to hate line drying my washing

PopcornFrenzy · 17/07/2014 08:30

my mother was here yesterday and my washing had just finished so I popped it all in my tumble.

She said I was being silly and not using the lovely weather, she used to line dry everything when I was a child.

I replied I do 1 load of washing a week and she can mind her own business.

I hate the feeling of line dryed towels and clothes next to my skin am I weird??

It has to be blazing sunshine for me to line dry. I can't bear the faff of putting it out and an hour later getting it in because it's raining.

One load a week though?! I take it you don't wash your bedding and towels very often?

whatever5 · 18/07/2014 08:13

I'm really surprised at how many people would use the tumble dryer on a sunny day. I can understand if they don't have any outside space or have hayfever but otherwise it seems so environmentally unfriendly to use the tumble dryer when you don't have to.

Bunbaker · 18/07/2014 08:14

Exactly whatever5 I don't get it either, although I do give my towels a tumble dry because they are like sandpaper if I don't. I much prefer to line dry bedding.

CelticPromise · 18/07/2014 08:30

I don't have a dryer. If I haven't needed one in four years of reusable nappies I won't need one. May crack and get a heated airer for winter though, I believe they are greener.

I can't believe some people don't like the smell of washing dried in the fresh air! It's one of my favorite smells. I don't use fabric conditioner, and very rarely iron.

mawinter · 18/07/2014 08:35

I love the smell of line dried clothing, but hate the feeling of line dried towels or jeans. So no, you are not being unreasonable.

Noneedtoworryatall · 18/07/2014 09:17

Yabu if the weather is good.

Actually, yabu even if it's not great. You could always use an airer indoors.

Tumble dryers are just lazy IMO.

merrymouse · 18/07/2014 09:21

The strange thing about preferring the smell of comfort to line dried clothes is that the different types are called things like blue skies, sunshiny days, and lavender bloom - presumably to evoke white sheets blowing in the wind under blue skies on a sunshiny day in the garden.

Ilovenicesoap · 18/07/2014 09:58

Twee
I cant help it !Blush
I don't know what it is but it has always made me feel nauseous.

I live in the countryside so plenty of clean fresh air but the smell of washing dried outside is awful- sort of raw ifyswim ? Confused
I dont like the smell of fabric conditioners either but love the smell of washing powder - clean and soapy.

murphys · 18/07/2014 09:58

Although the heat from the sun helps, its it actually the moving air (wind) that dries clothes on the line. So the sun doesn't have to be out for it to dry on the line.

PetulaGordino · 18/07/2014 10:09

I love my towels as sandpapery as possible, so no fabric conditioner and line drying as much as possible. I want to feel like I'm in some spartan health farm in the 1930s

I love hanging my washing on the line to dry, I don't own a tumble drier anyway, it seems such a waste of energy and money to me.

How do you get away with 1 load of washing a week? Its that just clothes? Don't you wash your towels and bedclothes then? Confused

SooticaTheWitchesCat · 18/07/2014 11:25

Oh, and I have never had crispy clothes, I'm not sure how that would happen...

BlueThursday · 18/07/2014 15:57

Sometimes I just stand and admire my washing out on the line Blush

However, with DC1 due January we will have to invest in a drier for the winter months. No intentions of having it on all year though

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 18/07/2014 16:39

I love watching it all sway in the breeze too, find it really relaxing. We have a tumble drier for winter, we haven't got floor space for an airer since the DCs were born and when we did everything tended to get a bit musty, also our garden is sheltered and in deep shade all winter so stuff just doesn't get dry on the line but it's line drying all the way in summer.

Chixie · 18/07/2014 16:44

Only thing I hate about line drying is the fecking earwigs.

RonSwansonsLushMoustache · 18/07/2014 16:47

I dislike tumble dried clothes. So much so that we got rid of our tumble drier because we never used it and found some mice nesting in it one day.

I prefer crispy, line-dried towels, and stiff line-dried jeans. I hate the way tshirts twist in a drier, and everything ends up a size smaller.

gwanma · 18/07/2014 19:48

We had a drying rack in the scullery when I was growing up in the and we still talk about the time my grandpa went to the paper shop with a pair of knickers on his head that he had caught hanging off the rack. Btw I can't have a drier because my builder built the wall in the wrong place when he did our extension but I do love line drying. Our house is a bit like a laundry when it rains tho. Note to self "Must be careful with knickers".

Sallystyle · 18/07/2014 20:01

I do 1-2 loads a day and I always use the tumble.

My washing line broke and we never got round to replacing it and I am too lazy to go out twice a day to hang things on the line.

FrancesNiadova · 18/07/2014 20:09

I love line drying mine!

PrimalLass · 18/07/2014 20:09

Nothing dries in my garden. It is shit.

My tumble dryer is brilliant.

Rainbunny · 19/07/2014 17:50

I don't have a place to line dry but I like tumble drying anyway as I detest ironing. I probably break out the iron twice a year :)

Vingtdeux22 · 19/07/2014 17:54

I agree about the feel of line dried towels plus soot building up on line down here at least.

Almostfifty · 19/07/2014 17:59

I put out a wash yesterday. I brought it in an hour later bone dry. Nothing needed ironing, and it all smelled beautifully fresh.

I love the sight of a line of shirts all blowing in the breeze. I am so very sad.
