She's an only child, and DH and I really want to see this film before he gets a spoiler. We have signed her up for the after school club and if I weren't still fucking unemployed had to work that day, I wouldn't think twice about using it. DH has taken the day off and we've tried several other options for childcare at the weekends/evenings without any luck.

So... aaibu to just use the childcare we are paying for?

Yes book another days leave and go then. First day is a one time affair. Cinema isnt.

I couldn't pick DS up either because I'm a teacher. He survived! However I would have loved to if I'd been able to.

thetoysarealiveitellthee · 14/08/2014 13:07

Nicknacks - think youve got a good excuse there to be fair!!!

blinkinwinkin · 14/08/2014 13:07

YADBU. What bizarre behaviour!? I work f/t and both my dcs start new schools in sept, on different days. I've arranged to work from home both days so I can be at the gate when youngest child comes out, ready to hear all about it; and at home ready with the muffins when oldest child arrives home from senior school. I would be so sad if I couldn't juggle my work to be there for them both.

DiaDuit · 14/08/2014 13:10

Dont think DS will hold resentment for that nicknacks! Grin you couldnt exactly help it could you?

EddieStobbart · 14/08/2014 13:12

Are you sure the ASC is available on the 1st day? At DCs school it's one hour for P1s this week then half days next week. ASC only available for DD2 from week after.

If it were me I'd consider it but DD2 has been heading into school for past 3 yrs to collect her sister who would be with her at ASC. I honestly think she'd be as excited about telling us about the ASC as school itself. However, in your situation definitely I wouldn't. If you do, your DH has basically taken the afternoon off to go to the cinema which you could do anytime.

thegreylady · 14/08/2014 13:15

Not in a million years would I have missed my dc first day pick up. I was a teacher and dd started with half days but my school gave me time off to meet her (along with the cm who had her for half days). We all went to cm's house and dd was happily playing with cm's dc when I went back to work.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 14/08/2014 13:17

what's the film?

Harry wins, Voldemort dies.

(I once had a thread deleted because I said that.. Grin)

yesyouare · 14/08/2014 13:19

yanbu go and enjoy the film .

EddieStobbart · 14/08/2014 13:20

Actually, I didn't pick DD2 up yesterday nor drop her off but DH did. He worked from home.

DiaDuit · 14/08/2014 13:23

DiaDuit · 14/08/2014 13:36

thanks squatting I'm in NI and schools don't start back til 1st sept. we finished last week in june.

ICanSeeTheSun · 14/08/2014 13:42

AmazingBouncingFerret, if it was the book I would have been extremely pissed off, but as it was a child aimed audience I suspect Harry would win and when I read he died in the book I was crying.

The film meh. I already read the biggest spoiler as in the actual book.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/08/2014 13:45

I saw that film this week. Do you want to know what happens?
Actually thought it was a bit rubbish :(

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/08/2014 13:46

did have some funny bits though.

Notagainmun · 14/08/2014 13:46

There are so many parents who are unable to get time off work to see their DC come out of their first day at school who must feel really resentful after reading this OP.

What makes it worse is that your going to watch a comic book film :(

AmazingBouncingFerret · 14/08/2014 13:55

God no, it wasn't the book! It was the film.

I had a lot of hate directed to me that day. Good times.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 14/08/2014 13:57

Would it make it less sad if she was going to watch something else? Notagainmun.

Dramatic much. God it's an extra hour or so not a week in Australia.

Some of you lot will be /must have been sooooo disappointed when you children came out and ave you the Hmm look when you bombarded them with questions holding back the tears and then shrugged ,when asked what they did, said "not much" and promptly sat on the sofa watching tv all evening.

RiverTam · 14/08/2014 14:01

not being able to get the time off (or going into labour) is one thing. Having the time and using it to go to the flicks is another. DD is starting school this September, half days to begin with, and I'm astonished you wouldn't want to pick her up, as you can - DD has been in nursery 3 days a week, 8.6, since she was 2 but it's a big change and a big thing.

Up to you, of course, but you did ask! YABU.

juliesarab · 14/08/2014 14:03

I have done this and used after school club when I have been off work that day. I pay for it and I will use it. DS loves it and has loads of fun.
However I am not sure I would on his first day at school- I would want to pick him up if I was able.
But I think the judgement should be yours- your kid, your after school clu, your family.

OnlyLovers · 14/08/2014 14:08

Giles, I couldn't agree more.

Notagain, way to try to guilt-trip someone. And it's none of your earthly business what kind of film they want to see. Would you be slightly less disapproving if it were a classic Bergman, or a gritty documentary, or an arthouse affair?

Topped off with a Daily Mail-style sadface ...

Seriously.

EddieStobbart · 14/08/2014 14:19

I wouldn't think any of this was any of my business if the OP hadn't asked. If someone had told me they hadn't been there at first day pick up because they were watching paint dry I would have expressed no opinion because they weren't asking for it.

I did here only because the OP asked.
