to have allowed DD out in public with the risk of flashing her nappy

DD is 17 months old. I dropped her off at my inlaws today wearing a sundress and sandals as it is 23 degrees here. She returned home wearing a sundress, sandals and frilly knickers so big am sure I could squeeze into them. According to my MIL my omission was equivalent to sending her out in her pyjamas Shock Have I just commuted a major parenting faux pas?

Yanbu. I dress my DD the same. But mymother has a thing about under garments, and thinks nappies should be covered.

Because heaven forbid anyone knows my toddler is wearing one!

17leftfeet · 01/07/2014 17:55

My mil used to only buy outfits for dd that had matching pants

Strangely they often got lost

NeedsAsockamnesty · 01/07/2014 17:57

YANBU they have issues

abigboydidit · 01/07/2014 17:58

How on earth did I not even realise such an item existed!! I do have one little dress with matching pants which isn't for everyday wear so I assumed it was a special occasions type of thing. Oh dear...

MIL was OBSESSED with frilly knickers from the moment she knew we were having a girl. As far as she is concerned, putting frilly knickers on a baby girl is compulsory and at the top of the priority list... Hmm

abigboydidit · 01/07/2014 17:59

Yes, mine seems to have paid more attention to that than to the sun cream today Hmm

YABU - frilly knickers are wonderful garments, what sort of mother are you, sending your daughter anywhere without underwear on over her nappy....

Do you go everywhere commando when it's hot ? GrinGrinGrin

crazykat · 01/07/2014 18:01

I never put the pants on my DDs. Its a nappy not a bare bum. I was given some frilly pants for dd1, they had loads of lace and feather ribbon across the back and made her bum look huge, it looked she had a pillow stuffed in her nappy. They were worn once for a photo and then mysteriously went missing.

STOPwiththehahaheheloling · 01/07/2014 18:03

I thought frilly knickers died out in the 80's Confused didnt realise you could still get them. Or is this a 'vintage' line for babies? Hmm

abigboydidit · 01/07/2014 18:06

They are giant! They make her dress ride up because of the friction Shock

Yanbu. But then I do take my 18 month old out in pyjamas sometimes ( when we go swimming I can't be doing with getting him dressed then undressed then dressed again so he just stays in his babygrow until we go swimming, also some of his pyjama tops are lovely, he wears those as day wear).

Next time I'd send her in just frilly knickers,

Awww...I love frilly pants....it's so sad that toddler dresses aren't sold with frilly pants these days!

When DD was little, GAP did plain pants, which kept me placated.

And Grandparents I know just don't seem to understand that sun cream is necessary. As my mother says "The sun must be different these days."

minipie · 01/07/2014 18:09

Ha - I used to think knickers over nappy was a nice idea, until I had to wrestle with DD during every nappy change! Now it's a case of "fewer clothing items to get off and on again the better"

TheDetective · 01/07/2014 18:09

No. That's weird. Your MI that is.. Frilly knickers?! Wtf!

Just don't ever put any on and she might get the message that you think it's silly.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 01/07/2014 18:10

TBF disposable nappies do look pretty crappy - but if you are using reusable - no need to cover those up....

AWombWithoutARoof · 01/07/2014 18:12

Does your MIL also love those ankle socks with massive frills that make babies' feet look like Shire horse hooves? Grin

MrsCakesPremonition · 01/07/2014 18:12

Frilly pants are delightful until they end up indelibly stained with curry coloured poo marks round the leg holes.

OpiesOldLady · 01/07/2014 18:13

I let my toddler daughter go out in a nappy and a t-shirt.

Now, before you hoike those pants of judgyness, they are cloth nappies, beautiful colours and patterns and deserve to be shown off Grin

ButtonBoo · 01/07/2014 18:13

DD always had an age 2-3 pair of pants (some a tad frilly!) over her nappy. She's 2 1/2 now and potty trained so not an issue. But I put them on her after we were at the park and a little girl had a dress on was going up the steps on the slide and I got a good ol glimpse of a poo filled nappy. Just made me boak a little bit. At least the pants cover that up. The poo around the edge ses of the nappy. IMO.

MrsMook · 01/07/2014 18:15

DS2 often goes out on a warm day in tshirt and funky reusable nappy. Nothing wrong with a nappy on show, but disposables aren't a stylish look.

alemci · 01/07/2014 18:16

I would sometimes put my dds in leggings or those lacey bloomers/pants which I would make.

sleeplessinderbyshire · 01/07/2014 18:16

Nursery took me to one side when DD1 was about 9 months old to say that it wasn't acceptable to send her in a dress with a nappy without knickers. Admittedly this was in part because she was a bottom shuffler and her disposable nappies were getting shredded on the decking outside but with DD2 who is 23 months they get all upset even with a pretty patterned washable nappy on if there are no leggings/pants to hide the nappy

Purpleroxy · 01/07/2014 18:16

I used to cover my dd's nappy as I found the nappy can get scuffed and the surface starts having hairy plastic type bits hanging/coming off. I'd send her in shorts and shirt next time and avoid the problem.
