To think that at a buffet you can take as much as you want

Went out today with dsis. We were starving by lunchtime and there was a huge buffet where we went (hotel), it was included in the price so we took loads as were hungry.
Noticed a couple of women really staring as we loaded our plates up and also when we took lots of the mini desserts and as we walked past one loudly said " I can't believe they are actually going to eat all that"
They kept staring at us and giving us funny looks.

Made me wonder if we really did take too much, surely as we had paid and were hungry it was ok ? I felt a bit judged as they clearly thought we were greedy

2 eggs plus filling plus toast is about 300 calories, plus a piece of fruit and you are looking at a decent breakfast.

I don't know many people who could cope on a daily average of less than about 1300 calories, and breaking them up evenly is better for energy usage - so a breakfast of a yogurt OR fruit OR one slice of toast just doesn't cut it in terms of health.

Veg and hummus - stick a couple of oatcakes and maybe some cheese on the side, follow it with a different piece of fruit and I'll concede it's a decent lunch.

Hedgehog: Funnily enough this morning I was wondering how you and your family are. I'm glad you had a good day out. You certainly deserve it.

80sMum · 20/07/2014 21:40

Good God, OP! That's an astonishing amount of food for one person to eat at one sitting! It would last me for a couple of days at least! I can't imagine how anyone could eat that much in one go and not be sick!

Food for a day, for me (today):
Breakfast 0800, 3 crumpets and 2 cups of black coffee.
Lunch 1330, 1 banana, cheese sandwich.
Supper 1845, M&S superfood salad
Snacks, 1 apple at 2100

It's amazing the difference between the amounts that different people eat, and yet they are the same size! My BMI is probably higher than yours OP! Mine's 22, so not overweight but I am definitely not skinny!

Thankyou paxtecum. It was a lovely day (weeks of planning just for me to be away 9-5 but very relaxing and definitely just what I needed).

I don't think it was a half egg omelette stealth it was 1/2 as in 1 or 2, surely?

bander
And right back at ya! Thanks

Too many judgy pants here today.

Some folks must be getting half strangled by their bloomers tonight over a well enjoyed meal.

I feel like a buffet blow out myself. Care to join me? Grin

slithytove · 20/07/2014 21:48

I didn't say half an egg, I said one or two Grin stupid forward slash

PrimalLass · 20/07/2014 21:51

HercShipwright - I would say that if you think yogurt on its own (maybe 150 cals tops) is a breakfast, that carrot sticks and hummus is a meal, etc, then you are not eating enough.

slithytove · 20/07/2014 21:51

Yes phantom!

This thread is so funny Grin or maybe it's a sugar high from my afternoon excesses

PrimalLass · 20/07/2014 21:52

An omlette made with two eggs and a little butter is maybe 200 cals, at a push.

Banderwassnatched · 20/07/2014 21:53

Why-aye!

Anywho- if it's bad manners to fill several plates at a buffet, it's worse manners to sit and tut about it. I also think it's pretty poor form to dissect what other people have eaten and tell them it's too much (or, for that matter, not enough), especially when the OP wasn't looking for health advice. She asked about buffet etiquette. As long as you're not eyeballing me, or taking things off of my plate, I don't care what you do. None of my business at all.

Pumpkinpositive · 20/07/2014 21:54

I'm incredulous that someone who otherwise eats normal portion sizes would be able to consume that amount without being violently sick. How can that be possible on a stomach unused to having to accommodate such vast quantities? Confused

I would have gawped, and probably been a bit repulsed, but certainly wouldn't say anything.

TheLovelyBoots · 20/07/2014 21:55

I glances a few times at someone taking that amount of food. That's quite a lot. Didn't you consider just doing it in a few trips instead?

TheLovelyBoots · 20/07/2014 21:56

I think buffet etiquette includes taking something in the vicinity of a normal adult lunch. Even normal + 50% probably passes muster. But what the OP describes is over the top.

TheLovelyBoots · 20/07/2014 21:57

Sorry, I would glance

Rubbish. I'm on, I'd say, probably about 1000 calories a day. I don't eat meals. But on occassion, I can eat a full roast dinner and pudding, plus coffee and maybe cheese to boot.

Smashing.

It's - soup and bread
Plate of assorted salad bits
Some tiny tiny puddings - probably adds up to two slices of cake?

Not three days worth of food FFS.

slithytove · 20/07/2014 21:59

You need to check out my family at a BBQ or on Christmas Day pumpkin

It's like we are preparing for a famine the amount we somehow put away

TheFairyCaravan · 20/07/2014 22:00

I think the trouble with buffets is people eat things because they are there. I know DH does. He is a bugger for it. If there are biscuits in the house, he'll trough the lot. We went on an AI holiday, he pigged out like there was going to be rationing or something.

BrianButterfield · 20/07/2014 22:00

I like to warn people, Joey style. "You're about to see something special."

standwellclearvehiclereversing · 20/07/2014 22:01

Could you keep us updated on how you are, OP?

I want to know if you disappear into a chrysalis tonight and reappear as a butterfly next week Grin
