to be disappointed that some of my family hate our PFB's name

Our little boy is 7 weeks old and some of my family don't like the name we chose. This includes my dad and my grandmother. Their first reaction on the day he was born was "Really? ... Oh. Right. Well, it's not really my cup of tea, no. I'm not a fan". The next day I thought they might have gotten used to it, but no, "I just can't get used to it. I think I'll call him the initial". And ever since the birth they've avoided referring to him with his actual name, instead they make up pet names.

I didn't announce the name before the birth, wanting to avoid negative comments, and expected people to be too polite afterwards to say anything if they didn't like the name. So I feel that this is quite rude. However, they probably see it as being open and "wearing their heart on their sleeve". It just hurts my feelings though! Sad My dad is a kind and loving man but can sometimes be a bit tactless.

Btw, it's not a really wacky name, not made up or strangely spelt, just a traditional name which is uncommon these days.u

I love the name Gaylord.

I realise I am alone in this and therefore wouldn't inflict it on a child. My DS (who has a 'normal' name) is mightily relieved Grin.

Bettercallsaul1 · 20/07/2014 16:18

Yes, definitely agree that some names should stay in the realm of imagination...

SweetTeaVodka · 20/07/2014 16:18

I loved that thread, JellyStrawberries Grin

OP, I think Quentin is a lovely name and your family are incredibly rude. I worked with a Quentin a few years ago and he was a lovely guy so very positive association for me.

Congratulations on your new arrival. Thanks

squoosh · 20/07/2014 16:21

I would be taken aback to meet a little Quentin but would hopefully be polite enough to hide any negative feelings I had about the name.

That is hilarious! Is that actually true? (I'm scared to Google in case it isn't.)

It is kind of like Hector! Though traditional not often heard etc etc.

I would be surprised to meet a baby Quentin but I don't think it's terrible.

I did wonder if you had called him Ptolemy for a moment.

Bettercallsaul1 · 20/07/2014 16:36

Does he compete in the Silly Walk? (reference for Monty Python fans only)

Bettercallsaul1 · 20/07/2014 16:40

Ah, didn't post in time! Thanks for the proof, Kate! (He looks a very nice, serious, unsilly gentleman.)

Idocrazythings · 20/07/2014 16:44

According to my MIL only serial killers have three names (we gave DS two middle names). She actually said that to DH. She also provided us with some alternative name choices that DH's brother would use, if he had a baby. This was all after DS was already born and named!! Some people just have no tact.

phantomnamechanger · 20/07/2014 16:44

slithery

really?? ye gods!

RufusTheReindeer · 20/07/2014 16:44

Oh I like Quentin

I thought it was something really weird

phantomnamechanger · 20/07/2014 16:47

I think unusual names are fine but parents should be careful that they are not going to make their child a laughing stock. I know someone called Miles Long whose parents maintain they did nothing wrong!

It's not them having to go round introducing themselves by that name though is it.
as in
"Hi there, I'm Miles Long" [phnar phnar & big wink]

Deftones · 20/07/2014 16:48

I'm running through a list of serial killers in my head and, nope, not all of them have 3 names...DD has 2 middle names cause I'm a greedy bint Grin hope she goes on to not kill anyone or many folk!

deftones she provided examples... The only one I can remember is Lee Harvey Oswald and that is memorable because 1. He's not a serial killer and 2. He doesn't have 3 Christian names. Strange, strange lady really. I think my DH just laughed at her. DS had 2 because he was our last child and only boy and we just had to use all the names!

GirlsWhoWearGlasses · 20/07/2014 16:53

Hmnn...I do think they are being rude, but on the other hand, it's your DS that has to go through life with the name you've picked out, it's not you who has to live with it, so I can understand family concern if they thought it would make his life harder.

One of my nieces has, in my opinion, an horrendously ugly name. I cringe calling it out in the park. I would never, ever say that to her parents though. They must like it. I do think it's a bit cruel though.

steff13 · 20/07/2014 16:53

Quentin is a perfectly fine name. "Q" is kind of a cool nickname, though. :)

Congratulations!

Hakluyt · 20/07/2014 16:55

Slithery was a wind up thread.

I can never understand why people object so much to people using their own nicknames and pet names for their children. My ds has a very normal two syllable name with loads of shortenings and he is known by about 10 different names by different people. Including Bean by one lot of cousins because they said he had a head shaped like a baked bean when he was a baby! I call him the version I like- he decides what he introduces himself as- the different names reflect the different relationships he has with family and friends.
No something to get in a stew or fall out over- in my opinion.

Deftones · 20/07/2014 16:57

Haha my degree was in psychology and criminal behaviour, I have many a vast list of shite in this noggin.

There are some with 3 names but I wouldn't say it was a determinant Wink

Ilovenewts · 20/07/2014 17:02

I like the name question but can't imagine it on a baby for some reason ?

I love Mabel as well. Vera not so much but it's ok. Rex is lovely.

Anyway. Your relatives are bing very rude.

Ilovenewts · 20/07/2014 17:04

Hahaha Quentin !!!!! Not question that would be horrendous.

Idocrazythings · 20/07/2014 17:06

Let's hope deftones Confused
