I took DDs aged 10 and 6 for new shoes yesterday and it cost me EIGHTY TWO POUNDS.

DD1s were 42 and DD2s were 40! Since when did little kids' shoes cost 40 quid!?

I remember them being much less last year! Something like 28-35 pounds...am I imagining it or have shoes gone up a LOT!?

£40 for a pair of Startrite shoes
£7 for a pair of plimsols

Luckily the teens' shoes still fit, as all of mine have problem feet and need expensive shoes.

sausagefortea · 02/09/2014 11:13

Plus.....just on a rant, clarks quality has gone way done in recent years. They last ok but startrite are much better. Feel like actual decent quality leather. But startrite are probably £10 more expensive than clarks Hmm

If you think about the fact that there's probably no VAT on children's shoes it's pretty extortionate how much shoes cost. Up there with school holiday holiday prices in unfairness.

Keletubbie · 02/09/2014 11:13

£77 in bloody Clarks. For a 6 year old. 1 pair of school shoes, 1 pair of trainers. And 2 20% off vouchers for when I can actually afford shoes for myself.

5madthings · 02/09/2014 11:13

I have yet to do shoe shopping, will do it Wed but ds1's will be about £60

Ds2 will be £50-60

Ds3's will be about £45-50 and so will ds4's.

That's just shoes, they need trainers and the elder two will need football boots ad well.

Dd will also need new shoes...

We get ricosta or geox type shoes ad my boys have awkward fat feet with a high instep.

Last year ds2 lost his! So I bought a cheapest pair from brantano and they didn't even last half a term. So it is worth paying more ime.

We have a two mile walk to school and my kids run around, play football, scooter, bike etc so their shoes take a beating but ricosta and geox or ecco always last til they outgrow them and the shoe shop always fits generously.

ElephantsNeverForgive · 02/09/2014 11:16

Nothing yet, both are wearing last years Grin

It will be a horrible bill for some brogues when DD1 finds some she likes as she's 16 and they won't be kids.

DD2's shoes were new in April. Probably last time she'll except Clarks children's.

ElephantsNeverForgive · 02/09/2014 11:18

Fortunately being older trainers now last until they are worn out, as DD1 avoids out door PE like the plague, that's a nice long time.

Polonium · 02/09/2014 11:24

DD School shoes £47 (Start-Rite), trainers for school £45 (Nike), outside school trainers £45, indoor school shoes £18 (John Lewis), party shoes £41, weekend shoes £55 (Camper), Wellington boots £62.29 (she uses these as riding boots too, if we bought cheaper wellies we would also need to buy her riding/jodhpur boots)

DS similar but with much much cheaper wellies and football boots £26 in place of silver party shoes.

DaisyFlowerChain · 02/09/2014 11:25

£45 on shoes for new term and £70ish on the three different types of sports shoes needed. More as starting secondary otherwise would have just needed one pair of trainers.

shggg245 · 02/09/2014 11:25

Agree with 5madthings - the quality is better and so it bloody should be. It's difficult, we both work but are still always skint! And I look like a rag bag!

worldgonecrazy · 02/09/2014 11:28

15 for a pair of Lelly Kelly trainers in the sale. 10 for some Celtic & Co slippers from their factory shop. I am going to spend another 65 on some Celtic & Co boots, and a few quid on some wellies. They're not "school" shoes though so will also be worn outside school, as there is no uniform at DD's school.

passmethewineplease · 02/09/2014 11:31

Nothing! MIL to be offered to buy them for us. Think they cost about £38.

Eva50 · 02/09/2014 11:31

I usually wait until the sales but despite ds3's shoes from last year bring in near perfect condition his feet had grown a whole size. I got a 25% discount code for Brantano through Quidco so £36 clarks shoes cost me £27. These should last him most of the school year as he's not hard on shoes. I got his indoor shoes from the Vertbaudet sale for £8 (they had some lovely trainers but none to fit him) and his trainers were £28 but I had a voucher or he would have had to get cheaper ones.

MERLYPUSSEDOFF · 02/09/2014 11:32

£12 per pair in the sainsbos 25% off sale. I bought the next 2 sizes too.
Plimsoles were £1.49 in Lidl.

I must've also missed the memo Confused

Madcatgirl · 02/09/2014 11:33

Total of £110 for one child for three pairs of school shoes, pumps and trainers. We've bought dr. Martins this time though because clarks/start right were only just lasting a term.

HelpMeGetOutOfHere · 02/09/2014 11:35

Got away quite lately this year as ds2 is in adults size 9 and we brought kickers from Costco for £24, last year was over £70 at clarks or for kickers from schuh.

dd (8) is a size2 and we got lelli Kelly school shoes for £44, not the usual lelli Kelly type just plain black t bar leather. her canvas ones always lasted for years and outgrew rather than fell apart so hoping the school shoes last as well. Last year she had start rite for £43 that lasted until the last half term of the year, I brought school shoes from asda to last one half term and had to buy a new pair as after 3 days they were wrecked.

mommy2ash · 02/09/2014 11:35

i paid 12 pound for my dd' s shoes. I had her measured in Clark's but they measured her don't wrong and tried to sell me shoes that pinched. they didn't have the next size up in stock. the cheaper ones fit her fine and I she is due to go up a size anyway so no matter what i bought they wouldn't last a year

Artandco · 02/09/2014 11:43

Ds1 - £60 school shoes, £30 trainers, £6 plimsols.

I figure he will wear same shoes so often they should be good for feet, comfortable etc. Will also have a fair walk each way.

At home he currently has about 6 pairs of daily shoes he wears, so in the end cheaper as I will buy him less at home shoes as wearing less.

I usually spend approx £40-60 on most shoes for them tbh. Less for welling tons etc, more for winter boots

MissCalamity · 02/09/2014 11:58

£14 for leather hush puppies for DS.

They were reduced to £20 from about £40 on the shelf but only had one size, so he is wearing shoes that are a half too big for him but no doubt he'll grow into them quickly & at that price I wasn't moaning!
Smile

TwoAndTwoEqualsChaos · 02/09/2014 11:58

£119.99 on five pairs, but three were in the sale. The two pairs of leather school shoes made up about £80 of that. I actually mind paying a bit more for my DS' s shoes less than I do for my DD's shoes, as I know he'll get lots of use out of them, but hers will be in a dreadful way by the end of next week.

HouseBaelish · 02/09/2014 12:02

£42 for my daughter but I only ever need to buy one pair of school shoes per year as she isn't hard on them and doesn't grow much

VinoTime · 02/09/2014 14:02

I bought dd (7) a pair of scuff resistant patent shoes out of Tesco this year. I think the bigger size cost around £12.00, but I had a voucher (£10 off a £40 shop plus a 10% discount code) so really, they were much less than that. I normally fork out £35-£40 on Clarks shoes for her, but the previous two years she's needed to go into boots by the end of September until perhaps February/March time. We live in an area of Scotland that sees heavy snowfall and the weather gets cold very quickly, so I refused to spend a fortune on shoes she'd only be in for a matter of weeks. I'll save the money and put it towards a good pair of winter boots.

I should add, her wee Tesco shoes have been an absolute dream. They still look brand new and are very comfortable on her feet - absolutely no complaints this year Smile

nokidshere · 02/09/2014 14:20

Neither of mine needed shoes this week thankfully! But two pairs of trainers, one pair of football boots and some plimsolls cost me just short of £150!!

CouldntGiveAMonkeysToss · 02/09/2014 14:24

I only have one school age child, I spent 15 quid on a pair of shoes from Sainsbos, they are coated leather and look like they'll last and a really good fit.

I normally buy Clarks in the sale but obviously this time of year they didn't have school shoes in the sale (he's four so hasn't needed black shoes until now), I was Shock at the prices.
His plimsolls were 2.50, they'll only be worn once a week.

I bought Startrite once and they were shite, really thin sole that wore through and crap velcro. Clarks have always been good (if I fit them myself) but too expensive at non sale prices.

DragonMamma · 02/09/2014 14:29

50 - 25 each from a Clarks outlet shop.

I only ever paid full price for DC1's shoes at Clarks (first term, first year of school) and they were ruined in no time.

I've tried cheap and expensive and the only ones which have lasted were M&S tough coated leather ones. DD won't wear them anymore though as they aren't pretty enough apparently.

heymammy · 02/09/2014 14:30

Dd1 has Adidas trainers £22 & random pe trainers £6, both brantano sale.

Dd2 has geox trainery type shoes £27 amazon and the same random pe trainers £6 brantano sale.

Fortunately our primary school has no rules for footwear. I can vouch that leather trainers have lasted better than any of the crap that clarks dole out. Last year dd2 wore navy nike trainers for the whole school year and actually OUTGREW then this summer Shock
