To wonder why if pasta, rice, bread, noodles etc are so fattening and have no nutritional value, why we still eat them?

So nutritional advice seems to have changed a lot the last few years and it seems to be much more accepted that low carb is both a healthier and more effective way to eat. So why are we still eating the above products? They don't add anything except give energy. There is 0 nutritional value in these products, so, what's going on..?

because carbs aren't poison Grin

WorraLiberty · 10/06/2014 21:33

It's not just because they're cheap.

If I won the lottery tomorrow, I'd still eat all of those things.

I can't understand why anyone wouldn't, unless they genuinely didn't like them?

TheSarcasticFringehead · 10/06/2014 21:42

Because I love them, they are really filling and they give me energy.

Delphiniumsblue · 10/06/2014 21:49

They are part of a balanced diet. Much better to stick to that- and moderation in all things -than go with a fad, I have no doubt that low carb will be out as something else is 'in'.
If you have plenty of exercise you need energy giving foods.

fatlazymummy · 10/06/2014 21:51

They're fine , as long as we don't eat too much of them.
People seem to think that foods are either 'carbs' or 'proteins'. They're not (with a very few exceptions such as chicken breast). Most food contain protein, carbs and fat,in different proportions. Personally I'm going to carry on eating my wholemeal pitta, new potatoes, and small amounts of pasta and rice .

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 10/06/2014 21:56

Read Why we get fat and what to do about it by Gary Taubes. Crass title but a proper book Smile it explains how the weight is controlled by insulin and how insulin is influenced by carbs.

expatinscotland · 10/06/2014 21:58

We get fat by eating too many calories and not burning off enough.

cardibach · 10/06/2014 21:58

I'm going to continue to go with about a third of each meal carb, a third protein and a third veg. I know there is overlap between the food groups, but we all know what I mean by that. I genuinely believe (based on looking at the science - not in any detail, I'm not a nutritionist) that is the healthiest way to go. I haven't seen any explanation of why 'carbs' are bad which is actually plausible, I'm afraid.

Scarletohello · 10/06/2014 21:58

Drink could you say more about that book please?

YABU. Carbs are great!

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 10/06/2014 22:06

scarlett It dispels the myth that we get fat by eating too much and not burning enough off. It cites the researches(dates, publications, etc) proving fat does not make us fat but carbs do. He states that as our growth is limited by a growth hormone (no matter how much you eat you do not grow taller) and the same is with our weight, which is controlled by hormone insulin. It gets out if synch by our overeating of carbs.

I got my copy from the e-library (London Consortium) so worth checking if your library has it in print or as an e-copy. It certainly gives food for thought.

Bunbaker · 10/06/2014 22:06

Basically what everyone else has said on this thread.

Plus, we aren't all overweight. All skinnies in the bunbaker household - and we eat loads of carbs (and fresh vegetables and protein)

tobysmum77 · 10/06/2014 22:08

yabu no food group is good or bad. The key is proportions and portion sizes not what you eat.

Probably because they are cheap. Not everyone can afford expensive organic food, can they x

WorraLiberty · 10/06/2014 22:11

We get fat by eating too many calories and not burning off enough.

This ^^ really.

Carbs, fat, sugar, trans fats and Uncle Tom Cobbly and all doesn't make a scrap of difference to someone who actually doesn't eat too much and takes enough exercise.

Medical conditions aside of course.

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 10/06/2014 22:11

Yes, some people can eat anything and stay slim. But if you are overweight and you exercise and eat 'healthily' and still can shake the weight iff, I recommend reading it.

It happened to me suddenly, just one tine I put in weight very quickly and couldn't drop it off. I had used to winder at people not being able to lose weight by exercising and eating little. Then it happened to me. I train 4 times a week at the gymHmm and nothing I did made the scales drop. The book certainly made sense in my case.

Wondering whether I should have posted this on the low carb topics. I am pondering this as I've done low carb before and successfully lost a lot of weight, especially from my tummy ( am an apple shape) and since I am now contemplating doing it again, I'm aware how much Corby foods don't really add anything to a meal and are really just 'filler'. When I did low carb I had so much more energy, my skin was glowing and I was never hungry so for me it really worked. Guess it's horses for courses! Great bunfight ( without the buns ha ha )

They'd be eating too much healthy food then and not taking the correct amount of exercise.

Oakmaiden · 10/06/2014 22:19

Um - brown rice has loads of B vitamins and minerals.
