to have allowed DD out in public with the risk of flashing her nappy

DD is 17 months old. I dropped her off at my inlaws today wearing a sundress and sandals as it is 23 degrees here. She returned home wearing a sundress, sandals and frilly knickers so big am sure I could squeeze into them. According to my MIL my omission was equivalent to sending her out in her pyjamas Shock Have I just commuted a major parenting faux pas?

I remember wearing frilly knickers and the feel of the stitching across the buttocks.

alemci · 01/07/2014 18:17

agree about the poo. I think I did cover nappy but it was a while back

KatieKaye · 01/07/2014 18:17

Hate frilly knickers over nappies . Looks so wierd and bulky. She's s baby do of course she's in nappies so why cover them up? IMO it's akin to sticking those silly ribbons on a bald baby head.

KEGirlOnFire · 01/07/2014 18:21

Buttonboo, I'm with you.

Either a vest that poppers up or pants over a nappy. Nothing worse than seeing a bulging nappy, pants keep it all looking neat!!

Some people have extremely charmed lives if the worst thing that could happen is seeing a bulging nappy Hmm

HibiscusIsland · 01/07/2014 18:23

I didn't bother most of the time but mothercare used to do some nice over nappy knickers about ten years ago which I'd use for a special occasion. Day to day I didn't bother.

BeyoncesCat · 01/07/2014 18:34

I always put nappy knickers on mine!! I'm not a mother in law though Grin

Minisoksmakehardwork · 01/07/2014 18:40

I love frilly knickers over nappies. But they get just as scruffy and dirty as a nappy is going to. Plus dd is a skinny mini and still in newborn over knickers. So I don't often remember to put them on as I've only a couple of pairs.

makeminea6x · 01/07/2014 18:45

Seems a bit hot and sweaty to me? Can you imagine having to wear it? Bad enough wearing a nappy when it's hot let alone another layer on top of that!

Niklepic · 01/07/2014 18:48

I put plain knickers over dd's nappy but that's only so that it doesn't brush her knees when it gets a little overfull when we're out.

Mrsjayy · 01/07/2014 18:53

Most of the dress outfits y dds had came with pants some were frilly they were nice anyway your mil is a loon to put them on her where did she het them

SaucyJack · 01/07/2014 18:55

I'm with your MIL. I think uncovered nappies look a bit common tbh.

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 01/07/2014 19:04

DS2 (1yo) is always in just a tshirt and nappy when it's warm, only a colourful cloth one though, if we're having to use pull ups or something, I always put wee shorts on, I just think the look of them spoils the outfit.

I'd go a bit Hmm if family decided to cover him up for me though.

DD's in cloth nappies- plain covers but I do make sure it coordinates with her outfit.

However, she has (non frilly) knickers over the top today as she's wearing a skirt and has recently worked out how to take her nappy off.

MrsCakesPremonition · 01/07/2014 19:12

Sounds like your MiL will have her in "modesty shorts" when she gets to school age.

CrohnicallyExhausted · 01/07/2014 19:13

X post with chunderella- no, you're not the only one!

FunkyBoldRibena · 01/07/2014 19:14

The sun must be different these days.

Yes, it is. Because of the lack of the oxone layer. Did they fall asleep during the 80s and 90s?

ILoveYouBaby · 01/07/2014 19:14

I love the frilly knickers look. And it's a useful tool in capturing poonamis.

lessthanBeau · 01/07/2014 19:16

I hate to see nappies under dresses, I just hate the nappy in general, although I do confess to frills on occaision, I mostly just had plain cotton pants over the top. I just think it looks unfinished somehow without them.

gointothewoods · 01/07/2014 19:18

I actually hate the look of disposable nappies under a dress/ skirt on a small child, but also hate those frilly knickers. Used to put DD in tops and short leggings, or put leggings under dress. Also useful for capturing/ hiding leaky bits. People gave me lots of gifts of dresses with matching pants, but was not a fan unless the dress was quite long so covered up most of the pant action. DD was (and is) very tall though, so dresses never really covered very much of her.

TheBookofRuth · 01/07/2014 19:20

Good Lord. I cannot imagine having so little to do when caring for a small child that I would willingly subject myself to more and unnecessary washing.

HillyHolbrook · 01/07/2014 19:21

Hang on, who's knickers were they?!Grin

Where did she get them?!

YANBU. I imagine a nappy must be uncomfy enough in hot weather, TMI but I find a sanitary pad bad enough, never mind wrapping one over my whole bum, then stuffing it into layers of lace!Hmm

ICanSeeTheSun · 01/07/2014 19:23

I used pants for DD when she was a baby in a dress. Nothing to do with her flashing a nappy but to keep explosive nappies in.

drspouse · 01/07/2014 19:24

We usually use pretty cloth nappies (or white, permanently stained cloth nappies as they are cheaper) and we are in process of adopting DD so I'm looking for dresses for her. As we aren't using the cloth nappies at the moment, and being a nappy snob, I have sourced some of the Gap type nappy covers to cover the disposables.

I won't be buying frilly pants though thanks very much.
