To wonder why if pasta, rice, bread, noodles etc are so fattening and have no nutritional value, why we still eat them?

So nutritional advice seems to have changed a lot the last few years and it seems to be much more accepted that low carb is both a healthier and more effective way to eat. So why are we still eating the above products? They don't add anything except give energy. There is 0 nutritional value in these products, so, what's going on..?

I can only speak for me, but I eat them because I like them and they fill me up.

They make a great accompaniment for meat and fish for example.

Because they are cheap and filling.
When I've had almost bare cupboards and no money I make sure the dc have a nutritious balanced mealx then make.myself rice/pasta with whatever I have, rice and onion is delicious and filling.

They are not fattening. Billions eat rice as a main ingredient and are thin.

Because good bread is gorgeous covered in butter. And kids will eat pasta meals so they're easy to make for the family when you can't face fussiness

because on a limited budget pasta and rice are filling and versatile for little extra cost can be made into several diofferent dishes and not necessarilly fattening im a skinny so can eat as much as i want

Well energy is kind of important if you think about it. The best vitamin mix in the world won't keep you alive on its own.

Special fried rice is also nutritious and a great way to use up the meat on a Monday, that's left over from Sunday's roast.

Most people do not choose every single thing they eat purely on the basis of its nutritional value. Some people eat things because they like them Shock

Plus, as expat says, it's not as if they are the problem in isolation - there are other environmental and lifestyle factors.

The good nutritional advice in this country is that 40% of your calories should come from complex carbs like rice, pasta, potatoes, bread. It's only those with products to sell that want you to stop eating carbs.

Bread has got tons of nutrition in it, as well as being filling and delicious and full of fibre.

Take your low carb evangelism somewhere else :)

Carbs aren't fattening, carbs cause your body to store the fat in your food. I'm fed up with carbs being marketed as a 'bad' food. I lived off carbs for every meal for a week a few years ago, but very little fat (I was skint, think cereal for breakfast, potato wedges and veg for lunch, pasta and veg sauce for dinner, every day) I lost half a stone in a week!

Carbs aren't bad. Equally fat is needed for fat soluble vitamins. Too much of either is obviously bad, and cutting carbs out stops fat being stored. It's easier to cut out carbs than fat, and I think it's a lazy way to diet which has been held up as some sort of holy grail. Everything in moderation, there's no magic fix.

Isn't that a good enough reason Grin?

I would much rather eat half a loaf of delicious farmhouse bread with butter and cheese than a plate of grilled salmon and spinach. And I am intelligent enough to know that the salmon and spinach would be much, much better for me.

There's no such thing as fattening foods anyway.

They can only make you fat if you eat too much of them and take too little exercise.

cheaper, fill you up and good "servers" for normally more expensive food, sandwiches, wraps, jacket potatoes etc.

Eating 3 eggs and 2 avocados for breakfast, and nuts and berries and meat for every other meal and all the rest of that low carb malarkey is all very well if you have the money. For a huge number of people its simply an unaffordable way to eat.

Low carbing is not healthy.

Complications such as heart arrhythmias, cardiac contractile function impairment, sudden death, osteoporosis, kidney damage, increased cancer risk, impairment of physical activity and lipid abnormalities can all be linked to long-term restriction of carbohydrates in the diet.

Carbs are not the anti-Christ. It is a fad. Diets should be balanced, not exclude food groups. As Doctor says, energy is one of the main purposes of nutrition Confused

No nutritional value? Don't be daft.

My morning 2 slices of toast has 220kcal, 10.4g protein, 28g carbs, 5g fat, 11g fiber and 0.4g salt. Plus some more fat energy and protein in the penut butter that accompanies it.

Rice is just seeds, boiled up. I'm sure all nutritional advisors are keen to recommend people eat more seeds.

But then bread, pasta and noodles are just seeds ground up and mixed with water and eggs or yeast...
