Went out today with dsis. We were starving by lunchtime and there was a huge buffet where we went (hotel), it was included in the price so we took loads as were hungry.
Noticed a couple of women really staring as we loaded our plates up and also when we took lots of the mini desserts and as we walked past one loudly said " I can't believe they are actually going to eat all that"
They kept staring at us and giving us funny looks.

Made me wonder if we really did take too much, surely as we had paid and were hungry it was ok ? I felt a bit judged as they clearly thought we were greedy

Honestly, it never fails to stagger me, the ignorance some people have when it comes to TYPE 1 Diabetes. A few posters on here really should educate themselves about it.
I realise this is probably mostly due to the medias constant blanket coverage of TYPE 2 diabetes (which I understand they are also misrepresenting in many ways) but it still always saddens me. People who are so ignorant make life even more difficult than it already is for young children already suffering from a horrible and very serious disease. Sad
I so wish they had given type 1 and 2 different names.

Op - It does sound like you took way too much food at once in this case. It also sounds like you realise this now anyway and probably wouldn't do it again. You've said that this isn't how you normally eat, so I imagine this was some kind of treat for you. Hope you enjoyed it and the comments didn't ruin it too much for you. Smile

It's odd, I spend a average amount of time "in public" - on public transport, in restaurants, generally out on the street - and yet I've never ever had someone make a nasty comment at me, or heard anyone make a nasty comment about me.

Am I just not listening?

I know that it can't be because I never do anything that anyone would find comment-able, because if there's one thing I've learned from MN it's that even the most innocuous-seeming actions have more than one "right way", and that people fee very strongly that their right way is the right way.

The salads had tablespoon sized serving spoons, I had probably 2 spoons that size of each salad, it looked more than it probably was all piled up.

I don't know why there's so much discussion about weight, rather than the dangers of binge eating?

If the OP eats healthily most of the time, surely the shock to her body from that amount of food/sugar etc, is going to cause problems somewhere along the line?

Exactly Banderwassnatched! It's not as though the calories are all waiting in reserve somewhere until you hit 40, they're gone and you didn't put on the weight. Got away with it!

Is being 'greedy' eating any more than you need? Because if so I'm sure everyone does that fairly regularly and every time at a restaurant. So why does it matter that the op had a bit more?
Whatever the weight of the op is really not relevant. Firstly the reason to eat healthy is not simply to be slim and secondly you can eat junk food, be unhealthy and be very thin so it really is stupid to bang on about her weight.

It might do but I'm willing to risk that on the odd occasion (3-4times a year) that I really eat a lot like today hopefully won't cause any huge problems. I have very little pleasure in my life due to various thing and eating nice food occasionally is a treat I enjoy.

I know someone who runs a catering firm. Whenever they do finger buffet they now man it themselves to ensure that there is always enough to go around, because you always get greedy, selfish people who pile their plates sky high meaning others may not getting any food.

Rhine it is different at a catered event. The op was at a buffet restaurant. At a restaurant they are always replenishing and you are paying your own bill. At a catered event eg a wedding you didn't pay plus there's only a limited amount so it's obviously that everyone can only have an equal amount.

Why is it not healthy? Fruit, yogurt and nuts or omelette for breakfast, snacks such as nut, seeds, hummus veg sticks etc. lunches/dinners like Greek or chicken salad and protein and veg, sometimes with brown rice for dinner. I drink tea or water. How is that not healthy?

Because it's too much. Fruit is breakfast. Yogurt is a breakfast. I suppose omelette is a breakfast too (although a big one). But all of them together?? Hummus and veg sticks is a meal not a snack. The routine you set out upthread had 4 or possibly 5 not small meals in it, plus maybe biscuits for a snack. Individually, all healthy except perhaps the omelette. But the amount you seem to be eating is just...quite a lot. You can overeat healthy food as well as unhealthy food. You seem to think it works for you, but I don't think the sheer amount could be described as healthy for most people.

Its not fruit etc AND an omelette! One or the other and I usually have a banana (small) couple of dessert spoons of natural yogurt not a whole pot and some nuts.
If I have tea and biscuits its 1 biscuit and tea with no sugar.
Hummus and veg is not a meal, I have a small carrot chopped up, half a pepper and probably about four slices of cucumber.

For a main meal it will be for eg 1 chicken breast, admittedly lots of veg, mange tout, baby sweet corn, peas, carrots etc and sometimes something like brown rice or w meal pasta but not too much! My portions are not huge but if I have salad its a big salad, half a bag of watercress, lettuce, cucumber etc. I don't think that's unhealthy?

Don't eat a lot of fruit or ever drink fruit juice it tend to get my five or more a day from veg and salad.

I dont mean to be a worry wuss or whatever it is called.

But I do know 3 people who had heart attacks[one fatal] after consuming large meals, larger than they were used to.

Just thought that I ought to say that.

An apple, or a yoghurt is not breakfast at all. What's that like 170 calories?

Actually, a 1/2 egg omelette with a piece of toast and a piece of fruit sounds far better.

And crudités with hummus? A meal? That's ridiculous and if someone had that for their dinner every night I would be concerned that they had an ed.

Herc I think you have a very skewed idea of a healthy diet.

A piece of fruit followed by crudités and hummus for lunch followed by something similar for dinner several hours later is a very unhealthy diet.

Why?

Why do you need validation for a meal you paid for and enjoyed?

I'm baffled why anyone cares what someone in a restaurant is eating or on a forum.

And who has the rule book to say what is too much?
Who makes the rules?

You said on page two that you have a huge appetite, you've always eaten lots, and also that you snack a lot.

That doesn't really match with this as a thrice yearly blowout.

If it was a one off huge blowout then you must have known you were eating an amount that would draw looks from others.

I just felt a bit surprised people made a comment about the food I took but I have said I will make a few trips next time not over pile on one trip.

In regards to justifying my diet, I've been answering questions asked and responding to other posts as I can't see why the occasional treat is not ok when I'm healthy the rest of the time
