To wonder why if pasta, rice, bread, noodles etc are so fattening and have no nutritional value, why we still eat them?

So nutritional advice seems to have changed a lot the last few years and it seems to be much more accepted that low carb is both a healthier and more effective way to eat. So why are we still eating the above products? They don't add anything except give energy. There is 0 nutritional value in these products, so, what's going on..?

""not the staple foods our various societies has thrived on for centuries!""

The white rice, pasta and wheat used in most breads (Spelt flour etc not included), isn't what we've eaten for centuries, or the same as what was traditionally eaten in the countries that the originated from. We have hybridised versions of the "traditional" grains once grown, as well as the traditional grains being rarely used and expensive (then there is the processing of the grains.

It is the white carbs that add little to our diets, but as said, they are filling and cheap.

Carbs also come from Veg sources, Swede, Sweet Potatoes, Squash, Beans, Peas etc and Corn (which my ancestors Native Americans made their bread etc from).

One of the issues is the constant availability of food, we not the staple foods our various societies has thrived on for centuries!don't go through "lean times", which naturally controlled our weight.

I comfort myself with the thought that my body, that stores fat ridiculously well, would have ensured my survival had I of lived in past times.

The reaserch from the Concentration camps (and other human experiments) shows that there are differences in the way our bodies use food and cling on to weight.

Has someone really just needed it stating that "veg dies contain protein?"

I thought that everyone would be well versed on the Myths we have been fed (no pun intended) around Protein.

The food industry, is just that, an industry, which employes cleaver marketers and advertisers (who both employ psychologists).

Is everyone really so obsessed with what you eat and what nutritional value everything has?

Don't you ever eat food just because you like it? Life would be pretty joyless if you analysed everything you ate. I don't know anyone in RL who does this except a few health food freaks but it seems the norm on Mumsnet. Grin.

If you want nutritional value go for seeded/multigrain bread and wholemeal pasta.

Trying to maintain a healthy weight while not eating carbs is extremely difficult if you are on any kind of budget. My body reacts oddly to pregnancy and I end up only able to eat fruit/veg/dairy/corn/potatoes until about 18 weeks. Until those 18 weeks hit and I can add rice, I'm constantly hungry, struggle to maintain the weight I was to start with, am dizzy a lot and tired. Add rice to the menu and I feel like a human being again! Rice/wheat and other grains also have complimentary proteins which match up with those in beans and between them, have the full range of amino acids. Very important for vegetarians.

Carbs aren't fattening. Sugar is fattening and has no nutritional value, but carbs are fine.

Anonynony · 11/06/2014 08:06

My kidney has been badly damaged as a result of low carb/ketogenic diets Sad

Waltonswatcher1 · 11/06/2014 08:19

I haven't trailed the thread .
Just wanted to say its not the carbs that are evil , its the type and amount people scoff that's wrong .
White versions are pure junk . Eat whole grain and watch how often .

KoalaDownUnder · 11/06/2014 08:19

That is completely untrue. Shock All foods have some nutritional value.

Carbs don't make you fat. Overconsumption makes you fat, and it's easier to overeat on carbs, particularly refined carbs, than on proteins. I lived in a remote part of Asia for a year and ate rice 3x a day, with very little protein. I've never been slimmer or felt better.

Rejecting all carbs is like throwing the baby out with the bathwater. Cut right down on low quality, highly-refined carbs like white bread, biscuits, pastry, breakfast cereal, cakes, white pasta, sugar. Substitute smaller amounts of seeded wholemeal bread, oats, brown rice.

Carbs are not the demon.

Accepted by whom?

Try putting your low carb theories to athletes. Ask them how they would perform without readily available stores of glycogen.
