AIBU, to be concerned about increasing anti-semitism throughout Europe

Yesterday's Sunday Times had a number of articles about increased anti-semitism in the UK. Same is happening in the Netherlands and even more so in France and Germany.

YANBU, we should all know better and be concerned.

Goldenbear · 30/07/2014 13:43

YABU/YANBU, Anti-semitism is anethema to most British and to be fearful of it, is affording it a power it doesn't have. Other countries in Europe (France, Hungry) appear apathetic in addressing this vitriolic bigotry! That is not to dismiss the feelings of the victims of the reported attacks in Britain recently but the idea that it is a wide scale occurrence, adds weight to these Bigot's beliefs that they are not in a minority!

My DH is Jewish and my MIL lives in an area that has quite a big Jewish population (not in London), my DS goes to school in the same area and there are 3 synagogues within a block away from his school- I have not heard of or seen any anti-Semitic attacks and my MIL regularly has coffee with a group of Jewish ladies that know a lot about the Jewish community within that area.

My DH recently had to work at the weekend and an EDL march walked past his office as he was going in - he joked about getting himself away from these people quickly but I don't think he genuinely felt scared as the police presence was huge and everyone was staring in disbelief rather than rallying behind them.

Goldenbear · 30/07/2014 13:44

Sorry, Hungary not 'Hungry'.

Goldenbear · 30/07/2014 13:45

bigots' beliefs not 'bigot's'

Roseformeplease · 30/07/2014 14:49

I am not calling Ed Miliband anti-semitic, far from it. What I am suggesting is that the rather foolish advisors around him are responding to perceived problems with his image, largely because of negative newspaper coverage and that the choice of a bacon sandwich was an interesting one if indeed anti-semitism is on the rise.

oops, got distracted....have no idea what my second paragraph was going to say.

john I can only presume you are being pedantic. You know very well when I used the term anti Israel it was in relation to the government's actions, both past and present I might add given that this isn't the first massacre of the Palestinian people by an Israeli government.

Hi everyone,

We don't want to stifle the discussion, but can we please remind everyone of our talk guidelines.

Obviously this is a fraught subject, but we'd appreciate it if folks could keep their posts civil and polite.

wannabestressfree · 30/07/2014 17:19

No runes and vice versa

catsrus · 30/07/2014 18:27

thank you for your contribution crescentmoon, the more we stand to support each other the less likely it is we can every perceive each other to be enemies. There are people of good will all over the world (including Israel rhr.org.il/eng/2014/01/worlds-colliding-human-rights-up-close-and-personal/) working to bring about peace and justice. Hate speech of any kind is not going to get us anywhere.

Millipedewithherfeetup · 30/07/2014 18:52

Can I ask a question please ? Does anyone know why the civillians in gaza are not being evacuated into neighbouring countries ?

VampireSquid · 30/07/2014 18:57

Mainly, other countries don't want them.

'Does anyone know why the civillians in gaza are not being evacuated into neighbouring countries ?'

Here's one take on the reasons.

www.foxnews.com/world/2014/07/24/facing-calls-to-open-gaza-border-egypt-takes-tough-line-in-rivalry-with-hamas/

Rhianna1980 · 30/07/2014 19:30

'Why aren't the neighbouring countries evacuating the palestians?'

Here's why : Lebanon has already helped more than it can take :according to UNRWA
"Around 455,000 refugees are registered with UNRWA in Lebanon, with many living in the country's 12 refugee camps. Some 450,000 refugees are registered with UNRWA in Lebanon, with many living in the country's 12 refugee camps. Palestine refugees represent an estimated ten per cent of the population of Lebanon."

PLUS another 1.2 million Syrian refugees.

The entire Lebanese population is 4 million that's before the refugee crisis . It's a poor country to start with and the surrounding crisis isn't helping either.

Jordan's situation is similar .

But that's exactly what Israel wants to do : KICK them all out ASAP.

Yet more depressing news tonight on TV. More hospital and schools were targeted ...

DikTrom · 30/07/2014 19:33

I find it depressing that people keep purposefully derailing my thread.

OP posts:
Mintyy · 30/07/2014 19:36

Dik, perhaps if you contributed a little more yourself?

Your thread title is a closed question (as I think I've already said) - the answer can only be yanbu or yabu. I don't think I've seen any yabus.

What more, on your specific question, do you want people to say?

Millipedewithherfeetup · 30/07/2014 20:12

Hi thanks for the info/link its been something that ive been thinking for a few days and I am sorry op for derailing I did not want to start a whole new thread and thought posters on here would probsbly know sorry again.

TheWitchwithNoName · 30/07/2014 20:32

Milli, that is what needs to happen but not permanently. Egypt and Israel together need to evacuate Gaza of the civilians and then both Egypt and Israel clear Gaza of Hamas and destroy the tunnels. This should all be overseen by a third country, maybe Russa, Brazil?

Gaza then needs to be rebuilt, again Israel and Egypt must help, employing the Palestinian's and moving them back in. Hamas is gone so the blockade HAS to be lifted.

There, that's my short and by no means completely thought out answer but surely it's better than what's going on at the moment? Go on, rip me to shreds, I can take it, honest Smile

TheWitchwithNoName · 30/07/2014 20:34

milli, didn't mean to directly post that back at you, more answering your question regarding the other countries taking them as refugees. I'm also not implying that you may rip me to shreds Blush

Russia, Brazil? Um, maybe not.

But as impartial as could be, most likely European tbh. Not Russia, France, US, Middle Eastern countries, countries which have a large percentage of Muslims and therefore might not be impartial (if there was a country with a large number of Jews, then I would say the same) etc;
