I took DDs aged 10 and 6 for new shoes yesterday and it cost me EIGHTY TWO POUNDS.

DD1s were 42 and DD2s were 40! Since when did little kids' shoes cost 40 quid!?

I remember them being much less last year! Something like 28-35 pounds...am I imagining it or have shoes gone up a LOT!?

Why winni you're not a sucker - if anything this thread has reassured me that it is not unusual to fork out 40 - 50 quid. They do seem to be harder wearing I expect them to last until Easter.

akwardsazzle · 02/09/2014 10:47

too boys, 5 and 7... i bought from asda... £20 for the lot! boys that age scuff and ruin shoes easy anyway...so if i need to buy more after xmas so be it...rather replace £10 shoes than £££££ shoes! even if i had to buy three pairs each thats cheaper than the op!

NineOhThirty · 02/09/2014 10:48

Next time get their feet measured and set up some alerts on ebay for the size, preferred brands, style etc. You have to look through a lot of listings but sometimes you get really lucky. You can also use goofbid to make sure you don't miss the bid.

dancestomyowntune · 02/09/2014 10:49

Dd1 had trainers £40, school shoes £16, pointe shoes (she's a ballet dancer) £49.

Ds1 had school shoes £38 and plimsolls £4

Dr2 had school shoes £42 and plimsolls £3.50

Dd2 had school shoes £38 and plimsolls £5.

£235:50 on footwear alone!!!!

BunnyLebowski · 02/09/2014 10:49

Can't say I agree Ham.

I've only ever bought cheap (£10-20) shoes for school for DD and they last just as long and as well as the more expensive ones she's owned.

I think it's pretty pointless to spend £50 on shoes that will only fit for a few months tbh.

Maybe DD just has unchallenging feet .

MrsWinnibago · 02/09/2014 10:50

Shag they're overpriced!

£88 for a pair each for DD and DS

RufusTheReindeer · 02/09/2014 10:51

Ds1 £58
Dd £42
Ds2 £54 (same shoe as ds1 just smaller)

That's for their school shoes, trainers we get from Sports Direct so they are about the £15/£20 mark

WhenDoISleep · 02/09/2014 10:52

£56 for shoes which I am hoping last better than the Start Rites he had last year - were fine fit wise all year but were scuffed beyond redemption by mid-year.

£14 on plimsolls.

Still need to get him wellies, trainers and some none school shoes as after a year of no change his feet grew 1.5 sizes so everything needs replacing.

He started year 1 this morning with size 1 shoes on - I dread to think how much his shoes are going to cost in a few years.

Still have to take DS2 shoe shopping in a few weeks - he needs shoes, wellies and plimsolls for pre-school.

All in I'm looking at spending the best part of £200 on footwear.

SaucyJack · 02/09/2014 10:52

I bought my girls a pair of £12 leather shoes each from Matalan.

I would never buy Clarks for a child with averagely proportioned feet. They're just trading on middle-class guilt complexes. The shoes are no better quality than any other leather shoes.

Kleptronic · 02/09/2014 10:52

£129. Clarks shoes, Clarks white trainers non-marking sole, Clarks astro footy boots, rugby boots. One ten year old. Gah.

Sirzy · 02/09/2014 10:53

I don't agree with the buy cheap but twice idea. DS had m and s shoes last year and they were in fantastic condition at the end of the year. I got him Sandals from clarks and they are fit only for the bin after much less wear.

cashmiriana · 02/09/2014 10:55

DD1 is easy - women's shoes from Brantano, cost £30
DD2 is at that in betweeny stage of being in women's sizes but still having very narrow feet, so after a day trailing round shops I had to give in and get her some Clarks Bootleg, which were £40. It's infuriating because we stopped getting Clarks fitted when they were about 7, as I realised I could fit them better myself and bought off the shelf at Charles Clinkard. Unfortunately they didn't have a single pair in her size (having measured her a size bigger than I fitted her - the ones they said fitted were so large she was walking out of them!)

Winni I know they're overpriced, totally pisses me off - but my boys do have freaky paddles! So we are where we are. Saying that the shoe shop was heaving so people are clearly willing to cough up these extortionate prices! Madness!

AutumnIsComing · 02/09/2014 11:00

110 pounds for:
1 pair for eldest.
2 pairs for youngest - had emergency rush to shops last year as her expensive shoes strap failed just before school.
2 pairs for middle DC who is hard on their shoes.

3 pair of trainers for out door pe.
3 pair of indoor plimsolls for pe
3 pair of Wellingtons ( two dc will need these for school at some point)
1 pair of sandal for eldest you'd broken her pair but was still needed some.

I ended up due to cash flow issues buying very late in summer which helped - but went here www.wynsors.com.

We bought a foot measured from clarks website year before.

Not one pair of shoes last year was under 30 pounds youngest was 40 + - not one pair lasted till the summer term - though they did better that shop bought ones year before that.

We did buy online last year but the quality makes - as shoe shop had steered DD to very flimsy clarks so still 30 shoes that didn't last a bloody term.

Even if they only last a term per pair - I think we will still end up paying out less this year.

RiverTam · 02/09/2014 11:01

nothing here, as DD is going to a non-uniform primary so she'll be in her canvas Doodles. When the weather gets worse she'll need better shoes and they'll probably be £30-£35, I should think.

Ham69 · 02/09/2014 11:01

Well I'm only talking from my experience Bunny but DS plays football after school everyday and we have a fair walk to and from school and his school shoes lasted a whole year. They could have gone another few months but he grew out of them. I like my children to be in breathable leather shoes with a bit of give rather than cheap plastic ones if they're in them all day everyday. I scrimp on a lot of things but not school shoes.

WipsGlitter · 02/09/2014 11:04

£40 on shoes from Clarks and nothing on plimsoles - he's squashed his feet into last years ones!!

Notso · 02/09/2014 11:04

DD is going in £4 Primark specials until we know if black leather Vans are allowed. The head girl has them but the policy is no trainers Hmm
DS1 got new Clarks just after Whit half term which should last him until Easter. He just need PE trainers after I checked his bag and found he only had one trainer in.
DS2 has £26 M&S leather shoes, I got fed up in Clarks after the tried to sell me a pair neither of us liked. He doesn't need PE shoes until after Christmas.

AutumnIsComing · 02/09/2014 11:05

If you can hold out a few weeks - I always notice the sales of schools shoes in the shops and on-line around that time usually though I don't have spare cash as have a birthday then Christmas to put money towards.

sausagefortea · 02/09/2014 11:08

£210 on a pair of school shoes, pair of trainers and pair of casual shoes for a 9 and 6 year old. still need to get another pair of trainers for them as one pair of trainers is kept at school. I can really only go to clarks or startrite as my DCs feet are sooo thin. Truly pained me handing over my card to pay!

SmashleyHop · 02/09/2014 11:09

£30 for startrites on ebay- DS 11 has a habit of destroying shoes in 2-3 months and startrite rhinos seem to be the only ones that stand up to the pummeling he gives them.

£16 for trainers (pumas on ebay)

£9 for football boots (warrior on ebay)

Thank goodness the other DC are only in Nursery and gentle on shoes.. for now that is.

EverythingCounts · 02/09/2014 11:11

DS's were 34 from Clarks, which didn't seem terrible. Bought one pair earlier this year at a similar price. Plimsolls 2.50 from the supermarket.

Spirael · 02/09/2014 11:12

£9. DD's school operate an indoor shoe policy. They wear trainers/wellies outside (which she already had) then soft canvas shoes inside.
