He's insisting, in the interest if fairness I don't say which if us thinks/does which, so bare with me...

When filling the kettle up for a bedtime drink 1 cup coffee pot for an early morning start

Is it normal, or a bit OCD to very carefully use the same mugs to measure out the exact amount of water needed & fill up & boil the kettle with exactly that amount of water

ie, boil only exactly 2 mugs worth of water, to fill 2 half mugs of cocoa & exactly 1 mug full of hot water for the cafetiere

Is this OTT or clever money saving, water saving genius ??

It's pure mentalness.

It's right to boil only the amount of water you are going to use.

It's OTT to measure that exactly if it's a routine, because after you've done it a couple of times you should know by eye how far on the kettle gauge it needs to be filled.

Is the measurer an engineer?

What about steam evaporation??? You need to measure the amount of steam lost and add that otherwise the whole task is pointless

That's why kettles have gauges on them, so you don't have to fanny around every time.

It's a bit OTT and if you are in a hard water area like me then you want a bit extra in the kettle because the dregs sometimes have chalky bits in them (because we are crap at remembering to descale it).

I agree with the general concept of not over filling the kettle too much.

What noblegiraffe said. I always put a bit extra in so I don't tip half a teaspoon of limescale into the mugs.

I know this is not logical but I always over fills because I don't want the bottle of the kettle water, I descale my kettle regular so don't even know why.

Well, it's definitely not "a bit OCD".

I would say it is right to only boil what you need, I wouldnt say that's it's genius. I would also say it's OTT to be so precise about it. Are you still having this debate together over your cocoa?

Bit OTT I reckon, because you might end up letting the kettle boil dry which can wreck the kettle and hurt you. Boiling an amount close to what you need isn't bankers though.

Just put in roughly the amount of water. I say it's crazy and anal to do the measuring thing

Aw. Now I feel a bit sorry for the people who do have OCD and do similar things who will read this thread and find they are crazy, bonkers mcconkers and pure mentalness.

It depends on the kettle. If the kettle has a guage then you can judge from that and the cup filling is an unnecessary faff. If it's a kettle you use on a hob (sorry can't think of the correct name) then I have a sneaking sympathy for using measuring cups once or twice but doing it every night is still madness! So actually yes it is ott.

Unless the filler of the kettle has rubbish spatial skills and the kettle has no gauge, they are being daft. Though it's good energy saving to just boil approximately what you need rather than overfilling.

water should always be freshly boiled. Once. Just before it is used.
