To believe that it will be a "no" vote in the majority on the 18th?

My reasoning is that, although there appears (from media reports) to be increased enthusiasm for voting "yes" it is not the whole story (they're just shouting the loudest). The noes are the default; and therefore they don't have to say anything or do anything, just vote on the 18th.

My experience having chatted to neighbours, colleagues, friends is that the vast majority (more than 80%) are going to be voting no.

I'm hoping for a no vote, I care hugely about this country and fear the future if "yes" wins. I am certain that if "no" is the majority then I anticipate there will be big changes coming for Scotland, and devolution will continue slowly and carefully.

I totally sympathise with the notion that Scotland does not want the Tories to rule from Westminster and that only by voting for independence will that never happen again, but surely we have to look at the bigger picture here? There is so much at stake to base the future of Scotland and its inhabitants on this single issue?

I hope they vote no.

Did anyone listen to the Radio 4 feature on the news about the similarity with the Quebec/Canada independence vote? Was very interesting.

OldLadyKnowsSomething · 09/09/2014 20:08

There was a poll recently which showed that, if pressed, undecided voters were inclined to Yes in a ratio of 2:1.

flippinada · 09/09/2014 20:11

I'm genuinely undecided.

If you'd asked me two days ago, I'd have said I was leaning to a yes. However if you asked me today, I'm leaning back towards no.

MyNameIsAlexDrake · 09/09/2014 20:12

I think the last minute crisis visit by Cameron & Clegg might push some more undecided into the Yes camp. WM is so obviously running scared now that the Yes will win. Says it all really.

flippinada · 09/09/2014 20:13

I think the vote is genuinely too close to call. Ultimately, the outcome will be decided by the undecided... if that makes sense.

tilliebob · 09/09/2014 20:18

I bloody hope so too OP. No one I know in my real life is voting yes apart from two rellies up in Aberdeen.

I agree the Yes brigade are disproportionately loud. I have just hidden a stack of them on FB. No idea who thinks constantly harping on makes anyone think "you know what, I'll just totally change my outlook and my vote" because of it.

YakInAMac · 09/09/2014 20:18

I can understand a gut feeling for independence. I just can't understand anyone taking a gamble into the unresolved,, unknown incomplete story that is Alex Salmond's (lack of) vision.

IrnBruTheNoo · 09/09/2014 20:19

Thanks to DC and co visiting, they'll safely push the undecided voters into the Yes camp.

RJnomore · 09/09/2014 20:21

I've spoken to quite a few people today who have mentioned just saying they are voting yes because they can't stand teh hectoring if they say otherwise.

Also quebec was 12 per cent ahead for a yes vote until the day of the poll and it was a (marginal) no.

I think still a no.

tilliebob · 09/09/2014 20:25

Yup, as far as my work is concerned I'm a yes too as I just nod and smile and keep my trap shut. It was the same in my night class until last week when someone "came out" as no and the floodgates opened! Grin

flippinada · 09/09/2014 20:29

I agree tillie. And I speak as someone who is considering a yes vote.

Thoroughly fed up of the thinly veiled propaganda that is constantly being regurgitated.

flippinada · 09/09/2014 20:33

Missed a bit of there. Regurgitated on FB. If anything, it's putting me off.

tilliebob · 09/09/2014 20:36

I also know undecided voters who (like I would be if undecided) have decided to vote No in defiance if the onslaught being paraded in front of them and the many names they've seen people being called. I think when I was told in the local pub to "Fuck off to England" it created many no voters out of the undecided there that night.

DesperatelySeekingSedatives · 09/09/2014 20:37

I really hope for Scotland's sake they vote no. I think it will be a huge mistake for them to leave.

I've noticed an awful lot of aggressive "yes" related statuses on my FB last few months and its reaching fever pitch now. It's incredibly uncomfortable reading tbh. I'm not Scottish although my mum's family are, and reading sneering, anti English comments from people I thought were my friends has annoyed me somewhat. So much utter bollocks being spouted I'm embarrassed for one in particular for being so bloody gullible Grin

I also see an awful lot of "are you sure you know what you're doing voting no?" and the oh so patronising "have you done your research?" aimed at those who say they are voting no. there was one conversation that went on for 2 solid days where 2 people tried to convince a third to change her no vote to a yes Hmm she deactivated for a week in the end and then came back and blocked them both. these people were otherwise pretty good friends, such a shame people fall out with each other over this. That is just one example.

valrhona · 09/09/2014 20:46

Agree with apocalypsethen this debate is fascinating to watch from the Republic of Ireland

From an outside point of view it seems almost impossible to call

HappyCria · 09/09/2014 20:46

To anyone at work I am an undecided voter I once tried to say I was leaning towards yes only to be shouted down and told how stupid I was.
In reality I am a definite yes voter.

I do think the no's will win on the night although not by much. This whole thing is far to close and will leave alot of bitterness and resentment for years to come imo Sad

BardarbungaBardarbing · 09/09/2014 20:50

I made the mistake of talking to an avowed "undecided". I now realise she was just saying she didn't yet have the facts to justify her choice which was clearly yes!

She is now avoiding me and it just confirms by belief that if you want to maintain friendships say nothing!

HappyCria · 09/09/2014 20:52

Someone on dh's Facebook feed has gone on a big long lecturing rant to try and educate everyone on the similarities between hitlers rise to power and the snp's tonight.
Dh finds it funny at his ignorance but I'm feeling quite hurt insulted that someone honestly believes that people that want independence are no different to those that supported the nazi party!!

weebarra · 09/09/2014 20:57

I wouldn't like to bet on which way it will go. Most of the people I've spoken to about it are Nos, about 60:40 I reckon. I'm a yes btw.

BardarbungaBardarbing · 09/09/2014 21:01

Your Dh is right to put it down to one of those things that happen in a passionate situation.

But I am troubled at the core of nationalist belief at the heart of the SNP. That's not to say I think everyone voting yes is doing so for nationalist reasons, many people I know are not. I think Nicola Sturgeon in Easterhouse is an example of Nationalists piggybacking on social concerns that tahy don't seem that bothered by ordinarily.

The most rabid SNPers I know loathe poor people.Sad

JohnCusacksWife · 09/09/2014 21:03

Interestingly have noticed quite a few friends changing their profile picture on FB to No Thanks in the last day or so. Perhaps the recent polls will actually work to the No campaign's advantage by shaking No voters out of their complacency and getting them motivated to get out there and vote No.

AmIthatHot · 09/09/2014 21:08

I hope to god the "no" vote wins. I am getting more and more worried at the number of intelligent people planning to vote yes

PhaedraIsMyName · 09/09/2014 21:08

I feel sick at the thought of a Yes vote. And the more I read here from yes supporters the more I think it will be a terrible mistake if yes wins.

SantanaLopez · 09/09/2014 21:10

I am not relaxing until I see the actual result.

thinkineed2admit · 09/09/2014 21:15

I think it'll be a no, but a fairly tight margin. The undecideds are likely to vote no, and most people I know who have a vote are saying no. The thought of a yes vote makes me very angry and worried. I think salmonds a total bastard for doing this to scotland - the divisions and scars as mentioned upthread Angry
