To wonder why MNHQ still haven't given us our Chalet School topic?

Because we probably shouldn't still be hanging out in AIBU, four (or is it five?) threads later.

I've been reading all the lovely transcripts, and although I started Prefects yesterday, I don't want to finish it, because it's the last one! :-(

Sorry, you beat me to it, I was v v frustrated Blush

Stratter5 · 12/07/2014 22:00

Really sorry. Thought I was being ignored. Blush

mummytime · 12/07/2014 22:01

The Katy books were about 100 years nearly before the Chalet school. I find it amazing how much more education and freedom girls in the US of the right class had.

I found the name tapes and giving up a career grating too. Especially in the early 60s.

I found Beth Chester becoming a nursemaid/mother's help instead of a gardener sad too.

NellWilsonsWhiteHair · 12/07/2014 22:01

Heh. S'ok. Sorry I got arsey back. Blush

Stratter5 · 12/07/2014 22:03

Not half as arsey as I was. Really bad of me, terribly sorry :(

JoeyMaynardsghost · 12/07/2014 22:03

Nell I fear it is much needed.

stratters I can see that you will have been sent a message. No need for rudeness! Can understand your impatience however but you gain a lot more through honey than vinegar. Grin

JoeyMaynardsghost · 12/07/2014 22:08

Yes, Nell I do think some of it was wishful thinking on EBD's part.
I used to do the same, then I am at home but working, and it's busier than being out at work. Barely any time to read! But I makes time.

RobinHumphries · 12/07/2014 22:08

There's actually 5 I think in the Katy Did series. The 4th is Clover I think and I can't remember the last.

Question: did they have lessons on Saturdays, if not how did they entertain themselves apart from writing lessons home, mending and evening entertainments?

Trills · 12/07/2014 22:10

In The High Valley

RobinHumphries · 12/07/2014 22:10

Thank you Trills

Stratter5 · 12/07/2014 22:14

I know Blush

I'll partner Thekla on tomorrow's walk. :(

Trills · 12/07/2014 22:17

I came on to make a pointed comment about topics, now I'm here talking about What Katy Did even though I've not read any Chalet School... :o

Shame the books are not old enough to be out of copyright

Vintagejazz · 12/07/2014 22:17

I'm a luddite and even though I started this series of threads haven't had a clue about downloading transcripsts. How does this work? I don't even have broadband just some kind of gadget my sis set me up with so I could access internet from home.
Anyway, glad to see the Chalet School threads continue. Loving these threads. Becoming my 'Happy Place'.

Tinuviel · 12/07/2014 22:18

Re the Katy books, there's also a short story about Johnnie in a book called 'Nine Little Goslings' which is a collection of short stories.

Do I need to bring anything to the midnight feast on the roof?

Tinuviel · 12/07/2014 22:20

Didn't they either go for a brisk walk or have an extra session of hobbies club? I bet they didn't lounge around in an unladylike fashion in the common room which is what I would have done!

libertytrainers · 12/07/2014 22:22

oh god do you lot not think it's better to remember things how you remember them at the time? nostalgia is best left in the past ;)

Stratter5 · 12/07/2014 22:26

Gosh no, I have all the CS books, and the associated ones. I treasure them, and am keeping them for my grandchildren. My philistine daughters weren't interested :(

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 12/07/2014 22:33

Gruss Gott from France - ah, la belle France, said Simone sentimentally, before she got all that trAining which helped her control herself...

To answer the OP, have we actually asked for a topic, or just sighed for it in the depth of a thread? Volunteers for a deputation? (not me for a week or WI, wifi is well dodgy here...)

MsAnnersley · 12/07/2014 22:40

Gals. Glad to see we've all regrouped. BUT, that business in the Summerhouse has not been forgotten.

you will all be hemming sheets every Saturday until October!

DeWee · 12/07/2014 22:44

Can I bring my sewing machine to hem sheets?

Tinuviel · 12/07/2014 22:49

Why don't the CS just buy sheets like normal people? I'll darn socks, if you like. I have a mushroom and everything!

Vintagejazz · 12/07/2014 22:57

Don't know why we're being picked on.

It's all Joan Baker's fault.

RueDeWakening · 12/07/2014 23:16

Julie Lucy was the one planning on being a barrister I think, Joey, was it her?

I've got as far as Lavender on the transcripts now - but my goodness, isn't that accent in Highland Twins something else? It's the outside of enough, in fact. Also, I note the slacking off for the end of term tradition was already going strong in fictional schools as they had a week off lessons to rehearse the nativity play. Perhaps that's where DD's school got the idea from... Hmm

Robin - they didn't have lessons on Saturdays (I'm sure the doctors from the San would never allow it!). Guides was on Saturday mornings in Tirol and Wales, although they didn't bother with Guides in the Oberland. Too much skiing, I expect. Then I imagine they went for healthy walks and over to the Kron Prinz Karl to watch the Tzigane or similar.

Vintagejazz · 12/07/2014 23:21

Okay, But it's STiLL Joan Baker's fault. She's a bad influence .

NellWilsonsWhiteHair · 12/07/2014 23:24

Shock "Gals"?
Miss Annersley would surely never ever ever say gals !

I am going to be so rubbish at hemming sheets. :( I deform my nature by being rubbish at all domesticity. I am not a true Chalet girl. Tell you what though, the summerhouse was well worth it.

I love Simone's sentimentality btw - I love that it's not properly knocked out of her. (I also kind of think EBD protested a bit too much about her own unsentimentality.) In the same vein, I like that Joan's commonness isn't properly extinguished either.

Also, on the subject of La Belle France lucky Lonny Envy in Mrs Jarley, Mdlle is dressed as 'La France'. Wtf does this mean?

Vintage, just to make sure, are you still in need of transcript access details? This seems unthinkable and yet reading your post, also seems a distinct possibility!
