To think that Saville was NEVER a "Much loved family favourite"???

Sorry to start a thread about this sick, awful animal but they just said on Radio 4 that he was a much loved family favourite.

I CLEARLY remember watching him on Jim'l Fix It and thinking "Oh he's HORRIBLE!"

I hated him...he was frightening and I could see that some children were very scared of him on that show.

Did ANYONE actually enjoy his "performances" and appearances?? I don't think so.

I think the establishment kept him where he was...on TV and in positions of power because he knew too much about THEIR activities.

And it's funny how it all came out once he was dead and couldn't name anyone else.

I challenge anyone to think back and remember how much they "loved" him at the time before his activities were known.

I was born in the mid-70's and always, always found him creepy. I always found Rolf Harris pretty creepy, too.

Greyhound · 26/06/2014 16:49

Apart from Fix It, I'm struggling to remember what else he presented. Obviously, he was on the radio and was a regular presenter of TOTP. I do remember him presenting - oh, the terrible irony - a series about how to keep your children safe.

Fullpleatherjacket · 26/06/2014 16:49

I agree with the premise he was protected by what he knew about the powerful and I believe what he didn't know he made his business to find out.

I was a child of the 70's and was indifferent to him. I didn't think he looked scary or evil. I just didn't like the stupid vocals and have never liked twee shows with precocious kids.

I do find people who were in or who subsequently came to positions where they could have made noises about him and didn't pretty nauseating too.

Yes, Esther Rantzen. I do mean you.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 26/06/2014 16:52

MyFairyKing... I nodded at your post, it's entirely relevant on this thread. Some people do seem to be reframing history a little, possibly because it is very uncomfortable to sit with the reality.

The only difference between JS, Rolf Harris, Gary Glitter and any other notable figure, is their celebrity and the likelihood that they will be found out and held to account. It's a very much higher probability than it would be for Joe/Jane Bloggs.

limitedperiodonly · 26/06/2014 16:53

that is not what I got from the OP at all. Not even from the lines you quoted

tethersend I did and so I suppose we're going to have to do that thing about agreeing to disagree.

WallyBantersJunkBox · 26/06/2014 16:55

limited I'm not actually sure what I am looking at, I don't know the band on the clip, can you explain?

NigellasDealer · 26/06/2014 16:56

ooh fullpleather you said the rancid word - how brave.

does anyone else remember her vile mawkishness about childline or a certain disappeared child who was always 'little so and so? vom -vom - vom

WallyBantersJunkBox · 26/06/2014 16:56

Granny we have to be careful who we name on the threads.

GrannyOnTheSchoolRun · 26/06/2014 16:56

I'm just asking this question again because I haven't lived in the Uk since the mid 70's and I'm quite clueless about certain things: -

So if JS being mentioned in the TV clip is relevant to what we now know then what is the reference to Cliff Richard supposed to mean?

Smilesandpiles · 26/06/2014 16:57

Nigella, I won't read it all in one sitting. I'm on page 21 of that thread and I want to be sick, especially with the link to the recording. I physically can't read that thread in one go (apart from that it's way too long)

fatlazymummy · 26/06/2014 16:58

granny we can't talk about that person.

NigellasDealer · 26/06/2014 16:58

seemed quite pally to me

To think that Saville was NEVER a "Much loved family favourite"???
GrannyOnTheSchoolRun · 26/06/2014 16:59

Ok. Thank you :)

WallyBantersJunkBox · 26/06/2014 16:59

Granny please stop mentioning the names there could be a possibility that the thread will get pulled.. I'd suggest you google Elm Guest House and any relevant names if you want to update yourself.

Greyhound · 26/06/2014 16:59

Fullpleather My family are friends with E Rantzen (name drop). I wonder if she did know? I'm not convinced she did. I remember her talking about Saville and praising him for his charity work, hospital work etc.

She mentioned that she assumed he was gay but never suggested anything illegal or abusive was going on. Esther is a campaigner against child abuse, so I don't think she would have kept quiet, I really don't.

NigellasDealer · 26/06/2014 16:59

no smiles do not read all that thread at once it is too dark.
look after yourself ok?

I'm not reading it all at once.

fromparistoberlin73 · 26/06/2014 17:00

I wrote to him, thank fuck he never fixed it for me

but he was a family favourite- and noone thought was odd back then

wished he had just stuck with the necrophilia frankly

GrannyOnTheSchoolRun · 26/06/2014 17:01

Thank you Wally - I'll just assume people won't click on the link to the TV programme where the names were mentioned, and that no one will read all the other names mentioned.

NigellasDealer · 26/06/2014 17:01

Esther is a campaigner against child abuse
is she?

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 26/06/2014 17:01

Fullpleatherjacket - did ER know about JS? If she did, and said nothing, that is a huge betrayal, especially given her championing of Childline.

WallyBantersJunkBox · 26/06/2014 17:05

The other names are either examples of people seen as family favourites on TV where posters made it clear that they weren't connected to anything untoward just gave them a 70's creepy vibe, or people named as celebrities in the Yewtree investigation such as Stuart Hall.

The link to the video wouldn't be pulled up in a search engine related to that particular person, whereas typing a name would? There are lots of rumours which can be openly googled on the net, but as there hasn't been anything official (yet?) it's best to try and avoid actual names in discussions until charged or proven.

Hakluyt · 26/06/2014 17:05

It's always a huge relief when a paedophile or similar looks like a "weirdo"

People will do anything to avoid accepting the fact that children are at risk (insofar as they are at risk at all)from perfectly ordinary "normal" people that they know well. But that's far too scary and difficult to think about. So we go on about "stranger danger" and have frissons of horror about how we always knew there was something "not quite right" about Saville, then life carries on.

Tim Loughton tells Jeremy Hunt on #Savile reports: “This is the tip of the iceberg.”

Tom Watson asks Jeremy Hunt whether the official reports found any evidence that #Savile had political protection.
