Welcome to indyref 6

Spidergirl8 asked close to end of last thread:

What impact would independence have on fiscal policy and economic stability
What impact would the ageing population have on the future
Is the predicted future a positive one, based on fact

If the bite goes no, what has actually been achieved? Does that not just put Scotland on the back foot?

Let's try and give not too biased answers please!

Re companies relocating, a lot depends on what is required to have your HQ somewhere. Various financial regulators (only using that example because I have personal experience) impose a range of restrictions on what is required to sell in a particular jurisdiction, what is required to be domiciled there etc. some are very light touch about it, some incredibly demanding. Some very prone to sudden announcements that need complied with if you want to keep doing business.

It wouldn't be universal for FS. I think the banks splitting and operating as subsidiaries of a group is likely. For insurance and investment companies it would vary according to what they sell, who they sell it to and where they all it. A lot of functions would be likely to go - I don't think I've ever claimed the whole industry would go. I think call centre jobs might be likely to stay - for a lot of companies I think the bulk of jobs would move. There are a fair number of companies that have made property investments that may turn out to be something more.

Itsall Sterlingisation = interest rates and fiscal policy under the control of another country.

So you are saying Panama isnt an independent country?Hmm

Sallyingforth · 06/09/2014 22:22

Thanks for the Mail link. I think that's about as likely as their line at the bottom about Jack the Ripper.
The Irish border couldn't be sealed during the Troubles. There's no way the Scottish border could be sealed either.
The Mail is complete crap - why does anyone bother with it?

Garfield cartoons?

Sallyingforth · 06/09/2014 22:25

Yes it looks pretty definite. What do you think about the Guardian suggestion Cordelia? It looks promising to me.

StatisticallyChallenged · 06/09/2014 22:25

True ladyc, I should have included being an EU member in my currency summary!

Interesting stuff in that Guardian article about the 5 to 6 year wait for getting back in to the EU.

I was just about to ask people's opinions on that. That's a big worry.

There very well could be a border- in EU, in Schengen = border, for example.

deeedeee · 06/09/2014 22:26

Oooh I think I might book a holiday. Not sure I can take another fortnight of this

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 06/09/2014 22:26

Interesting stuff in that Guardian article about the 5 to 6 year wait for getting back in to the EU. So we certainly won't be using the euro for a long time.

That is a matter of opllinion, not fact. Evidence/people supporting both sides.

So is Panama an independent country?

(Panelbase poll possibly due at midnight)

Spidergirl8 · 06/09/2014 22:29

I wish I had a crystal ball. Looks like there will be A LOT of challenges if the vote is yes.

I have a non-Scottish bank account, wonder how all of that would be managed. I suppose there would be a cool off period.
I used to work in a finance up here and can confirm that lots of offices are located up here to save costs so may not be a sudden closure, as long of not in breach of regulations etc.
Also, depending on Independent policy, may create loopholes etc to make Scotland more attractive.....just a thought ;)

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 06/09/2014 22:31

Not sure of the relevance of Panama

It is an independent country (one of many) that uses another countries currency. You said sterlingisation would mean Scotland not independent.

My point is that if Scotland has sterlingisation it has no control over interest rates or fiscal policy

I agree.

WildThong · 06/09/2014 22:32

Saw it in the Lakeland catalogue

AnnieHoo · 06/09/2014 22:32

The Panama plan would see Scotland's interest rated set by a foreign country. Scotland would have no central bank. No financial back-up.

This means cuts in public spending, job cuts and mortgage and loan payments going up.
