To think that at a buffet you can take as much as you want

Went out today with dsis. We were starving by lunchtime and there was a huge buffet where we went (hotel), it was included in the price so we took loads as were hungry.
Noticed a couple of women really staring as we loaded our plates up and also when we took lots of the mini desserts and as we walked past one loudly said " I can't believe they are actually going to eat all that"
They kept staring at us and giving us funny looks.

Made me wonder if we really did take too much, surely as we had paid and were hungry it was ok ? I felt a bit judged as they clearly thought we were greedy

Is that all? Poor show.

Glastogirl · 20/07/2014 18:43

This can't be real... The 6 pieces of bread alone would fill you up let alone the rest Hmm

ChocolateWombat · 20/07/2014 18:43

I think this is a wind up!
OP says that she took several plates. Says that once written down it doesn't look like much.....but then a massive list starting with 6 slices of bread!

I think buffet etiquette at an eat all you can place, is to take one plate and to return as much as you like. They deliberately give small plates to avoid waste as many people have eyes bigger than their stomachs and get carried away and take far more than they can eat. People are free to return, but when doing do, take less second time, as their stomachs have had a filling already. This small plate thing avoids waste, as well as helping the profits of the firm.
I do think it would be poor form to take several plates and load them up on any individual trip to the table, because it is perfectly possible to keep returning. Eating out, even at a buffet is a civilised social affair, and the idea that anyone needs to pile many plates so high, so as to avoid coming back to the table, just sounds greedy and unnecessary in a social setting - poor manners really. However, it was also poor manners for someone to comment on it.

Still think the thread is a wind up though, as OP is goading people by mentioning lots of plates and ridiculous long list of food....all designed to get a reaction, as so clearly greedy!

juneybean · 20/07/2014 18:44

I can easily chomp my way through 6 slices of tiger bread

BrianButterfield · 20/07/2014 18:44

I eat loads at buffet restaurants, I love them and can eat a lot! As long as you don't leave any, it's fair game. The owners must love all those people who let some bizarre set of personal rules stop them eating what they actually want.

Edenviolet · 20/07/2014 18:44

The jelly was tiny, cakes small ish and creme brûlées in medium sized tea cup sort of pots. The small plates just made it look like more food!
Iam still bf ds2 as well so get really hungry

GiveTwoSheets · 20/07/2014 18:45

I'm only going to question why you ate so much bread as you could of had more room for chocolate slices

MrsBoldon · 20/07/2014 18:45

I agree this must be a joke. Even hungry people don't need that amount of food.

Very rude of people to comment but yes, you were very greedy!.

BrianButterfield · 20/07/2014 18:45

And of course they were teeny puddings, they always are.

Edenviolet · 20/07/2014 18:46

Not a joke thread at all I promise. I was just surprised people were so openly judgy to us.

WorraLiberty · 20/07/2014 18:47

That's a shit load of food no matter what size the plates were though

Are you a fast eater OP?

I'm wondering if you'd just started with the soup, croutons and six slices of bread...then gave yourself time to digest it, you might not have eaten so much?

juneybean · 20/07/2014 18:47

They were probably mumsnetters

JoeyMaynardsghost · 20/07/2014 18:47

Personally I think that a buffet is a buffet and you're meant to use one plate, not multiples at a time. Nothing wrong with going back to get more.

BUT

As a rule if anyone looks or stares at your family while eating, why not challenge them and say "did you want something?" as they will most probably be too embarrassed to say it to your face. Or nudge whoever you're with and say something under your breath, and then both burst out laughing while both looking straight at the person who is staring at you. Return their bad manners straight back to them.

NellyNoodle1 · 20/07/2014 18:48

Well it was a bit much what do you expect. I also don't think 7am until 12.30pm is a massive time to wait between meals.

I'm not too bothered normally at restaurants and hotels (you would have got a look though I'm sorry especially with more than one plate) but get really wound up at weddings and parties. My DP's family make me want to crawl up my own backside sometimes - they have vaulted to the table before the DJ has got the word 'buffet' out and are piling mounds onto their plates like they've never eaten before. I was so worried at my DP's party that I probably had twice as much food as needed in case they ate it all.

Take a reasonable amount and go back again if you eat it all.

BrianButterfield · 20/07/2014 18:48

I'm sure they're all at home watching a tiny TV, nibbling a dry cream cracker and feeling very superior to you now. But you got the benefit of a gorgeous buffet lunch, so who's the winner there?

BIWI · 20/07/2014 18:48

No wonder you're hungry all the time - you're practically mainlining carbs!

Can you really not see that you have eaten a ridiculous amount of food?

Edenviolet · 20/07/2014 18:48

I'm not a majorly fast eater, I like to enjoy my food.

But so what if she did eat a lot of food? What difference does it make to you? It was paid for honestly.

iK8 · 20/07/2014 18:49

In a bit will you make a cocoon around yourself before emerging as a beautiful butterfly?

6 pieces of bread and 4 creme brûlées!!

WorraLiberty · 20/07/2014 18:50

As a rule if anyone looks or stares at your family while eating, why not challenge them and say "did you want something?"

You know they're going to answer with, "Yes I did but thanks to you, there's nothing left" Grin

amyhamster · 20/07/2014 18:50

I'm waiting for the op to tell us she and sis are 8 stone nothing

WallyBantersJunkBox · 20/07/2014 18:51

How big was the bread slice?

Are we talking baguette or full size loaf? Baguette wouldn't be too bad.

But filling up on bread at a buffet is BU. Grin

Edenviolet · 20/07/2014 18:51

Usually at home I have things like Greek salad/chicken salad/omelettes so get a lot of protein, I tend to avoid bread crisps etc but today was v hungry.
Still feel hungry most days but have always been like this since I was a child, my ds1 is the same. Always hungry with clearly a v. Fast metabolism

That is a humungous amount of food. What did you have for breakfast? What will you have for dinner?
