To think DH's tooth pain is not the same as childbirth?

He chipped a filling about 6 weeks ago and has been in and out to the dentist ever since. Got two crowns put in, then had a wisdom tooth removed (fully descended, not impacted) that apparently had a cyst attached. He is now on antibiotics to manage any possible infection arising. Since that operation he has been obsessing that he has a dry socket and spends ages every morning standing in front of the mirror examining thre back of his mouth while I wrangle DS into his clothes and get him breakfast and out the door.

We had an appointment we both needed to attend this morning and halfway through he springs it on me that he has a dental appointment to go to because his teeth are still hurting. On the way to his car he says to me 'it might be a dry socket. The pain is supposed to be as bad as childbirth' said with a long-suffering look on his face.

FFS Hmm

I have had my share of dental work over the years, impacted wisdom teeth requiring surgery under GA, abscesses etc. IT IS NOTHING LIKE CHILDBIRTH!!!! At all.

I just rolled my eyes, snorted with laughter and told him to get over himself. WIBU? I literally never want to hear another word about his effing teeth ever again.

And I am 7 months pregnant ATM and I never complain about it! If he had to be pregnant, it would be the end of the world I'm sure... childbirth, my foot...

YANBU but on the other hand, pain is objective and immeasurable anyway.

HighwayDragon · 08/09/2014 18:35

Ime tooth pain is worse than childbirth

Oakmaiden · 08/09/2014 18:36

It is supposed to be very very painful.

PumpkinBones · 08/09/2014 18:37

I had a dental abscess and spent a week in the worst pain of my life, was given morphine in hospital at 1am at it's worst. I would have swapped it in a second for childbirth Grin I remember sobbing as much to DH. On the other hand childbirth and toothache are quite similar in the sense that once they are over you can't quite remember how bad it was, and also people like to trade horror stories about both!

LizLimone · 08/09/2014 18:38

Well I guess it depends on the childbirth then! With DS my labor was pretty traumatic and since I'm facing into it again in 2 months time, I'm not really in the mood to hear DH's obsessive hypochondria... Angry

I've had tooth pain that was was worse than childbirth too. Nothing made it better and it was agony - labour was definitely less painful!

areyoubeingserviced · 08/09/2014 18:39

Agree with Highway
I have three children, but toothache was the worst pain I ever had.
I was in so much pain I phoned my dm and cried like a baby

LizLimone · 08/09/2014 18:39

I've had abscesses too and dental surgery - childbirth was definitely the worst. Much worse. And DH is unreasonable to even suggest otherwise since he can't compare whereas I can.

I had a terrible labour and thought that must be the worst pain. Then I had toothache due to WT problems and I honestly would've tackled labour again. The pain was horrible, I couldn't sleep with it.

LizLimone · 08/09/2014 18:40

And I am FED UP listening to him!

Applelicious · 08/09/2014 18:40

2 very different but both very painful. I wouldn't like to pick either.

He does sound like he's milking it a bit but I'd probably be a bit more supportive. It would be like him rolling his eyes at you during childbirth.

ThatBloodyWoman · 08/09/2014 18:40

Toothache is BAD.

No idea about childbirth with the wonder of modern medicine.
Didn't feel a thing.

WarblingOyster · 08/09/2014 18:40

However, don't let your DH know some women agree with him.

CheeseBored · 08/09/2014 18:42

Out of interest, I have a molar that needs to come out, but it's not causing me any pain. I was planning to wait until it gets painful to have it removed - would that be very foolish do you think? i.e do I risk developing an abscess??

fatlazymummy · 08/09/2014 18:42

I agree, toothache can be much much worse than labour pain.
Are you the only one that's allowed to suffer then, OP?

BellsUpMyNose · 08/09/2014 18:42

i think toothache and earache are the worst pain ive ever felt and ive got 3 dcs

Frontier · 08/09/2014 18:44

Well they're different but tooth pain, I would say, can be as bad if not worse then childbirth.

During childbirth you are offered appropriate and effective pain relief, you know it will end soon(ish), the body's doing all the things it's supposed to to help you cope, you know what is causing it and that it's not permanent and there's something pretty amazing to look forward to a the end of it. And you don't have people laughing and telling you to get over yourself.

MyFairyKing · 08/09/2014 18:44

The worst pain ever is actually a stubbed toe. Hurt my baby toe last night and it still throbs. Angry

PrincessTheresaofLiechtenstein · 08/09/2014 18:44

I preferred my births (drug free) to my dental abscess but am sure that's not the same for everyone!

SeattleGraceMercyDeath · 08/09/2014 18:45

Oh god toothache was worse than labour any day of the week, it was relentless, no break, throbbing agony, I made DH drive me to A & E in the middle of the night for analgesia as I had OD'd on every over the counter option I had.

LizLimone · 08/09/2014 18:45

Yes I'm the only person whose pain matters fatlazy. That's what this very serious and heartfelt post is clearly about.

OP posts:
WooWooOwl · 08/09/2014 18:45

I'd rather do labour than have severe toothache. At least you can get full pain relief for childbirth and no one expects you to be able to function normally when you're going through it.

Toothache is horrible.

tigerlily1405 · 08/09/2014 18:46

I too have had toothache that was definitely worse than childbirth.

BalloonSlayer · 08/09/2014 18:47

I guess I'd say "Yes well I know that SOME toothache can be worse than childbirth, but since your over-the-counter painkillers worked for you, and that you slept last night I think I can assure you that YOUR toothache is not worse than childbirth."

Thomyorke · 08/09/2014 18:47

I was black and blue after having wisdom teeth out, they where in awkward places. The worst pain ever, morphine in hospital followed by strong painkillers for a week dc birth where like shelling peas compared to that. But not everyone has the same experience of either as luckily never has a traumatic labour.
