Peeing with the door open

grumpasaur · 24/07/2014 19:56

My husband thinks it is weird. I don't see a problem with it- especially considering I wee about 800 times a day, and the cat meows every time the bathroom door is closed! Who is being unreasonable??

GnomeDePlume · 24/07/2014 21:38

Door shut for all bathroom activity except towel stacking

RoganJosh · 24/07/2014 21:49

Open here. H might wander in and have a chat or brush his teeth, which is fine with me.

Bigbottomtwirl · 24/07/2014 21:51

I wee and poo with the door open.

GnomeDePlume · 24/07/2014 21:54

aaaarrrgghhhh!!!

When will people understand that bathrooming is private

After 20 odd years of marriage DH and I still apologise if we accidentally go into the bathroom when the other is in there!

Lauren83 · 24/07/2014 21:54

I have the door open if its just me and DP, I have overactive bladder and I go 30-40 times a day

One of our early memories together oddly was him helping me to the loo after surgery and cleaning iodine off my bits so I think that kinda set the bar for the future Blush

PhaedraIsMyName · 24/07/2014 21:54

Door closed.

Nothing to do with shame but I see someone's got that in early, but really do some of you really have excrement that smells of roses?

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 24/07/2014 21:56

Door open here, then me and DD stroll around naked aswell, we have no shame.

Glastogirl · 24/07/2014 21:57

Never shut the door! None of my family do! Even teenage dd doesn't shut the door! Usually one or more of the DC will come for a chat while I'm on the loo! Has never bothered me in the slightest Grin
DP has privacy issues and won't even wee with the door open Hmm

OscarWinningActress · 24/07/2014 21:57

I never close the door when I pee. I also have to go about eleventy-billion times a day (thanks, DC!); if I closed it every time, the door would have no hinges left. Sometimes when we have guests I start to unbutton my trousers to pee and then remember WE HAVE GUESTS and quickly have to close the door. Extractor fan ON and door closed for anything else though. That is top secret.

Our bathroom door is a slidy-on-runners affair, about 30years old and unpredictable. It often catches first time guests unawares and falls off its runners, trapping them in the bathroom. Its just much easier to leave it open!

temporaryusername · 24/07/2014 22:02

It wouldn't cross my mind to close the door with just my partner around, or also one or two close relatives I'd not worry about being around. Otherwise, would definitely close. I do think it partly depends on where you are in the house though, I'd only be facing the upstairs landing! Easier to carry on conversations with the door open!

It is probably just what you're used to. I grew up in a situation where you'd see relatives naked. Even as an adult, would still be the norm for me when staying with female relatives. Not for any purpose, just wouldn't be a problem to wander in while they were dressing/in the bath and vice versa. I'd just think nothing of it.

RobinHumphries · 24/07/2014 22:03

Where I work, I have once walked in on someone on the toilet because they left the door unlocked because they were claustrophobic!

OscarWinningActress · 24/07/2014 22:04

Slight derail: Does anyone else have a dog that barks with excitement when you pee? Mine has now been conditioned to recognize that I always go before we leave the house for a run and so she now barks every time I go, even if I'm in my pyjamas and it's dark outside (she's not very smart).

startwig1982 · 24/07/2014 22:09

We always pee with the door open unless we have visitors.

NoArmaniNoPunani · 24/07/2014 22:09

I'm happy to poo with the door open too

NoArmaniNoPunani · 24/07/2014 22:10

Not at work though

honeybeeridiculous · 24/07/2014 22:15

See DH pees with the door open and its so annoying, sounds like a horse peeing or Niagra falls Grin
Whereas I can pee in silence!

grumpasaur · 24/07/2014 22:16

Erich don't worry- I did say that as he has now mentioned that it bothers him, it won't kill me to shut the door :-).

It just seems odd to me, but it sounds from reading the thread that it really depends on how you were raised / what you are used to. Like me, my mom has a useless bladder (or rather, I inherited the useless bladder gene), and pees all the time with the door open.

Not poo though.

Although I did once have a flatmate who had no boundaries and used to come into the bathroom whilst I was showering, to chat whilst she poo'd!!!

I asked her to move out.

Pee in front of each other but not poo.

Personally, I would like separate bathrooms completely. Much nicer!

DH is still a man who loves from room to room Grin

Alisvolatpropiis · 24/07/2014 22:39

I lock the bathroom door to use the toilet even when I'm home alone. My dp has an open door policy. It drives me insane.

Alisvolatpropiis · 24/07/2014 22:40

Your former housemate op Shock

ChocolateWombat · 24/07/2014 22:44

In our house, everyone wees with the door wide open. We have a huge bathroom and no one minds weeing if someone else or the cats are In there either. Husband and children are happy to poo like that too, mwhich others in the room. I still don't shit the door, perhaps because it is a huge room and I feel people are far away even if the door is open. However, I don't like other people in the room if I am pooing.

There I have told you stuff about me, that no one else outside the family knows!

grumpasaur · 24/07/2014 22:45

Ha, former housemate is a whole other thread altogether. She was a good friend before we moved in together, and over the years, has become a good friend again.

Me making the decision to ask her to move out in favour of my sanity brought about a difficult time in our friendship. She had noooooo boundaries at all.

She even used to want to sleep in my bed because she didn't like sleeping alone, and used to call MY car OUR car and take it all the time without telling me.

That and many, many, many other violations of privacy and basic personal space!
