to think that 'modesty shorts' are going to lead to trouble

A hypothetical young woman isn't wearing any under a shortish skirt. She goes out and is sexually assaulted. The defense know this. She is then considered to have 'asked for it' just as women used to be (I hope it is used to be) because she chose to be 'provocative' by not wearing the modesty shorts that have become a standard item for females wearing dresses and skirts.

I have a son so I was quite surprised when I heard of modesty shorts. apart from in school I can't see much of a reason for girls to wear them really.

lumieres i would be complaining loudly to the school and I would have no problems telling my child that sometimes teachers get things wrong and on this occasion they were wrong!

Actually, when we wore navy knickers in school, we still worried that people (in this case, other girls or female PE teachers) would be able tell if we had a sanitary towel in situ... So it didn't solve that problem. This was with a teeny tiny games skirt, which was more the problem, in my opinion.

Tampons may be the way to go, but not everyone will like them, or want to start using them when first menstruating.

DD wears shorts under her (secondary) skirt because she'd far rather be wearing shorts anyway.

The skirt is just a sort of nod to the school uniform code, really.

ChunkyPickle · 08/07/2014 12:22

So if you're wearing modesty shorts (WTF) do you have to wear the skirt at all then since they presumably cover everything that people feel should be covered?

Because perhaps we've found a solution to those sexist school uniform policies.

KittiesInsane · 08/07/2014 13:01

Well, in our case, no one at secondary is allowed shorts except, it would seem, under a far too short-- skirt.

Unfair on the boys, frankly, who look sweltering.

MrsCakesPremonition · 08/07/2014 13:30

Or maybe wear short-shape pants and ditch the double layering.

Once you have schools insisting that girls wear short under dresses, you also have schools implementing pant inspections to ensure that the girls are obeying the rule (as used to happen with girls and their navy school pants). So you have girls lined up, showing their pants/shorts to a teacher which is a weird message and rather humiliating. While the boys get to keep their pants/shorts private while the girls privacy is actually reduced.

Girls should not have to be made to wear dresses and skirts to school.
