She's an only child, and DH and I really want to see this film before he gets a spoiler. We have signed her up for the after school club and if I weren't still fucking unemployed had to work that day, I wouldn't think twice about using it. DH has taken the day off and we've tried several other options for childcare at the weekends/evenings without any luck.

So... aaibu to just use the childcare we are paying for?

We were half days for the first two weeks of p1 (NE Scotland). Is it usual to go FT straight away?

SetPhasersTaeMalkie · 14/08/2014 12:23

Some but not all authorities are doing full days for P.1 from the first day.

thetoysarealiveitellthee · 14/08/2014 12:25

I REALLY need to know what the film is

ICanSeeTheSun · 14/08/2014 12:25

The cinema will alway be there you never get another chance to do the 1st pick up on the 1st day.

I feel sorry for those who have work or other commitments and can't be there.

OnlyLovers · 14/08/2014 12:26

Me too, toys!

WorraLiberty · 14/08/2014 12:27

Also, if you're both at the cinema, how can either of your be contacted if there's a problem with your child?

Surely both your phones will have to be switched off?

Gileswithachainsaw · 14/08/2014 12:30

I think people kind of have the first day of school on a pedestal.

It's really not that different to pre schoolat first and on reAlity is a bit of a let down as parents have built it up sooooluch that they are going to learn lots of things and me so many new friends. Really all they renebver is they met their teacher, met a few other kids and are wondering when the learning starts cos all they did is play.

Onviously we all know they learnt a lot more than they realise but in the eyes of a child that's all the first day was and although they have fun it's nothing majorly different on the first day to what they did at pre school.

Well that's what dd said anyway :o

4boysxhappy · 14/08/2014 12:30

Think I would go during the day whilst child is at school. Treat for myself.

However would have to pick up myself on first day. It is a huge thing in their lives and you won't be able to get that back.

Cause I would also be worried all day that it went well and need t check with teacher. However I am a worrier. Four kids later and that has never got better.

Gileswithachainsaw · 14/08/2014 12:30

Excuse typos Blush

DiaDuit · 14/08/2014 12:30

just seen that your DH has actually taken a day off work. was that so that he could be there for DD coming out of school on her first day? it seems odd that he would take the day off work (using a day's A/L) for that only to go to the cinema instead (that he can do any time) and not even see DD afterschool. what a waste of a day's A/L.

Floggingmolly · 14/08/2014 12:31

God, your dh sounds about 12. Has to see it before he gets a spoiler... Hmm. Is it the new Moshi Monsters movie?

thetoysarealiveitellthee · 14/08/2014 12:31

But but but...............

WHAT IS THE FILM??????????????

WorraLiberty · 14/08/2014 12:32

What struck me most is how exhausted mine were after doing 6 hours straight, at school.

thetoysarealiveitellthee · 14/08/2014 12:32

if its Transformers tell your DH he dies in the end..........

thetoysarealiveitellthee · 14/08/2014 12:32

Is it X men??

he dies in the end......

mrsruffallo · 14/08/2014 12:33

Why has DH taken the day off?

OnlyLovers · 14/08/2014 12:33

what a waste of a day's A/L. How judgy. People can use their holiday for whatever they want.

mrsruffallo · 14/08/2014 12:33

Great minds think alike Dia

WorraLiberty · 14/08/2014 12:33

Arf at Moshi Monsters Grin

But to be fair, the OP said they both want to see it before he gets a spoiler.

SetPhasersTaeMalkie · 14/08/2014 12:34

They do get really tired. I remember when I was in primary 1 we got mats out and had a wee lie down after lunch. Grin

KenAdams · 14/08/2014 12:34

YABVU! It's her first day ffs!

LadyLuck10 · 14/08/2014 12:36

Your priorities are messed up. You seriously would have to think about this. Your DH sounds about 12 too, a grown man doesn't want any spoilers so willing to miss his child's first day Hmm

Enjoyingmycoffee1981 · 14/08/2014 12:37

The thing is OP, you obviously want to do this, and was hoping mumsnet would encourage you to go.

Problem is, most of us wouldn't actually want to go and see a film over picking up our child from their first day of school. I honestly can't think of anything I would rather do than pick up my child on their first day of school.

HibiscusIsland · 14/08/2014 12:39

Even children who have been in nursery from 8-6 since babyhood can struggle with after school club on their first day. I know children who coped ok with the normal school day and then went to pieces when required to go to after school club too. New people, new environment, new routines, different staff. It's a lot to take in at that young age and then having to go to yet another new place after school with older kids/new staff etc etc. No way would I choose cinema over picking up from school.

DiaDuit · 14/08/2014 12:41

what a waste of a day's A/L. How judgy. People can use their holiday for whatever they want.

course they can. odd logic though to take a day off to see his DD on her first day of school and then not even do that but go to the cinema (which is on every day) I wonder did he actually book the day off to see DD or did he book it to go to the cinema? if the former, and he's not doing it then yeah, it's a waste.
