Disgusted with DP's attitude re using a disabled sticker.

Ok so we have been given my DP's recently sadly deceased grandmothers car. With this came a disabled sticker - the kind you hang from the rear vision mirror. Valid for another 2 years.

He pointed it out and said mentioned there's no need to pay/wait for parking just use this. I thought he was joking but still replied that no I wouldn't be. Cue tonight's phone call (he's only home 9 days a month but we talk everynight) where he again asked if I had and then why not? He would be.

It led to disagreement and eventually me stating that I was disgusted with his sense of importance that he would take a space someone else would really need. I ended the phone call because I just couldn't get past it.

He thinks anyone else would, and I vehemently think otherwise. It'll cause a row if he tries to do it with me and ds in the car as I won't be party to it. We're in oz so it's not policed in private car parks as far as I know but that's not the point. How to I get him to see reason?

I have a badge for me, and although it is perfectly legal for my husband to use it if on a trip specifically FOR me, he absolutely never would.

It is illegal for your DH to use it if you are not IN the car or getting into it.
He cannot even park in a disabled bay and pop into the shops if you are staying in the car, only if you are getting out.
Please read the booklet that came with your badge. If he gets caught misusing it, you lose your badge.

ADHD, your DH did this thing that most of us think is abhorrent. Your DH got caught. He didn't realise what he was doing was wrong either. No doubt he would still be doing it if hadn't got caught? So of course you are going to think it is no big deal, because you treated it as such.

You're right. Clearly people never learn from their mistakes and should never be forgiven. I better file for divorce. Anything else? :)

If you think his mother didn't put a foot up his ass for it, you'd have another thing coming. He doesn't do it anymore, and wouldn't do it again.

As I said, functional relationships don't disown each other over a shortcoming. They talk it out, they forgive. They move on.

Wait till he's home and then write a message on the bathroom mirror (one of those ones you can read when it steams up) saying it's his Gran and that she'll slap him upside the head if he uses the badge

In Australia, by law, you have to return the pass to the Department of Transport in your state when the person dies. No question about it, you are breaking the law if you use it, and he WILL get caught. Our local council is hot on catching people out and I often see them swooping on people pulling in to disabled parking bays and asking for ID to prove that the driver or passenger is the legitimate holder of the pass. I've even been asked myself several times when driving my aunt to her various errands (it's in her name).

^Notification of deceased permit holder

To notify the department that a permit holder is deceased, one of the following documents must be supplied:
photocopy of death certificate
funeral notice
coroner's report
Certificate of Authority issued by Public Trustee under the Public Trustee Act 1978.
The permit should also be returned to the department.^
