To think that at a buffet you can take as much as you want

Went out today with dsis. We were starving by lunchtime and there was a huge buffet where we went (hotel), it was included in the price so we took loads as were hungry.
Noticed a couple of women really staring as we loaded our plates up and also when we took lots of the mini desserts and as we walked past one loudly said " I can't believe they are actually going to eat all that"
They kept staring at us and giving us funny looks.

Made me wonder if we really did take too much, surely as we had paid and were hungry it was ok ? I felt a bit judged as they clearly thought we were greedy

Yanbu it's none of their business! Are they staff Hmm

sixlive · 20/07/2014 20:18

I used to be able to eat anything I wanted I hit my late 30s and the weight started to stick. It's very hard to kick the habit of eating anything you want. To lose weight I have to eat minuscule portions in my 40s it's not fun.

Edenviolet · 20/07/2014 20:19

But I also eat healthily and exercise. Most of my meals the rest of the time are based around protein and salad and veg. I do not eat over the rec amount of calories a day so I have no reason to think I would suddenly pile weight on?
Today was a treat, not the norm

Thank you six

It is no guarantee that you will always be able to eat vast amounts of food without ever piling weight on

Goldenyellow · 20/07/2014 20:21

It happens gradually Hedgehog

juneybean · 20/07/2014 20:22

I presume it was a one off considering you were at a hotel.

Makes me want to go away for a weekend so I can stuff myself Wink

Serenitysutton · 20/07/2014 20:25

Golden yellow why are you so worried about her putting on weight later? And what makes you think she isn't capable of dealing with it when it happens? There are people with willpower, not everyone who puts on weight gives up, goes all out on it and goes type 2 diabetes and a jumblance you know.

slithytove · 20/07/2014 20:25

Pasta and potato salad on a plate Shock

At the BBQs we host, I regularly provide and expect people to take one of each of the following:

Pasta salad, potato salad, baked potato, burger bun, sausage bun, piece of French stick. I think that's all of the carb options Grin

mommy2ash · 20/07/2014 20:26

I am clearly in the minority but other than the bread I didn't think it sounded that bad

Edenviolet · 20/07/2014 20:26

But I can't see why it would? Not when I eat healthily and remain active the majority of the time? Iam not overeating on a daily basis I have a few treats (like today) probably once every few months, Christmas, Easter, my birthday etc. I have not eaten crisps in a few months I tend to snack on veg sticks, nuts, seeds etc and don't even have much fruit, I see absolutely no reason why i would put on weight even slowly over time if I stick to the same sort of eating?

I remember once on holiday someone piled their plate with eggs, sausages, bacon, maple syrup, French toast and then piled a couple of extra pastries on top of it all and a couple of pots of yoghurt on the side. That was gluttony at its best.

ExamStresses14 · 20/07/2014 20:27

Was it a red hot buffet that you went to by any chance OP? If so, their portions are tiny and four creme brûlée's would be about the average size of a normal one. Ditto most of the things you've mentioned. Our family (who also eat well but are fairly slim) manage several portions of pudding there as they are literally mouthfuls of puddings, not a whole dessert.

If it's not a red hot buffet type establishment then I'm amazed at the quantity of food!

Goldenyellow · 20/07/2014 20:28

I am not so worried serenity

Just interested because it makes me laugh when people think they can eat loads and get away with it and then it hits them when they get to a certain age

Interested from an academic point of view with have been an organiser of medical trials

bigTillyMint · 20/07/2014 20:29

OP, you are tall and very slim - you clearly do not overeat on a regular basis. I imagine you had a spoonful of each salad and small portions of all the different things so that it probably sounds a lot more than it really was.

But how did you carry it all? Are you an octopus?!

Serenitysutton · 20/07/2014 20:29

Why does it make you laugh? Doesn't seem very funny

Goldenyellow · 20/07/2014 20:30

Bodies change hedgehog, look at your daughter getting a virus that changed her life

So I do not understand why are you so determined that things won't change Hmm I am not saying that they definitely will but just don't make assumptions that's all

HercShipwright · 20/07/2014 20:31

You keep saying you eat healthily OP but your daily routine as set out earlier in the thread doesn't sound healthy.

Goldenyellow · 20/07/2014 20:31

People think it is funny that they can eat loads and not put weight on

Same thing I guess Grin

Banderwassnatched · 20/07/2014 20:31

It almost implies that you think the twenty hamburgers I ate one day at 20 will suddenly appear on my arse at 40. Wouldn't it be more accurate to say that I did get away with it? After all, I can't prevent middle aged spread at 40 by eating like a bird now.

Goldenyellow · 20/07/2014 20:32
Grin

Sorry I am thinking of a hedgehog with octopus legs now

Thanks for that bigtilly

Edenviolet · 20/07/2014 20:35

Why is it not healthy? Fruit, yogurt and nuts or omelette for breakfast, snacks such as nut, seeds, hummus veg sticks etc. lunches/dinners like Greek or chicken salad and protein and veg, sometimes with brown rice for dinner. I drink tea or water. How is that not healthy?
A few months ago (march/April time) I was having chocolate and cake quite often, it didn't affect my weight but I didn't feel 'well' and now I feel so much better.

Nicknacky · 20/07/2014 20:35

Haven't you previously posted about your eating habits, Hedgehog?

Edenviolet · 20/07/2014 20:36

We carried three plates each and did admittedly pile the puddings up so much that it took a lot of balancing.

No idea what a red hot buffet is so I can't say yes or no!

OP posts:
Edenviolet · 20/07/2014 20:37

Yes I did, a few months ago when I was eating 'junk' for energy, it was on here I got the advice to add lots of protein to my diet which I did, eggs, nuts etc

I come from a family of think people with big appetites and have two teenagers and a somewhat greedy husband. I find it incredibly distasteful to watch people being greedy, and hate waste. I don't go to all you can eat buffets if I can help it as a result because watching people pile their plates high and so much food being thrown away isn't my idea of fun.

At work events which often have buffets I might take startery and main type things together to save queuing but would never take pudding type things too becasue I won't know if I'll be hungry enough to eat them and I wouldn't have any hands left in any case.

Looking at the OP's list I'm not sure I actually believe it. She says the plates were small but even so I don't think that it's possible to carry that many at once. If I saw someone coming away from a buffet with the following:
A plate with soup and six pieces of bread
A plate with five salads
A plate with five deserts and
A plate with four tea sup sized creme brules I would be watching with amazement that they didn't drop at least one plate on the way to their table! And yes I would also think they were a bit of a greedy pig. I'm glad it didn't go in the bin though.

As an aside it sounds like a bit of a rubbish buffet. When I'm hungry I'm looking mainly for protein.
