to have allowed DD out in public with the risk of flashing her nappy

DD is 17 months old. I dropped her off at my inlaws today wearing a sundress and sandals as it is 23 degrees here. She returned home wearing a sundress, sandals and frilly knickers so big am sure I could squeeze into them. According to my MIL my omission was equivalent to sending her out in her pyjamas Shock Have I just commuted a major parenting faux pas?

Frilly knickers look daft but normal toddler size ones help prevent nappy sag and look nice. Much neater than just the nappy.

TheRealAmandaClarke · 01/07/2014 19:25

I love frilly knockers over a nappy.
Just saying.

Mumof3xox · 01/07/2014 19:25

I hold my hands up my 15 month old dd has frilly knickers!

Partly because I think they are cute, but also because they stop her opening her nappy

TheRealAmandaClarke · 01/07/2014 19:26

Best is when you have a vest on, you know, the ones with the poppers. Then their tummy looks comfy too.
But it gets too hot for that in summer.

TheRealAmandaClarke · 01/07/2014 19:28

Haven't bought dd any since she was about 5 mo.

MummyKnight · 01/07/2014 19:32

I always put frilly knickers on over my DD's nappy if she is wearing a dress or skirt and no tights. I just think it looks nicer than a nappy. I buy them from either Tesco or Asda.

TalcumPowder · 01/07/2014 20:07

I'm hysterical at the bare idea that an uncovered toddler nappy looks 'common'! I hear it in a Hyacinth Bucket style voice...

PickleSarnie · 01/07/2014 20:11

How about a pair of these to keep the MIL happy?Boris Bottom....David Derriere?

glenthebattleostrich · 01/07/2014 20:14

She would've loved dd. At that age she figured out how to undo her nappy and often ran around with her skirt pulled up shouting look me bum! Legging were soon purchased.

pianodoodle · 01/07/2014 20:16

I've never put pants on over DD's nappy. Didn't occur to me! I think there was one time when some came with a dress in a set, but that was it.

Too much faffing!

indigo18 · 01/07/2014 20:18

I like pants over nappies; they look neater and I hate the look of saggy disposable nappies. Since the bum is encased in plastic and padding, an extra layer of cotton makes no difference heat-wise!

fluffyraggies · 01/07/2014 20:24

If it's warm enough for no tights then it's too warm form for extra layers IMO. Also i think the leg elastic always looks like its going to rub.

SheWhoCannotBeShamed · 01/07/2014 20:34

Oh bless. When my dd2 was little I'd happily let her run around anywhere in just a nappy and lots of suncream. And occasionally a hat.

Seriously. There will be enough time to worry about what people think of whether her knickers are showing when she's a teenager...

abigboydidit · 01/07/2014 21:03

Oh dear. She is in disposables so maybe IABU. She was just playing in the garden so I hadn't thought about it. In fact the entire outfit was pretty scruffy for that reason! MIL went to some drapery shop on her wee village and bought the pants. Lots of them. Lots Hmm

OP posts:
TheRealAmandaClarke · 01/07/2014 21:06

That's lovely of her really.
IMHO, it's fine to just have the nappy, but the pants look smashing. How nice that mil could spoil her like that.

Parietal · 01/07/2014 21:07

ynbu

i never put knickers on over the nappy. what on earth is the point?

ElephantsNeverForgive · 01/07/2014 21:09

Dad's had some white Brodie anglaise (sp) go with everything knickers that went over ugly disposables for parties and things where photo's were likely to be taken.

Otherwise I never bothered and certainly no frills.

abigboydidit · 01/07/2014 21:09

I think the gesture would have been nicer without the lecture Hmm She kept going on about how disgraceful it was and asking what I had been thinking.

ElephantsNeverForgive · 01/07/2014 21:11

Oops, The idea of DH in white cotton lace knickers, does not need contemplating.

LittleprincessinGOLDrocks · 01/07/2014 21:14

We had the nappy cover knickers for DD, but only for special outfits. She had one to match her bridesmaid dress for our wedding too, but that was to avoid nappy shots in my wedding photos.
I think she had 3 pairs in total.
For every day wear we didn't bother.

Only1scoop · 01/07/2014 21:14

I also used to put cotton non frilly knickers on over a nappy when dd wore a little sundress. Looked so much nicer than just nappy I thought.

Frilly or lace though ugh no Confused

NoodleOodle · 01/07/2014 21:19

I prefer nappies covered but don't consider it anywhere near important enough to warrant much discussion, let alone a lecture or nagging.

TheRealAmandaClarke · 01/07/2014 21:25

Oh, I see.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 01/07/2014 21:26

I'm a bit meh at the idea of frilly pants covering up a pooey or soggy nappy. Just change the little blighters for goodness sake.

Thurlow · 01/07/2014 21:29

'Common' Grin

Your MIL would have a field day with DD. Skinny thing, all her leggings and trousers ride down LA gang style so she permanently has inches of nappy showing at her waist. I don't think even frilly knickers would solve that problem.

(To be fair, if it was a special occasion like a wedding I might put cotton knickers under a dress)
