To be absolutely steaming about having a free copy of the Sun delivered by Royal Mail?

Sixweekstowait · 09/06/2014 09:10

I know I am not BU. I am going to post it back to Sun HQ in an unstamped envelope ( will probably tear it into pieces before I do). Who will join me?

My postman told me they are all very pissed off about having to do it - pissed off at The Sun and Royal Mail - some of them because they the hate The Sun and see it as Tory and others because of work load and taking much linger to do deliveries of something no one wants.

Nancy66 · 10/06/2014 12:19

plenty of people will want it or they wouldn't bother.

The people who read it will massively outnumber the people who don't.

Sirzy · 10/06/2014 12:27

Put it in shops for people who want it to pick it up then

ShakesBootyFlabWobbles · 10/06/2014 12:45

So why isn't it being delivered in Liverpool and Warrington MerryMarigold if there is no clear controversy? Its Hillsborough history aside, isn't Page 3 not also clearly controversial in a national newpaper that gives away family holiday tokens and free things for children in its promotions?

Its sells around 2.2 million copies per day plus its online readers. Even if it had 5million readers online, that still means the a large majority of the British public don't read it.

RedToothBrush · 10/06/2014 13:07

MerryMarigold Tue 10-Jun-14 11:08:32
I'm not trying to minimise the Sun's guilt, but just to say that it does not actually represent or embody the views it reported at the time. In fact it's retracted those views. Therefore it is not like BNP or anti abortion organisation who have very clear and controversial views.

Yes BUT there IS currently a public inquiry ongoing that is looking into what happened. Something that was obstructed because of the authorities and the influence of public opinion that was biased against Liverpool fans. Something that The Sun was instrumental in leading and encouraging.

TBH, in some respect, if the inquiry wasn't still on going I think your comments would hold more weight. But the problem here is that The Sun is buying public influence and support with this marketing stunt associating its self as a 'good guy' in the world of football coverage. Probably to distract from its wrong doings of the past, so everyone forgets just how immoral its coverage has been.

Thats why it is just so sensitive to me. It has implications for potentially influencing public opinion and its responses to the conclusions that the public enquiry may draw. At worst, it may influence the public enquiry itself. Its wrong. Now is the time that those voices who have admitted their wrongdoing has created a massive injustice, shut up and let those people tell their story without trying to influence it or the public in any way.

A couple of years down the line, then yes, maybe there would be less of an argument about the subject, but right now? No. Just no.

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 10/06/2014 13:15

Very well worded red. The fact that this is a marketing stunt related to football, when the most controversial event in their history was related to football, leaves a very bad taste. The fact that they are not sending to Liverpool shows that they know this, yet are doing it anyway.

2.2 million copies sold? I wonder how many are businesses who buy it as "THE British tabloid". I know one person who buys it. Otoh, three companies I work for used to buy it for reception/the restaurant.

SelectAUserName · 10/06/2014 13:17

Well said Red. Agree 100%.

LogicalPreference · 10/06/2014 13:20

I think the energy you put into this hatred could be used for something better.

Nothing can change what happened or what was said. Moving forward and using the hatred for something positive is a better use of your time.

RedToothBrush · 10/06/2014 13:27

Its not about Hate for me. I can simply understand why its very insensitive and why the time is very inappropriate.

ShakesBootyFlabWobbles · 10/06/2014 13:28

Hmm maybe The haters could campaign against page 3 then logical

As Red states above, Hillsborough inquests are taking place now. I'm sure the affected people would have wanted nothing more than to move forward but they've been denied this for 25 years. Thank goodness those people have had the strength to carry on and vindicate the 96 and the survivors.

Sirzy · 10/06/2014 13:31

Nothing can change what happened or what was said

but it can be made easier for them. 6 members of staff from the skelmersdale sorting office were at hilsbourgh. Given the history its pretty insensitive to attempt to make them deliver it.

Imagine the impact on those involved to find the paper through the letter box?

LogicalPreference · 10/06/2014 13:40

I'm not telling the victims to move on and telling certain people this thread that if they have such a major issue with The Sun then use that hateful energy and turn it into something more positive.

I said you can't change what's happened and sometimes it's extremely pointless dragging up what's happened in the past.

I'm not a supporter of The Sun and neither do I condone what was said but my goodness the amount of hate on here can be used for something better.

SelectAUserName · 10/06/2014 13:49

Who's to say we're not already also doing "something positive"?

LogicalPreference · 10/06/2014 13:58

What are you doing that's positive Select?

Genuinely interested.

RedToothBrush · 10/06/2014 14:10

Is it not positive to encourage voices that were not heard and indeed actively silenced to have their day in court and see their justice?

There is an ongoing debate within the UK at the moment about 'the elite' and those who are unable to participate or are otherwise excluded from democracy.

Each 'little' battle like this isn't necessarily 'unimportant' or 'petty'. They represent a small part of a bigger picture.

Often it is easier to pick your battles and win small victories in order to make a point and progress the wider agenda as part of that. Bigger issues are harder to tackle for various reasons. The old adage of eating the elephant bit by bit is very true.

Thats why this particular issue is NOT just about the past. It is also about the present and voices being allowed to be heard without prejudice. Because this represents how things in the past have been acknowledged to be wrong and a measure of how we have progressed.

SelectAUserName · 10/06/2014 14:11

I have:

  1. raised funds for the Hillsborough Family Support Group
  2. (previously) written to my MP requesting a further public inquiry and second inquest
  3. worked with the Football Supporters' Federation on issues of ground safety, including attending the last few Supporters' Summits.
RedToothBrush · 10/06/2014 14:15

So that would be having success in active community work and active local democracy then Select...?

SelectAUserName · 10/06/2014 14:22

Exactly, Red.

ShakesBootyFlabWobbles · 10/06/2014 14:26

How do you know 'certain people' on this thread aren't Hillsborough victims, survivors, families, friends? you haven't asked. If they don't want the sun through their doors they shouldn't have to. If they come on MN to agree that OP INBU they shouldn't have to endure the so what/drama llama/dragging up the past/whatever sentiments of people who choose not to understand.
I'm sick of raising this point. Put your papers in the bin or read them, that's up to you. Just stop having a go at people who have solid reasons for being upset by an unwanted mailshot.

ShakesBootyFlabWobbles · 10/06/2014 14:33

select I applaud you.

SelectAUserName · 10/06/2014 14:43

Thank you Shakes, but it's no more than thousands of other people have done/are doing.

I resent the implication that if you express a strong opinion on a subject about which you feel passionately, you must be just another keyboard warrior. Posting on t'internet and doing stuff in the Real World aren't mutually exclusive.

Darkesteyes · 10/06/2014 14:57

These e mails they are sending out saying you may miss out on other gov communication if you don't accept this delivery sound a bit sinister to me.

Superchop · 10/06/2014 14:57

I don't want the sun through my door, for reasons previously stated. I think it's a cheek as the postal workers (including dp) have to deliver these and do not get paid extra. Imagine lugging round that many papers on top letters and parcels, it's ridiculous.

I have only read up to page 6 of this thread but wanted to say you can all opt out of leaflets and newspapers. This is from citizens advice :

The Royal Mail Door to Door service delivers unaddressed mail, usually marketing material such as leaflets or brochures, on behalf of companies and organisations.

You can reduce the amount of 'unaddressed’ mail you receive by registering with the Royal Mail's door to door opt-out service. However, this will not stop mail addressed to 'the occupier'.

My dp told me they give you an official sticker which goes on your letter box and also on the sorting frame so they won't be given to you at any stage. :) unfortunately written notices aren't enough, you may still get the sun through your door.

RedToothBrush · 10/06/2014 15:02

I don't think that you should knock 'keyboard warriors' tbh. Actually you can achieve quite a bit by being a keyboard warrior if you target it right.

Plus discussing ideas and views is a very democratic and very healthy thing to do as it engages people and gets them to form opinions that they might otherwise not have had. Its a great counter to established forms of media which often have the same purpose - to directly influence us and form our political views.

Isn't that MNs very strength? And why they now feature on power lists?

Saying, 'just another keyboard warrior' is a very good put down aimed at silencing views and encouraging conformity and lack of debate.

SelectAUserName · 10/06/2014 15:12

Sorry Red, I should have put "just another keyboard warrior" in quotes - I absolutely agree with everything you say (which is why I'm hammering away on here as well as doing all the RL stuff Grin ) - I meant it to represent the dismissive, sniffy attitude that is so often aimed at us KWs, rather than it being something I believe myself.
