To wonder why on earth Glenn Hoddle has got a job as a pundit for the World Cup when he has never apologised for his disablist comments?

So time is a healer then?

Effectively, ITV are endorsing his behaviour. For anyone who doesn't know, I quote:

"You and I have been physically given two hands and two legs and half-decent brains,"

"Some people have not been born like that for a reason. The karma is working from another lifetime.

"I have nothing to hide about that. It is not only people with disabilities. What you sow, you have to reap."

So disabled people are disabled, because they were very naughty boys and girls in their previous lives. He has never apologised, and has only said he was sorry that people felt offended, and that was never his intention.

What the actual fuck?! Of all the knowledgable football personalities out there, they chose him? Wow. If only all workplaces were as understanding, by that reasoning, you could intimidate someone and it would be all totally fine after a little bit of time because 'it's only your religious beliefs...'

AIBU to think ITV could have chosen a better television role model than this?

The world of football is a corrupt one, through and through. YABU to expect anything else.

shakethetree · 04/06/2014 21:16

He's had 1000's of TV jobs since that 'incident'

YouAreCompletelyRight · 04/06/2014 21:17

YANBU, I don't think anyone will argue with that.

ziggiestardust · 04/06/2014 21:18

You know what AF? After Qatar, I'm not shocked.

I just wish more people would complain about this sort of stuff. This 'oh well, it WAS a long time ago' attitude is fuelling discrimination of all kinds.

I know shake, this is just the first time I've been hanging about on mumsnet for it! Grin

GeordieMama · 04/06/2014 21:24

YANBU, he's a prat.

AnyFucker · 04/06/2014 21:31

I give you Ched Evans

I give you John Terry

I give you Ron Atkinson (racism)

I give you various footballers who cheat, use prostitutes and sniff their earnings up their nose, too many to mention

I give you Richard Keys and Andy Gray (sexism)

I give you numerous reports of match fixing

I give you Qatar

I give you many instances of failed and missed drugs tests, yes you Rio Ferdinand

and these are just from my memory, as not even someone that takes much note of football

prh47bridge · 04/06/2014 21:33

He apologised in 1999. And he was defended by Lord Ashley, the disabled rights campaigner, who criticised his views but defended his right to express them and described the campaign against him as a witchhunt.

ForalltheSaints · 04/06/2014 21:35

He's been chosen because he is an ex-England manager. All the others that are still living would either charge too much or are in jobs.

If he had been a good England manager he wouldn't actually have been sacked for his comments.

ilovesooty · 04/06/2014 21:38

Ron Atkinson, Richard Keys and Andy Gray were all sacked though.

AnyFucker · 04/06/2014 21:40

only because of huge public disgust that could no longer be swept under the carpet

they did it in the first place, and obviously thought their comments were justified

Betrayedbutsurvived · 04/06/2014 21:49

Whilst I find what he said utterly disgusting, it is not true to say that he never apologised, he did, although that does not make it ok.

hazeyjane · 04/06/2014 21:53

He may have been supported by Lord Ashley, but his departure was welcomed by many other disabled rights campaigners, including Mencap.

hazeyjane · 04/06/2014 21:55

Apology

I accept I made a serious error of judgement in an interview which caused misunderstanding and pain to a number of people. This was never my intention and for this I apologise.

FiveFingerDeathPunch · 04/06/2014 21:56

yanbu
he is a wanker
thankfully people like my now adult son remember what a wanker he is.
no apology can take back the words he said,
he should have been destined to the scarp heap

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 04/06/2014 21:57

Football life is twattish.

I speak from the echelons of lower league academy life as a mother of a talented boy, it doesn't get any better!

Misogyny and 'not me Guv' at its worst.

KeepingUpAnon · 04/06/2014 22:03

I don't find it offensive tbh.

A lot of people believe in karma and reincarnation, and that your life (the good points and bad points) is a reflection of how you behaved in previous lives.

That's not to say I agree with it, but I can recognise that it is a belief that some will hold.

FiveFingerDeathPunch · 04/06/2014 22:04

then you have to accept being called a wanker. and not expect to hold a high paying job in the public eye

NoArmaniNoPunani · 04/06/2014 22:06

I'd rather have my CP than his ugly face

Cunt.

AnyFucker · 04/06/2014 22:08

Hoddle is looking a bit ropey this evening. He must have done something really shit in a previous life.

KeepingUpAnon · 04/06/2014 22:09

No need for that really. I don't need to accept being called a wanker for expressing an opinion. No more than I would call you a wanker for expressing yours. Calm down and have a read of the mn guidelines maybe? Brew

NoArmaniNoPunani · 04/06/2014 22:20

I don't think anyone was calling you a wanker keeping, they were calling GH that.

I can't be impartial on this issue as I have CP and the thought that anyone could think that's my own fault is very distressing to me. However think if GH can believe that then I'm well within my rights to call him a cunt.

FiveFingerDeathPunch · 04/06/2014 22:23

glen hoddle is a wanker. people who hold those veiws are as well imo
so not you KeepingUpAnon.
but perhaps while your not being offending, imagine it is your child/sister/brother
that people like him are talking about.
then go read the mn campaign "this is my child"

then you will get the offence

hazeyjane · 04/06/2014 22:27

we do draw the line at.......racist, ageist and disablist language

Is part of mumsnet's talk guidelines. I think that the belief that being disabled is punishment for some action in a previous life, would count as disabilist language. It is unbelievably offensive.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 04/06/2014 22:30

Agreed. It is extraordinarily offensive.
