I have so many friends who seem to think its fine to share "black is beautiful" type posts (for the record I don't disagree and my family is mixed) however as a Caucasian woman can you imagine it going down ok if I posted a pic of a blonde haired blue eyed child with "white and proud of it"?

I'm not actually going to do anything about it, or confront anyone - it just upsets me a bit that id be shot down as a racist white supremacist for the same type of posts

OP posts:
soulrebel63 · 31/07/2014 19:02

White is beautiful.

UnderEstherMate · 31/07/2014 19:14

Soul have you actually RTFT?

soulrebel63 · 31/07/2014 19:23

Yes, but my point is that if it was the other round round, it would be seen to be racist. But saying "black is beautiful" is perfectly acceptable.

UnderEstherMate · 31/07/2014 19:24

So, either you haven't actually RTFT then or you are just choosing to ignore any counter arguments as you are just repeating what the OP has said. Plenty of posters have explained why one is necessary and the other not.

PetulaGordino · 31/07/2014 19:24

have you read the thread? that point is addressed several times

soulrebel63 · 31/07/2014 19:29

Ok, close the thread then if the discussion is over.

UnderEstherMate · 31/07/2014 19:37

No one said the discussion is over, but you have just repeated what the OP said without adding any reasons or your own thoughts. There is no point in going around in circles.

I am actually very interested in discussing it with people who have differing opinions, but would like to understand their opinions first.

Greenwayslide · 31/07/2014 20:33

Nothing wrong with saying white is beautiful however you have the whole of society and every media outlet that already tells everyone this, so it is kind of a pointless statement.

bobsyourbuilder · 31/07/2014 20:34

Actually several people left the thread when they started being called idiots for having different POV to those still continuing it.

For some people the discussion is over. For others, not. carry on. gets popcorn

Article here that reminded me of this thread
www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2014/aug/06/marlon-wayans-said-delta-goodrem-cant-dance-thats-not-racism-its-comedy

The quotation from Aamer Rahman nails it

Thefishewife · 06/08/2014 10:18

I tell my mixed raced daughter black is beautiful to counter act the fact the world tells her it's not

fromparistoberlin73 · 06/08/2014 10:18

i agree that the media basically sends the message "white is beaitiful"- just look at the daily mail sidebar of shame- all white models and film stars

Alisvolatpropiis · 06/08/2014 10:45

It isn't racist to say "white is beautiful" but in the Western media it is somewhat...unnecessary.

GatoradeMeBitch · 06/08/2014 11:52

Hmm. I should not have clicked on this thread after reading a Diane Abbott story on the Daily Mail. Though maybe some of you should go and look at that. It's not often I see a white woman compared to a monkey...

Alisvolatpropiis · 06/08/2014 11:59

Diane Abbott is (in my opinion) an idiot. She doesn't speak for all black people, just for herself.

Plus some people do look quite simian. Gareth Bale, for example. It's face shape not skin colour.

PhaedraIsMyName · 06/08/2014 13:19

“Man I got the most UNRHYTHMIC WHITE WOMAN dancing next to me at the jay and bay concert,”

No the explanation doesn't "nail it". The comment is racist and misogynistic. Two wrongs don't make a right.

PlumpPartridge · 06/08/2014 16:02

The western media message of 'white is beautiful' can't be that effective; there are so many white kids (mostly girls) with eating disorders and massive self-image issues.

Actually maybe it is effective, but to a negative extent: it delivers the message of 'THIS VERSION of white is beautiful', meaning very very skinny with flawless blemish-free skin and perfectly manageable hair.

As a white, short, fat woman with frizzy red hair, I do not feel that western media tells me I'm beautiful. It tells me that I'm not beautiful. It also tells me that black, latina and Asian women are beautiful in more of a rounded, natural, achieveable way. Or at least that is how I think of the standards of beauty in those ethnic groups. The white western standard seems largely unattainable to me, and I assume many others Sad

I think that maybe that's part of the frustration that the op feels. I feel like I can never be considered beautiful by my own society's standards. Other societies laud different types of beauty (quite rightly) and it makes me feel a bit sad that I can't say that I feel 'insert skin colour' and beautiful, due partly to my own issues and partly to the history of my society. I mention that I'm sad and then get torn to pieces for daring to not be totally confident in my whiteness.

It's an interesting subject, basically.

Patrickstarisabadbellend · 06/08/2014 16:18

Marlon Wayne's didn't need to bring in that girls skin colour. He's a racist.

Patrickstarisabadbellend · 06/08/2014 16:19

Reverse racism? Either you're racist or you're not.
