Don't hold your breath sc

weatherall

I went to a Q and A meeting taken by Nicola Sturgeon in July.

She was asked what the gov't of an independent would do to encourage more employment (the questioner mentioned that this had been a problem for her children who are young adults). NS, named two things: provide free childcare which would help women get back into employment: and lower corporation tax to encourage businesses to come to Scotland rather than anywhere else. (Eg rUK.)

My daughter (also a young adult) was sitting beside the person who asked the question. It struck me that NS might have thought she was the daughter of the questioner - so she mentioned something appealing to a young woman. Not that free childcare will create jobs, except for some new low-paid nursery staff.

You can't criticise AD for failing to come up with Scottish-specific job-creating policies when that's the best NS could come up with.

Reneging on our share of the deficit if Scotland is not allowed a currency union post-independence? Any views?

StatisticallyChallenged · 08/09/2014 22:36

And of course it'll only help women get back to work Angry. Nic love, the 21st century called - it wants you to know that now, men can look after children too. Some even do it for a living. Just FYI.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 08/09/2014 22:37

It's directly above ItsAll, hardly a huge difference.

Indeed. Hardly a difference at all. So "The collapse of Iceland's major banks in 2008 dragged the public finances down and caused the worst economic rupture seen in Europe since WWII. The Krona fell 50% against all major currencies, unemployment, hitherto unheard of, soared to 10% and money flew out of the country at an alarming rate" hasn't been too calamitous then?

No one is going to be 'forced out' by a yes vote!

Stop with the Enoch Powell esque 'repatriations'.

If people want to emigrate from Scotland that is their free choice.

Weatherall - I used the phrase 'forced out' and I stand by it. Dh and I do not think we will be able to stay in an independent Scotland, for a number of personal, financial and work reasons. If we have to leave it will absolutely NOT be our free choice - we love it here, and would prefer to stay. If we leave we will genuinely feel we have been forced out - because if things did not change we absolutely would not be leaving, and none of the things that may well force us out will be things we choose. I see no free choice for us.

You can choose not to believe me, but we have already started talking through the issues involved in a move, and researching areas to live.

OOAOML · 08/09/2014 22:38

Are you among the better together campaigning in Edinburgh sc? Genuine question, I follow them on Facebook, (sheer nosiness really) and it always seems to be the leafy, affluent areas they canvass in. Is that deliberate? I wouldn't dare ask on the Facebook face. Don't want to be accused of trolling!

I go out canvassing in Edinburgh, and not in affluent areas. I was in a photo of Sunday canvassers in a definitely not affluent area. Of course, some areas of Edinburgh are pretty affluent Wink

Reneging on our share of the deficit if Scotland is not allowed a currency union post-independence? Any views?

A frankly stupid idea that fails to understand the difference between currency and assets. It's difficult to say but whilst it would mean that Scotland wouldn't have debt it probably wouldn't be viewed well by the markets

On a personal level, I would be utterly ashamed if we did that. I try not to use shame in this debate but I think that would be shameful

littlebillie · 08/09/2014 22:41

If it is a NO for good are we in a NEVERENDUM

StatisticallyChallenged · 08/09/2014 22:42

It's a balance of several measures, and on most of the financial ones it's considerably lower.

ChelsyHandy · 08/09/2014 22:42

Pollster on tv has just said that if only male voters were voting, Yes would win, because they are far more likely to be Yes voters.

chocoluvva · 08/09/2014 22:42

My point about Weight Watchers being given a contract to provide dietary advice to Scottish patients:
Weight watchers, (an American company) will recommend their own (salty, sugary, low-fibre. nutritionally lacking products) to patients; unlike the NHS dieticians who currently provide advice. There's a difference between contracting out cleaning, provision of equipment etc and giving a contract to a commercial weight loss company instead of to neutral, professionally trained health practitioners. Hardly a good example of protecting the Scottish NHS from the conservatives.

StatisticallyChallenged · 08/09/2014 22:46

That's true ChelsyHandy - 54% yes for men, 42% for women.

chocoluvva · 08/09/2014 22:51

Statistically the person who asked the question has sons who would be competing with the women who have children who will be now free to return to work, so it would lessen the questioner's sons' chances of finding work.

Unless they plan to work in a nursery, of course changing direction from their science degrees. Hey ho, I expect the yes voters will counsel them to retrain.

Sorry, cheap joke.

LovleyRitaMeterMaid · 08/09/2014 22:53

As an eternal chubster who has spent to much of my time and money at weightwatchers I can say they don't actually really push their ready meals and cheap at meetings.

I might have just hit lucky with the many different leaders I have hadover the years

Luckytwo · 08/09/2014 22:53

I think I've asked this before on another thread. But where do people who will be leaving after a yes vote actually think they'll be going ?
Presumably only those with other nationalities will be able to 'emigrate'.
Because Scotland won't be part of the uk so folk won't be able to just up and move to Manchester, nor will it be part of Europe so they won't be able to pop over to Spain. I'm struggling to see how this outflow will work.

Companies moving their hqs to london, I imagine they will move some staff, but will probably be able to cope with local people to take any jobs after restructuring

LovleyRitaMeterMaid · 08/09/2014 22:54

*crap not cheap

Anyway, I'm just being facetious.

WildThong · 08/09/2014 22:54

What's that about choco

StatisticallyChallenged · 08/09/2014 22:55

LuckyTwo, we won't be stripped of British citizenship or nationality is my understanding so we'll be able to move easily enough.

ChelsyHandy · 08/09/2014 22:57

You would have to get a Visa Luckytwo to work abroad, like if you went to Australia for example. You would have to renew it as often as the country of employment required.

Those with a blood relation to another country, e.g. a grandfather or similar, might be able to relinquish their Scottish passport and get one from the other country.

machair · 08/09/2014 22:58

Sadly choco, the NHS Scotland aren't great when it comes to dietary advice. My diabetic DM was advised to eat baked potatos (white carb which increases blood sugar levels) and when I was breastfeeding I was told, "you should feel free to eat lots of cream cakes". Not saying that WW are any better.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 08/09/2014 22:59

Reneging on our share of the deficit if Scotland is not allowed a currency union post-independence? Any views?

Well - would the EU welcome with open arms a country that has proved its willingness to renege on debt?

Would anyone be willing to lend Scotland money?

TeamScotland · 08/09/2014 22:59

www.businessforscotland.co.uk/the-hidden-cost-of-the-union-hs2/

According to Wikipedia, The Institute of Economic Affairs have put the total cost at almost double, £80 billion. So therefore presumably Scotland's share would almost double.

Planned completion date is 2032.

BT blokey, Danny Alexander's not keen on it, apparently.

ChelsyHandy · 08/09/2014 22:59

How would that work Statistically? Surely once the independent Scottish state came into being, you would have to choose one nationality or another (if the rest of the UK were generous enough to allow it). Is there anything that says dual nationality will be permitted by the rest of the UK?

prettybird · 08/09/2014 23:00

Statistically - re HS2, is this the sort of thing you were looking for. It's in the FT and relates to Wales, but it refers to a DoT spokesman saying that as HS2 was a project that improved national infrastructure & as such benefitted everyone, it wouldn't be included in the Barnett consequentials.
