To wonder why on earth Glenn Hoddle has got a job as a pundit for the World Cup when he has never apologised for his disablist comments?

So time is a healer then?

Effectively, ITV are endorsing his behaviour. For anyone who doesn't know, I quote:

"You and I have been physically given two hands and two legs and half-decent brains,"

"Some people have not been born like that for a reason. The karma is working from another lifetime.

"I have nothing to hide about that. It is not only people with disabilities. What you sow, you have to reap."

So disabled people are disabled, because they were very naughty boys and girls in their previous lives. He has never apologised, and has only said he was sorry that people felt offended, and that was never his intention.

What the actual fuck?! Of all the knowledgable football personalities out there, they chose him? Wow. If only all workplaces were as understanding, by that reasoning, you could intimidate someone and it would be all totally fine after a little bit of time because 'it's only your religious beliefs...'

AIBU to think ITV could have chosen a better television role model than this?

I don't want to live in a society whereby people in a position of power are able to dictate how the general public behave toward my daughter.
Oh, hang on a minute...

fromparistoberlin73 · 05/06/2014 10:42

sport is full of people who are

sexist
racist
rapists
disablist

unfortunately they all continue to thrive, including GH. this is the world we live in I am afraid. GH is a needle in a haystack

dawndonnaagain · 05/06/2014 10:46

I agree fromparis but I'm still going to stand up and shout when I come across these things.

fromparistoberlin73 · 05/06/2014 10:50

its makes me sad, an acquantance of mine was very casually raped in the car park by 2 man united footballers, this was years ago. I hate football

DrankSangriaInThePark · 05/06/2014 10:57

"I agree fromparis but I'm still going to stand up and shout when I come across these things"

And I'm going to stand next to her.

Rapists should be met with the full force of the law whoever they are.

It is not just sport. Society is full of people who are sexist, racist or disablist. Whether we like it or not they exist. They should not be given a platform for their views. They should not be employed in positions where their views will have a direct negative impact on others. But I do not believe in hounding them out of jobs where their views are irrelevant. That just feeds their feeling of persecution and tends to lead to greater support and the rise of extremist parties.

I agree that I don't want to live in a society where people in a position of power are able to dictate how the general public behave towards your daughter. But I'm not sure how that is relevant. Glenn Hoddle is not in a position of power and he certainly can't dictate how the general public behave towards your daughter.

Deverethemuzzler · 05/06/2014 11:16

Hoddle is not te Dali Lama is he?

He is a fuckwit with a less than basic understanding of what karma means and is using it to justify his fuckwittedness.

The Dali seems like a fine chap but if he got up and spouted the same crap as that footballer I would change my opinion.

Its not attacking a religion. It's attacking someone misrepresenting a religion to justify their actions.

It's hardly an unheard of phenomena is it?

dawndonnaagain · 05/06/2014 11:25

But I'm not sure how that is relevant. Glenn Hoddle is not in a position of power and he certainly can't dictate how the general public behave towards your daughter.
Should he continue to propound his views then of course it has an impact upon my dd. The more people in the public eye that are allowed to say sexist/racist/disablist rubbish, the more it becomes acceptable to others to publically voice said opinions. Ergo, impact on the people that this vitriol is directed at.

prh47bridge · 05/06/2014 13:27

That is true (assuming his views have not changed in the last 15 years). But he is not employed as a football pundit to propound his views on disabled people. Were he to use his position to propound such views I would expect him to be sacked, and quite rightly so. As far as I can see he has never repeated the views he expressed 15 years ago. He has also said that he expressed himself poorly and that his words were misconstrued. So I think the chances of him propounding objectionable views are zero. If I am proved wrong I will be first in line demanding he is sacked.

ReallyTired · 05/06/2014 15:00

Hoddle has the the right to his relgious views and infact a huge chunk of the world's population in India and China may well share his religious views.
Its no different to the fact that some muslims believe that women are inferior to men and should cover themselves head to foot in black. There are plenty of christians who believe that homosexuality is sin.

Ultimately we have no way of proving that Hoddle is wrong. In relgion one person's view is as valid as another. Personally I don't believe in Karma, but there is no way of disproving it.

Freedom of speech is the freedom to upset people and say the unacceptable. Believing that disabled people and their families are being punished for sins in a past life does not constitute a hate crime.

Disabled people have to put up with a lot worst than a has been football manager spouting his silly beliefs.

dawndonnaagain · 05/06/2014 15:05

Because we have to put up with worse doesn't mean we have to put up with his shit. In fact we shouldn't have to put up with any disablist remarks. As I said, if he's a public figure, he should keep his private views to himself.

smoothieooo · 05/06/2014 15:14

He's an utter twat as demonstrated by his absolutely fucking outrageous comments about karma and disabilities but I don't understand why ITV have hired him because he's an absolute shit football pundit. He makes Adrian Chiles seem charming and erudite.

dawndonnaagain · 05/06/2014 15:30

I'd also like to point out that this: Disabled people have to put up with a lot worse marginalises us and the struggle for equality.

caruthers · 05/06/2014 15:34

He's not in a position of power so it doesn't bother me one jot that he is a pundit.

It's the religious zealots sitting in the house of lords that grind my gears.

Carol63 · 20/08/2016 21:06

Glenn Hoddle now on BT sport. Believe me I follow the dead beat through my husbands passion for sport. Glenn Hoddle has had few respectable jobs after he disgraced himself saying my daughter and othe disabled people have done something wrong in a former life. I agree with all the examples of corrupt and 'entitled'footballers BUT I will never forgive Glenn Hoddle or his gene pool for his moronic inhuman comments. He's a liability to any channel. #btsport
