He's insisting, in the interest if fairness I don't say which if us thinks/does which, so bare with me...

When filling the kettle up for a bedtime drink 1 cup coffee pot for an early morning start

Is it normal, or a bit OCD to very carefully use the same mugs to measure out the exact amount of water needed & fill up & boil the kettle with exactly that amount of water

ie, boil only exactly 2 mugs worth of water, to fill 2 half mugs of cocoa & exactly 1 mug full of hot water for the cafetiere

Is this OTT or clever money saving, water saving genius ??

TIA

Aargh, you have my sympathy. My DH (yes, he's an engineer) insists on filling the kettle "just enough" because he doesn't want to waste electricity - except it is NEVER enough for two cups, so I end up making him a full cup and he gets a half cup, so he goes back to boil MORE water, defeating the whole purpose of the original exercise!

picnicbasketcase · 01/08/2014 09:40

I put more than I need in the kettle because then the excess stays warm for ages, taking less time the next time I need to boil the kettle. I thought that only boiling a small amount each time was worse for the kettle and wore it out quicker?

Droflove · 01/08/2014 12:02

I think its fine if a little quirky...but can understand it being annoying for the other party.

Crinkle77 · 01/08/2014 12:52

I try to only boil what I need but would just estimate it rather than be exact.

HolgerDanske · 01/08/2014 13:35

I don't measure, but I usually only ever fill it to minimum because I only make one or two cups at a time and I don't want to waste water or energy.

WhyOWhyWouldYou · 01/08/2014 14:39

Solve the problem by getting one of those single cup water boiler thingys that i can see linked. My brother had one and it was very good, boiled very rapidly and only ever boiled enough for a mug.

RockinHippy · 01/08/2014 20:27

Thanks for the further updates :)

I always fill the kettle to a minimum too - though DH will disagree as he is so bloody anal more precise about it

& thanks, but prefer the kettle we have, my parents have one of those kettles, yes they are good, but I don't like the style of them, so not for me.

Oh my!

I can't believe he makes a fresh coffee and microwaves it in the morning, yuck!!

Can't he stick one cup of boiled water in a flask overnight, wouldn't take long to boil in the morning. I'm actually feeling sorry for him to be so stuck in a routine to a cupful, a few seconds etc, he does sound very stressed.

FunkyBoldRibena · 01/08/2014 23:21

How about working out the volume you actually need properly one night, then using a jug to properly measure it in future.

Reheated hot brewed coffee is rank. Try looking into cold brewed coffee. It is deliciousness in a cup.

thinks just pouring a ready made cold cup of fresh coffee & microwaving it saves him time

I was about to calmly close the thread, with its now solved question, when that statement caught my eye. Based on your dh doing this, everything he does for the rest of his life, is vv unreasonable.
