en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monarchy_of_Australia Apparently the Aussies only pay her expenses when she's actually there, or if elsewhere in her capacity as Queen of Australia. I imagine that's the same for oher Commonwealth countries.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 28/08/2014 18:59

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monarchy_of_Australia
Australians do not pay any money to the Queen, either for personal income or to support the royal residences outside Australia. Only when the Queen is in Australia, or acting abroad as Queen of Australia, does the Australian government support her in the performance of her duties. This rule applies equally to other members of the Royal Family. Usually the Queen's Australian governments pay only for the costs associated with the governor-general and governors in their exercising of the powers of the Crown on behalf of the Queen, including travel, security, residences, offices and ceremonial occasions.

FannyFifer · 28/08/2014 18:59

Would there be a temporary head of state during negotiations following Indy vote or does it just stay with the queen?

OP posts:
SantanaLopez · 28/08/2014 19:00

Grin at the cross posts.

It's not entirely reassuring though. Scotland's much closer than London than Australia is = more costs!

SantanaLopez · 28/08/2014 19:01

I think it would stay with the queen because independence wouldn't technically come into play until March 2016.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 28/08/2014 19:01

I imagine it would stay with the Queen as their is currently no question about whether she would be, of course, I presume she could gracefully decline?

FannyFifer · 28/08/2014 19:03

So then would the Queen have to be involved in negotiations in some way, she has to sign of on everything passed in the parliaments doesn't she, so would this be the same?

OP posts:
grovel · 28/08/2014 19:04

I imagine it stays with the Queen which is why it could be awkward for her. I met Princess Anne at a charity event recently. We didn't talk about the referendum but she clearly loves Scotland and told me that the Queen does too.

You could do a whole lot worse. She understands the role as well as anyone on the planet.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 28/08/2014 19:06

I would she would technically be involved in the negotiations, but practically not - just like politics is meant to go through her, but doesn't really.

FannyFifer · 28/08/2014 19:07

I actually don't mind the Queen & Philip, I think they work pretty hard & do a good job, it wouldn't be a job or life I would want for all the money in the world.

Would be up for being a republic when her reign is over though. Smile

OP posts:
SantanaLopez · 28/08/2014 19:07

I really don't know how involved she would be. I assume she's just a figurehead tbh, but I'd be lying if I said I definitely knew.

fibromum · 28/08/2014 19:08

I'm a No. Always have and nothing I have heard is going to change my mind.

Yesterday and today we saw two Better Together campaigners being interrupted in a bullying manor by so called yes supporters. I don't agree with a ton of stuff the yes campaign come out with but I am mature enough to listen without interupting them and agree disagree.

In the event of a yes vote I shall have to accept it but will be very disapointed.

FannyFifer · 28/08/2014 19:09

She could actually veto anything that goes through a parliament though.
Find it all quite interesting.

The stuff with Murphy is appalling, I have posted on various sites to condemn that kind of stuff.

I think he talks shite but he still deserves to let his shite be heard.

That kind of stuff does no one no favours. They are certainly not anyone involved in our local groups.

Interesting.... Maybe not just a figurehead then...

FannyFifer · 28/08/2014 19:13

Going to have to start another thread.

I agree. The pictures on twitter showing him talking to nobody were entertaining. The stuff on YouTube with him getting shouted at and egged is just wrong. I actually admire the man, I disagree with his politics but he is working really hard right now, going out on the streets to engage with people. I don't see any other politicians doing this.

grovel · 28/08/2014 19:17

Do it, Fanny, this has been one of the most interesting threads I've read on MN.

It's odd that the Scots we (huge generalisation - sorry) admire in SE England are all on the No side. Presumably they've been tainted by WM?

Murphy, David Steel, Ming Campbell, Malcolm Rifkind - even Cook, Darling etc.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 28/08/2014 19:25

I think they just genuinely believe in a UK and they don't want to lose their jobs

grovel · 28/08/2014 19:26
