AIBU to not want dogs pissing on my new wall?

I'll caveat this by saying I am not a dog owner.

We have had a lovely white rendered wall built in our front garden. I cannot tell you how many dog owners I have seen pause at our wall to all their dogs to cock a leg and piss down it. Which is leaving marks! It is not rocket science that if you pour yellow piss down a white wall it will stain.

AIBU for this to piss me off? I'm not blaming the dogs, but couldn't the owners tug them on! It's getting to the stage I thinking of putting up a sign or banging on the window when I see it!

You need to clean the wall before you use vinegar with some bio wash powder or you will make the ammonia smell stronger to the dogs.

Meeeep · 02/06/2014 10:34

Children could pick it up on their hands.

Uptheauntie, no dog pee possibly isn't pleasant but it isn't toxic!

uptheauntie · 02/06/2014 10:38

Meeep. Dog pee possibly isn't pleasant? Possibly? So pleasant you don't want it on your shoes?

Morgause, fumes and the risk of child touching it or a toy rolling into it and the jeyes fluid getting on their hand that way, then putting their fingers in their mouth or eating something without having washed their hands properly.

I think you might be attributing too much to the owner here OP. I wouldn't be able to get my dog to pee where I wanted him to no matter what I tried!
Dog wee isn't pleasant but it doesn't kill or poison anything.
I'm not sure what harm it is doing to your wall really. It's not going to dissolve the render.

Meeeep · 02/06/2014 10:43

Ok but it's still not toxic.

uptheauntie · 02/06/2014 10:44

Thursday - I don't think it will melt the render but I spent a lot of money getting this wall built and lovely white scratch render on it. I wanted a white wall, not a white wall with yellow piss stains on it. I need to direct them to the lamp post 5 steps on.

Ah, thanks, Xihha and Meeep. I think he used it as a weedkiller and deterring dogs was secondary. It was diluted and he poured at along the base of the wall where grass and weeds were growing.

OwlCapone · 02/06/2014 10:46

I'll caveat this by saying I am not a dog owner.

Really, there was no need.

Joysmum · 02/06/2014 10:47

We live on a corner plot and this annoys me no end too. However I realise I'm not perfect either.

mentions cats and horses and stands back to see if anyone take the bait

ThursdayLast · 02/06/2014 10:47

Ah well, fair enough.
I guess as it's more important to you than them it'll probably be you that has to do something like wash the wall down.
Honestly, you can direct the owners as much as you want, but the dogs will still piss where they please.!

sunbathe · 02/06/2014 10:49

I had this on a new wall we had built.

One big dog was a particular culprit. After his visit one day, I went out with a bucket of hot water, dettol and washing powder and flung it at the wall.

Just as I was finishing, the dog owner walked back - and apologised. And hasn't let his dog pee there again.

But after a few weeks, it all seemed to stop anyway. Maybe after the newness wears off?

ceres · 02/06/2014 10:51

op - there is a world of difference between unpleasant and toxic.

however unpleasant dog pee is it is not toxic. jeyes fluid on the other hand is. non-toxic alternatives have been suggested.

ithaka · 02/06/2014 10:51

OP, I would let it go. You are fighting a losing battle & your life honestly will be pleasanter for you if you stop sweating about dog pee on an outside wall.

I mean this kindly, do not become one of those mad, sad people who bang on their windows at passers by. Did you really imagine you would grow up to be that person? Do you want to be that person? What would your child self say to the adult you?

It is just a wall, it is outside, it will not stay freshly white, relax and let nature happen. All will be well.

ithaka - yep.

AgathaF · 02/06/2014 11:12

ithaka has hit the proverbial nail on the head.

Meeeep · 02/06/2014 11:12

Agreed.

diddl · 02/06/2014 11:18

I do agree it's not wort causing a fuss over, especially if there will be gates soon to stop them coming into their drive.

But I'm amazed at the amount of owners who can't/won't have their dog momentarily on a short lead to prevent them peeing up everything!

Meeeep · 02/06/2014 11:24

So diddl where is ok for them to pee? Obviously people in more built up areas may not have access to parks, fields, woods etc and even most lamposts are directly in front of a wall which would get hit. Is having dogs wee in the middle of the pavement preferable? How would you encourage a male dog to squat?

Dogs will be dogs, they pee on things. Non toxic deterrents have been suggested to the OP. It's something which millions of people have to deal with. Personally I don't care if a dog pees on my wall, I just can't get my knickers in a twist over a bit of dog pee on a wall that separates private property and a public path.

The owners letting their dogs onto the driveway are ignorant though.

Meeeep · 02/06/2014 11:25

Commented far too much on this thread

MintyChops · 02/06/2014 11:26

YABU and a bit ridiculous.

diddl · 02/06/2014 11:27

It does depend where you live, of course.

Maybe there are more areas made up of white walls than I imagine!

wishingchair · 02/06/2014 11:39

I have a dog, do my best not to let him pee near houses, and would be irritated by it. But- I agree it's not worth getting stressed about. I've found "Green Gloop" is good for getting rid of pee smells. It's mostly used for scrubbing out stables but same principle -neutralises ammonia. And is non toxic, unlike jeyes fluid.
