DH got a delivery this morning....

My DD2 is a nightmare. She screams and cries if I put her in the pram, she's impossible to pacify in a restaurant or shopping etc...

So DH says this is the solution.

She's been quiet for 15 minutes!!!! Shock

To love this buggy!

Is that not how most posts go? A this your first day on mumsnet?

I don't really get your point.

Mmmmnnn yes i think YABU

Its a bit lazy parenting just to stick them infront of an ipad in a buggy. Plus i would be worried about the iPad falling out

Rockinghorse123 · 23/08/2014 13:38

Thank you curious I think it's fantastic. Not to use all the time but as you say on occasions where they need to sit in a buggy for a long period!! I'm v much of the opinion everything in moderation Inculding screen time

KoalaDownUnder · 23/08/2014 13:38

koala you don't have kids so you probably aren't fully aware!

Okay, fair comment if you're saying I'm not aware of how difficult it can be to deal with a baby who screams in a pram. As a non-mother, I understand that.

However, not a fair comment if you are saying I'm not aware of the effect looking at screens has on developing brains. Read 'The Brain that Changes Itself', by Norman Doidge. Babies' brains are highly plastic and are laying down neural pathways every day. Watching screens does have a negative effective on the physical structure of very young brains, even if they are watching something educational on an iPad. That's why the WHO doesn't recommend it. The benefits of the app are outweighed by the effect it has on the developing brain, basically.

So yes, maybe I would let my baby watch an iPad if it stopped her screaming in a pram. Doesn't mean I'd be right to do so.

Your child your rules I say.
I pads are widely used in primary schools now. At my friends school where she teaches they have over 300 tablets to use. They are penalised by ofsted if the technology is not available.
Lesson to learn curiousgeorgie is that mumsnet has been invaded by sour faced humourless perfect women who seemingly live in perfect glass houses with perfect children ! As if !

Aeroflotgirl · 23/08/2014 13:41

My Autistic dd used to scream and scream as a baby, it was awful and not like any cry, more like a wounded animal. I used to sit there and dh rocking her in the wee hours in the morning to baby TV, somehow the TV used to sooth her. If heeds just I say.

KoalaDownUnder · 23/08/2014 13:41

Primary school, or even kindergarten, =/= baby.

That's all people are saying.

Meant if needs must I say

Nicknacky · 23/08/2014 13:43

Lk26, that's incredibly rude of you. Have any of us said we are perfect with perfect children? I don't think we have. We all agree technology has it's place but not instead of teaching children to behave/be patient. Esp when the baby is 14 months old!

Aeroflotgirl · 23/08/2014 13:43

During a mealtdown the TV used to calm her, she had a lot of screen time under 2. Now at 7 she hardly watches TV, her behaviour has really calmed down.

Aeroflotgirl · 23/08/2014 13:46

Op if your in a restaurant, gave to take a delivery, do a bit of cleaning or fir short term fine.

Nicknacky · 23/08/2014 13:46

Aero, with respect we aren't talking about children with autism or other conditions. Of course they have their uses in situations as you describe. But we are discussing the wider use of iPads.

curiousgeorgie · 23/08/2014 13:46

She's not really a baby, she's 15 months now... A bit of iPad isn't going to do her any harm.

iPad vs playing with toys and spending time with people isn't the issue. It's iPad vs screaming, crying child. Why let her be stressed out and upset if she doesn't need to be?

lk26 · 23/08/2014 13:46

I shall repeat that it's her child and her rules. No one else should judge her.

Nicknacky · 23/08/2014 13:47

She is a baby, albeit an older baby.

Stabilosaregreat · 23/08/2014 13:47

OP, are you not worried about your dc's eye sight and strain on neck etc? I know that my eye sight has been affected negatively because of iPad usage. Seems to me a vey strange sitting position to watch something on a screen, I.e. Looking half up Hmm.
Do you use an iPad mini? Anything bigger might just be too big and too close to your dc's eyes.

Aeroflotgirl · 23/08/2014 13:48

That was just my perspective. Ds 2. 7 nt so far, dies not think much of the TV or I pad and never has

Nicknacky · 23/08/2014 13:48

Lk26, but perfectly acceptable for you to judge others who have disagreed with her?!

Stabilosaregreat · 23/08/2014 13:48

"I shall repeat that it's her child and her rules. No one else should judge her."

This is aibu. Obviously she is gaping to be judged.

Stabilosaregreat · 23/08/2014 13:50

*going to be judged..

curiousgeorgie · 23/08/2014 13:50

Stabilo - that picture isn't really how it is. I hadn't laid the seat back yet, when it's laying down its a really comfortable position and you're not too close to the iPad.

I'm not worried about it falling out because its not in the pram, it's outside it, and she watches it through the plastic.

Seriously? My daughter started school 13 years ago and they were doing individual lessons on computers from the first week. No doubt they'd use tablets today.
In fact, if they didn't I'd be asking why their education was being limited in this way. By the time they get through secondary school all their textbooks will be digital, as many of Daughter's were in her last few years of school.

Babies like tablets because babies like shiny, brightly coloured things that make noise. This is not new, it's the whole point behind cot mobiles and giving baby your keys to play with.

Ninja, no one disagrees with technology. It's a vital part of our lives but it doesn't mean babies need to watch tv on the move!

I saw one of these buggies on holiday. Child was strapped in watching tv while children ran about and played near the buggy. I was sitting with the parents talking and it just looked odd. It's easy to relax and let them have it more than necessarily and forget to let them play like children.
