to have allowed DD out in public with the risk of flashing her nappy

DD is 17 months old. I dropped her off at my inlaws today wearing a sundress and sandals as it is 23 degrees here. She returned home wearing a sundress, sandals and frilly knickers so big am sure I could squeeze into them. According to my MIL my omission was equivalent to sending her out in her pyjamas Shock Have I just commuted a major parenting faux pas?

Yanbu.

I used to let dd wear summer dresses with just a nappy. It is surely hotter with knickers on top?

I have loads of unworn pairs of knickers that matched dresses unworn in boxes that with be of no use whatsoever to baby ds if anyone wants them - your mil perhaps?

Only problem is if the nappy falls down with nothing to help it stay up but that seemed to stop happening after baby stage.

Mim78 · 01/07/2014 21:32

Ps my mil once bought dd pyjamas to wear as a summer outfit (shorts and t shirt kind but obviously pyjamas). Don't know what your mil would make of that!

CaffeinatedKitten · 01/07/2014 21:35

I had a few pairs of nappy covers as my eldest was a fan of shredding her nappy as she shuffled over the floor. Then we discovered cotton dungarees and never looked back:o

abigboydidit · 01/07/2014 21:40

If they wear tights, are you meant to put the pants over the nappy and tights too? Or are tights showing okay?

Yabu I'm afraid but it is personal choice. I prefer knickers over nappies with a dress, the same as I wouldn't treat a nappy like a pair of shorts with a t shirt. It's only for aesthetics but I do think it looks a bit lazy if I see a DD able to toddle, crawl and bend and you keep getting an eyeful of saggy nappy.

ChrisMooseAlbanians · 01/07/2014 21:48

Blimey, I'm definately common then! 20mo DD is of the opinion that clothes are for losers at the moment.... I have never even thought about putting knickers over a nappy. Its a nappy FGS! I havent got time to be battling with a pair of knickers on...! its hard enough trying to get the blasted nappy on

nooka · 01/07/2014 21:58

Soggy/poo-ie nappies should be taken off surely? Not covered up with lace. Love the idea that a 17month old would feel 'spoiled' by being put into nappy covering pants!

FreeButtonBee · 01/07/2014 21:58

I never get to put them on my poor old dd as she has horrible excema so has to be covered from neck to ankle at all times

I think the plain cotton or broderie anglaise ones are pretty cute but in no way compulsory. I don't find nappies offensive although the leaking poo round the edges look is to be avoided...

stealthsquiggle · 01/07/2014 21:59

I did generally put (cotton) knickers over nappies under dresses for for DD at that sort of age -mostly because we had them, as lots of her summer clothes came from the US, where such things appear to be compulsory. They do look nicer than disposable nappies, though. She also had some really cute playsuits which had the added advantage that she couldn't hoick the dress over her head and get tangled up in it.

No frills round here, though.

nooka · 01/07/2014 22:00

Crawling dd's are better off not in dresses/skirts really.

MrsBigginsPieShop · 01/07/2014 22:03

Mind you I do freely admit to loving these for myself....

...so p'raps my taste isn't much to go by!!

Some of DD's cloth nappies cost £25. I show them off at any opportunity! Tots Bots Pooper Hero and Royal Flush prints look fantastic OTB. BG Audrey print is just so cute!

OP, get some Blueberry wraps for going to MIL's - way cuter than frilly pants Grin

DanaBarrett · 02/07/2014 11:35

DD1 wore disposables, and by the time summer came, she was toddling and I really didn't like how they looked under her dresses so I got some frillies. DD2 wears cloth and I much prefer the look of the prints (and plain colours) on her bum :).

My mum suggested frillies tbh, she used to put them over the old-style rubber pants in the summer with us.

Idontseeanyicegiants · 02/07/2014 11:39

It's much easier for them to go down the slide with shorts on under a sun dress. Discovered that one this morning, less friction on toddler thighs Grin

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 02/07/2014 11:54

Yet something else that MN has informed me I've been doing wrong! Grin

If we are going to the park, Tumble Tots, playgroup etc. then I do generally put a pair of shorts on under DD's dress (in the summer, tights in the winter). Other than that though, it would just be a dress & a nappy.

I never realised it was wrong to be able to see a toddler's nappy Confused.

My eldest DCs are boys, so the issue didn't arise - I obviously haven't given the whole issue of wearing a dress enough thought, etiquette wise Grin.

HibiscusIsland · 02/07/2014 12:11

Or the people who do put knickers on over a nappy have been informed by MN they are going it wrong, depending on who on the thread you listen to. It's been about equal really.

Mrsjayy · 02/07/2014 12:12

Does toddlers not wear popper vests anymore I put them on of they had a dress on just to keep the nappy in tact they played with the stick strips other wisr

minipie · 02/07/2014 12:32

I would usually put a vest on underneath dresses mrsjayy but if it's really hot I wouldn't.

TheBookofRuth · 02/07/2014 12:42

At 2.5 I can't get popper vests to fit DD, she has a long torso and the biggest size is still too short. And I wouldn't put them on her if it's hot anyway. I am completely ok with the occasional flash of nappy.

Mrsjayy · 02/07/2014 15:13

suppose thick vest summer you are right

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 02/07/2014 15:27

MrsJay, yes, my DD wore popper vests on most occasions until this year, when we've run out of short-sleeved ones in her size (she's 2.4) and I don't want to buy more because we're dickering with the idea of potty training so they might not get much wear. This summer she's been going to nursery in a dress and leggings, but that's only because the first few times I sent her in just a dress she came home with v grazed knees! Nothing to do with nappy aesthetics!

I have noticed the difficulty with slides when she has only the nappy on, though. Not sure pants are the answer - more inclined to dress her in shorts and a T-shirt.

AllHailTheBigPurpleOne · 02/07/2014 15:39

Dd was running about the park on JUST a nappy and sunhat today.
I shall report myself to the firing squad at dawn

Boaby · 02/07/2014 15:43

My cousin wore big frilly pants under her knee length first communion dress, she looked like she was wearing a Victorian bustle and made the dress very short at the back. Not good when they all had to kneel facing the alter with their backs to the congregation.

airplanesandsun · 02/07/2014 15:47

OMG she is not even two - put her what ever is coolest!
Sleep - with nursery its because they leak more if not held into place by leggings etc A lot of nurseries discourage dresses full stop as less practical
