Evening all :)

Fair enough. I disagree, obviously! I just don't think we'd have that much freedom.

Afewfallenleaves- thank you for watching it.

It was a pita to post it from my phone but I thought it was worth it as she is anti snp and takes a very different standpoint on independence from 'Yes Scotland'.

Have you got a particle problem with me, deeedeeee?

I can assure you that I am not being paid to post on here. It's not even funny. I have got a huge amount to lose in the next two weeks, that's all.

OP posts:
TeamScotland · 03/09/2014 22:07

But it is morally wrong to vote no, in the eyes of many yes voters.

weatherall · 03/09/2014 22:08

She wasn't pitching to people on £70k salaries like you lady Cordelia so it doesn't surprise me it didn't answer your questions.

OOAOML · 03/09/2014 22:09

I love the idea that we get paid to post here Grin I can assure you I don't and I can't imagine people being paid to post about their in laws for years to provide cover.

I admit I don't post loads elsewhere. like many others, I'm fitting in family, work and campaigning to my fairly limited time. I don't really have time to be on multiple fast moving threads.

Santana, I've already said countless bloody times that I understand that it's risky but I still think it's the right thing to do. I even admitted in thread 1 that my husband works for RBS in edinburgh, and he's prepared to look for new work, diversify, change sector, move to the country and get some chickens
If it's necessary . Not that we think it necessarily will be. But open minded because the future is unpredictable whatever happens in the referendum . In my working life interest rates have gone up and down, job security changed, house prices gone all over the shop, funding priorities changed wiping out entire sectors. Recessions, recoveries, wars, terrorism. There has been no security. Why the hell would I be worrying about the possibility of a recession after independance? At least after 4 threads of your warnings there would be a certain amount of predictability to it ;-)

Why on earth would you think
I was insinuating that I'm better than you for saying I hold different things important? That sounds like you're reading your own interpretation into my words.

SantanaLopez · 03/09/2014 22:11

Damn, my typo ruined my indignation! Grin

Deeedeee I read an article ages ago which said that the US government had planted operative in the Scottish parliament from 1999 with the aim of preventing Scottish independence because of the strategic importance of trident for US 'security'.

It may well have been one of those wacky conspiracy theories but I don't think it's a particularly far fetched one.

WildThong · 03/09/2014 22:13

I think deee dee just has a problem with all no voters actually, Santana.
All these trite references to 'covens' and 'paid' posters - makes you wonder if the lady is deflecting attention from her own motivation?

Criseyde · 03/09/2014 22:13

"Why would we want talented overseas graduates working here for brief periods."

Well partly because they pay a massive, massive amount in tuition fees to study here, and subsidise the cost of education for our "indigenous population" (as you put it). They also have to prove that they can support themselves independently, and so bring a great deal of new, disposable income into university towns and cities.

And of course, it would be better if they settle here and use their skills to benefit our economy and society - but no one is offered permanent residency upon graduation! If they can't even work here for a brief period, then they'll leave straight away - and many simply won't come to study here at all.

I'm also very definitely not a banker. I think I posted before about the "othering" that goes on towards people in financial services. Yes, some (and in reality a very small number compared to the size of the industry) people in financial services made shit decisions and did stupid things. Most of them were in investment banks/IB divisions. Stop tarring us all with that brush

firstchoice · 03/09/2014 22:18

Some ruddy loon came INTO my house tonight and put a copy of Wings Over Scotland's Wee Blue Book down deep into my hallway
(front door ajar to let cooking smell out better whilst I was in kitchen). Angry

I have had a bit of a look at it.
It has a curious winged lion 'logo' splattered ALL over it, which is unfortunately similar to certain 1930's style political movements Grin

But, honestly:

"In the last thousand years only one country has attempted a land invasion of Scotland. (In the interests of tact we wont name it but it's to the South and not very far away)." (p. 31)

^^ This is like a Primary 4 would write....

Q&A's from the 'Economy' section:

Isnt UK Govt Spending higher per person in Scotland?
"Yes."
Doesn't Scotland get more money spent on it than it generates in tax?
"Sort of " (I kid you not, this is what the wee blue book says...)
What if there was another banking crisis? Scotland couldn't afford to bail out the banks?
"That's simply not how bank bailouts work"
Wont independence create barriers to trade with the rest of the UK, which will damage the economy?
"No."

Piffle.

AFewFallenLeaves · 03/09/2014 22:19

Oh to be paid!

I even missed Norman on bake off to read this thread.

No money would have persuaded me, it's just a temporary madness induced by the realisation that we may be about to dissolve the UK.

feelingmellow · 03/09/2014 22:20

Deedee please have a lie down

weatherall · 03/09/2014 22:20

I think there are more out of EU students now than 15 years ago.

But that's just an observation.

I'm sure there'll be a stat somewhere.

wearenotinkansas · 03/09/2014 22:21

am hopelessly trying to catch up!

deeedee - I really think the BT campaign would use their resources more wisely than paying people to put thousands of posts on Mumsnet, when there seems little/no evidence that the no voters here have been successful in changing anyone's mind!

Also, FWIW, I work in one of the sectors that is supposed to flourish in an independent Scotland - renewables. But our company has put a hold on all investment here until the outcome of the vote, with the general view being that the economic climate will be too uncertain in the short to medium term if there is a yes vote.

wildthong - love the plant.

I am now buggering off again, as I need my sleep, so I can go back to my real job in the morning without having spent half the night reading Mumsnet.

I don't need paid. I'm a banker's wife. I have slaves to peel my grapes and cut my toenails.
