To think that at a buffet you can take as much as you want

Went out today with dsis. We were starving by lunchtime and there was a huge buffet where we went (hotel), it was included in the price so we took loads as were hungry.
Noticed a couple of women really staring as we loaded our plates up and also when we took lots of the mini desserts and as we walked past one loudly said " I can't believe they are actually going to eat all that"
They kept staring at us and giving us funny looks.

Made me wonder if we really did take too much, surely as we had paid and were hungry it was ok ? I felt a bit judged as they clearly thought we were greedy

And about the amount of sugar/carbs/puddings/whatever she had.

CoffeeTea103 · 20/07/2014 19:15

That's greediness and overrating right there. How do you suddenly over one day eat so much when usually you don't. I would have thought the same as those ladies, probably wouldn't have said it by my facial expression would have.

CoffeeTea103 · 20/07/2014 19:16

Over eating

Beautifullymixed · 20/07/2014 19:17

I can't believe so many people would notice how much food others are eating at a buffet.

And would judge.

I'm usually busy sorting out myself dc's and could not care less what strangers are eating or not eating.

I feel the OP has been questioned enough about what she ate-and as for her bloody weight.....Shock

Utter rudeness.

She paid for the food and she wasted none.

Nobody else's business. And as for the rude, ill brought up people who felt it was acceptable to comment - words fail me.

itsbetterthanabox · 20/07/2014 19:17

I don't think pigging out sometimes is the end of the world. Everyone's acting like this one act of 'greed' (how is that defined when there is so much food it will be wasted otherwise?) is something morally wrong! It's just eating.

LEMmingaround · 20/07/2014 19:18

Did you enjoy the food op?

HercShipwright · 20/07/2014 19:18

The appalled fellow buffet eaters may also have been concerned that there would be no puddings left for them, given the amount of puddings the OP (and her sister I guess) walked off with at the wrong time. A golden rule of buffets is to only take he puddings when you are ready for the puddings, not to waltz off with the lot when everyone else is still eating soup or salad. They probably had their eye on the crême brûlée and their chances of nabbing one must have dwindled considerably after you walked off with so many of them.

phantomnamechanger · 20/07/2014 19:18

I like my food. I will happily eat a mountain of food at a carvery, or 3 courses in a pub, no problem. I sometimes feel self conscious going up for seconds of savoury and seconds of pudding at a buffet - I might even on occasion have tried small helpings (all in one dish) of up to 4 different pudds, just to try each one. But actually, to walk off with several plates each of food, and 9 desserts, ALL IN ONE GO, is frankly not normal.

How much sugar is in that for starters?

Edenviolet · 20/07/2014 19:18

What does it actually have to do with dd being diabetic??? I'm not so it doesn't matter, 99% of the time I eat v healthily! today was a treat. A typical day for me is banana yogurt and nuts or omelette for breakfast, tea and biscuit/cracker/fruit mid morn, Greek or chicken salad for lunch, nuts, seeds or hummus and veg mid aft, chicken, fish, veg etc for dinners and usually a snack before bed.
I walk everywhere, everyday and do two exercise classes a week. Iam a normal weight.
Today was a treat, perhaps I was a bit hungry and took too much and should have made a few visits rather than one but to have people comment on that I felt was a little rude.
I will in future do a few trips if go to a buffet

Unless you had less than a small spoonful of the items on your list, that is roughly a day and a half's worth of calories for a person of your weight, btw. In one meal. I wouldn't have said anything out loud, I don't think, but fuck me, that is a LOT of food.

EleanorHandbasket · 20/07/2014 19:19

Jesus wept.

Panzee · 20/07/2014 19:19

Wish I could eat that much and be nine stone.
Nothing but jealousy from me!

MaryWestmacott · 20/07/2014 19:19

It's also considered pretty bad form to take your pudding at the same time as your main. That normally raises eyebrows. How did you know you'd want all that pudding after your main? (Or that if you were still hungry after your main you wouldn't want to go back for more main rather than move onto sweet).

Reading it back, it sounds like you effectively had a 3-4 course meal, but collected it all in one go and had it all sat on the table in front of you. It's never easy to look classy in those circumstances, and it looks like you don't trust them not to run out of puddings before you've got to that stage...

MrsBoldon · 20/07/2014 19:19

The OP does care though - otherwise she wouldn't have started the thread.

People that don't care if other people have an opinion on being greedy in public - fair enough; fill your boots if you're not bothered about how it looks.

If you DO care then yes; people will look if you're taking huge piles of food at a buffet in one go. And yes; they will think you're being greedy.

Because you are.

Nobody should comment or stare but I can't believe anyone would think it would look usual.

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 20/07/2014 19:21

That is a ton of food and has to be at least a days worth of calories, just for lunch!
I would be shocked to see that as even my 15st DP doesn't eat like that, even at a buffet, I wouldn't comment though. I can't believe you ate dinner after that though. [shocked]

Edenviolet · 20/07/2014 19:21

I appreciate the fact I should have done more than one trip although I probably would have eaten the same amount !

OP posts:
BOFster · 20/07/2014 19:21

I think the diabetes thing is tangentially relevant, as you are the one teaching your kids about normal eating habits, and that sort of binge isn't exactly a great example, is it? I'm sure that's not easy to hear, but you did ask. And you asked why some

MaidOfStars · 20/07/2014 19:21

The blatant gluttony is a bit offputting, for sure. However, while it may have seemed to you that the hotel wouldnt run out of, say, creme brulees, clearly they are going to at some point. It's the disregard for others that winds me up.

Seems like you were up very early on, so lots of people to follow you. Do you feel there would have been sufficient food for all, had everyone taken as much as you? The problem with buffets is that it's impossible to judge that, although I'd have a fair shot at guessing that the hotel didn't envisage having to cater for four creme brulees per person plus other desserts Therefore, better for everyone to have one plate, then have a second, if necessary, from what's left. And if there's enough for a third, knock yourself out.

You don't take what is very clearly more than your fair share on your first pass.

BOFster · 20/07/2014 19:21

why someone would comment- well, I guess because they were shocked?

OnlyLovers · 20/07/2014 19:21

Now the OP feels she has to outline her food and exercise routines to justify ONE blow-out at a buffet!

Seriously, everyone needs to lay off. There are so many threads on here with people giggling faux-guiltily about how much ice cream or bags of crisps or whatever they've just eaten, and no one comes on and holds up a calorie sheet and clutches their pearls. Isn't everyone entitled to just stuff their faces occasionally?

Edenviolet · 20/07/2014 19:22

But lunch was 1230 and I had dinner at 530 so was hungry again by then as hadn't snacked. It was a small portion of lasagne and a huge salad of watercress and cucumber so not a huge dinner.

OP posts:
WorraLiberty · 20/07/2014 19:22

How on earth does somebody who eats normally 99% of the time, actually pack that lot inside them, without being sick half way through in order to pack the rest in? Confused

It just doesn't seem physically possible to me?

Seriously op don't bother doing multiple visits just so other people don't feel awkward at the idea that women eat!

Maybe it is about women eating, I have seen loads of time on MN people talking proudly about how much their DH/DP can put away and how they need a ridiculous amount of food. They usually follow it by saying he is 9 stone or something silly.

It doesn't matter what you weigh, eating vast quantities unless you are an athlete or something is not good. There is such a thing as visceral fat, thin people can have high levels of fat, more dangerous as it covers their internal organs

Edenviolet · 20/07/2014 19:23

The dcs were not there and like I mentioned 99% of the time I eat very healthily
