British - you know it makes sense ;-)

Cambiodenombre · 09/09/2014 22:05

But independence isn't for 18months. These institutions presumably need to be in place by March 2016. Or will scotland just stop paying its share a week Friday?

SantanaLopez · 09/09/2014 22:05

What really annoys me is the downright deceit of the Yes campaign.

Yes, this annoys me too. I read an article where a single mother with 2 kids (she was only about 20) insisted that life would get better for them because she was voting yes. All of the signs suggest very strongly that it won't.

A lot of people have fallen for the rhetoric, and it's praised as 'engagement'. It's wrong.

March 2016 isn't that far away really. We'll have to start paying NOW to set everything up. And where is the money going to come from? As you say, we can't stop paying our UK bills.

chocoluvva · 09/09/2014 22:07

I hope undecided MNetters are reading this thread.

Sallyingforth · 09/09/2014 22:08

Santana The Scottish equivalent of Defra had better get started quickly.
On independence day the farmers will all be asking why their EU subsidies have suddenly stopped.

Cambiodenombre · 09/09/2014 22:10

From that pot of gold at the end of the rainbow....

StatisticallyChallenged · 09/09/2014 22:12

It's an oil well at the end of the rainbow!

Cambiodenombre · 09/09/2014 22:13

Luckily oil wells never run dry then....oh no wait

firstchoice · 09/09/2014 22:13

Its sodding cloud cuckoo land at the end of the Rainbow....

SantanaLopez · 09/09/2014 22:14

Grin at firstchoice

chocoluvva · 09/09/2014 22:16

Don't worry - we are "world leaders" in renewables. We sell them to ...oh no wait

LovleyRitaMeterMaid · 09/09/2014 22:16

I'm not sure what timescales are laid out for the transfer of these agencies, whether it will be phased, shared or what.

.

Sallyingforth · 09/09/2014 22:16

According to the Mumsnet poll, 51% believe the SNP promise that they will have a currency union with the UK.
But those people are not voting for a CU, and they won't get one. They are only voting for Scotland to be an independent country.

Roseformeplease · 09/09/2014 22:17

Sorry to derail with Follicle Bollicles (do a search, might be in classics) but I really love the idea of this thread being monitored by both campaigns who are currently searching to ensure that they have an answer to any questions about them.

Cambiodenombre · 09/09/2014 22:17

Don't worry, Alex salmond probably doesn't either

Sallyingforth · 09/09/2014 22:19

You ought to be sure Rita, if you are asking people to vote for them.

AnnieHoo · 09/09/2014 22:20

The Governor of the Bank of England gave an emphatic NO to Scotland keeping the £ today.

That might be enough for the undecided to start questioning Salmond's blind arrogance.

LovleyRitaMeterMaid · 09/09/2014 22:20

My understanding is there will be a period of negotiation and transfer. Beyond that I don't know the details and I wouldn't pretend that I do.

HippityHoppityLaLaLa · 09/09/2014 22:21

Lovely: 'I'm not sure what timescales are laid out for the transfer of these agencies, whether it will be phased, shared or what. '.

No, and nobody else knows either, not even St. Alex of Salmond. But then, why let details get in the way of our brave new future?

StatisticallyChallenged · 09/09/2014 22:22

Hmmm rose...

Alistair, do you dye your eyebrows?

Sallyingforth · 09/09/2014 22:25

Rita
Negotiation needs two sides, and transfer needs someone willing to do the transfer. Do you really think that Westminster is going to give you anything/everything you want?

LovleyRitaMeterMaid · 09/09/2014 22:27

Why do you assume it's going to be hostile?

Like I've said, Scotland haven't been freeloading lodgers, we've been contributors and therefore assets will be split accordingly.

firstchoice · 09/09/2014 22:28

Oh, Rose hadn't heard the possibility that this thread is being monitored by the "great and good"

Well, gang, if you are reading:

Mr Cameron - you have left it far too late to have a hope of addressing the concerns of many of the Scottish people. If the vote goes Yes I will hold you responsible! Your last minute visit probably isn't going to help the NO vote.

Mr Darling - well, you've tried to speak sense against a tide of Yes voters who do not want to hear, but you have come across as rather wet.

Mr Milliband - you aren't doing any good visiting Scotland. Honestly.

Mr Salmond - Scotland deserves better than an independence campaign so very very short on facts! Your 'place in history' wont be as good as you hope, even if you win.

Ms Sturgeon - .

I hope no one votes Yes solely to get rid of the current encumbents of WM.
Loads and loads and loads of English people loathe and despise them too and want a fairer and more just society.
