to ask how to vote tactically today

in order to help keep UKIP out?

Apologies for lack of knowledge. If the European vote is a proportionately representative one (is it?), does this mean that there is no need to vote tactically?

Vivienne - do you feel that 'shaking up' the other parties is a good enough reason to vote for a party, if you don't actually share their views? I find it an odd concept, but then up here in Scotland we already have a powerful 4th party who have 'shaken' support for Labour and Conservatives. But the other parties really haven't changed because of it. Anyone who voted for SNP to teach the others a lesson have now had a chance to live with an SNP government. Which is fine, as they're actually rather good at it.

But what if UKIP get a major say in UK politics, when the people voting for them don't actually like their policies? I think it would be a dangerous experiment to try to 'use' a vote for UKIP as a protest vote against the others.

dawndonnaagain · 22/05/2014 14:52

Of course I do. VIP, but being in the community is right for some. It's about choices and getting the balance right for the person involved. It's not about being dictated to because the latest political fad says those people cost us too much and we don't like looking at them. Congregate communities may have their place but only for those that have a valid choice.

sunshinecity17 · 22/05/2014 14:55

what if UKIP get a major say in UK politics
But it's a European Election isn't it? the electorate don't historically vote the same in a general election.
There are a lot of red herrings being thrown about on here.UKIP is about getting of Europe and curbing immigration. That is the beginning, middle and the end.

gotnotimeforthat · 22/05/2014 14:58

Genuine question as like I said early I haven't researched UKIP that much..

But is the congregating communities even in this years manifesto? I know it was in 2010 but i can't find anything to suggest that it is in this one.

dawndonnaagain · 22/05/2014 15:08

It was removed in January this year. Too many complaints.

dawndonnaagain · 22/05/2014 15:13

NHS privatisation under UKIP

gotnotimeforthat · 22/05/2014 15:21

dawndonna

Thankyou for answering.
So what are the remaining policies that people are having issues with then? As so far most of the Issues raised on threads on here are not actually policies anymore.

I haven't worded that well but I'm sure you get my question. Which again Is a genuine one.

dawndonnaagain · 22/05/2014 15:33

To be honest, got, my problem is in the main, that these people making the awful statements, if elected are going to be making policy.
Other than that, Not believing in global warming. It's not a belief system, it's science, to be discussed and debated, fair enough, dismissed it ridiculous.
I don't like their stance on gay marriage, women or those with disabilities. I also believe it benefits us to stay in Europe, we are not the wonderful colonialists we like to think, we're a two bit island with very little power and staying in Europe means that we have a voice on the world stage.

gotnotimeforthat · 22/05/2014 15:44

dawn

What is their stance on gay marriage, women and disabilities?

I thought the people making the statements have left UKIP now? But I totally understand what you are saying 'the company you keep says a lot about you' sort of thing.

The problem with all of the parties is that they say they will or will not do something and then do the opposite anyway..
There should be a rule of if it was in your policies when you was elected you have to follow through with it.

Unfortunately they all tell us what we want to hear and then when elected go off and do what the hell they want.

dawndonnaagain · 22/05/2014 16:17

You have a point there got!
They don't agree with gay marriage. The have stated that women with children are worth less in the workplace than men and that women should not expect maternity leave.

gotnotimeforthat · 22/05/2014 16:47

dawndonna

Well if women shouldn't expect maternity leave do you think they would be okay with them returning to work with a baby hanging off the boob? Grin

dawndonnaagain · 22/05/2014 16:53

I'm past trying that one, got Grin

gotnotimeforthat · 22/05/2014 17:06

Well if we have a DC2 I will have to try it and report back to you Wink

OvertiredandConfused · 22/05/2014 17:12

Regardless of his in my opinion awful views, it might also be worth remembering that Nigel Farrage has one of the worst records for bothering to actually turn up in the European Parliament to vote.

BumWad · 22/05/2014 17:31

If anybody is on twitter #whyimvotingukip is pretty hilarious

to ask how to vote tactically today
MoominAndMiniMoom · 22/05/2014 17:40

I voted for the first time today. Laughed at the amount of 'Britain First', 'No Immigration' parties. Nearly spoiled the ballot paper. And then voted for the least shit party.

Is this what voting is? Hmm

StarGazeyPond · 22/05/2014 17:42

Laughed at the amount of 'Britain First', 'No Immigration' parties.

Perhaps instead of laughing, you should actually take note and start thinking why?

dawndonnaagain · 22/05/2014 17:48

Moomin. Yeah, pretty much these days. There used to be clear lines and parties with principles, but that went out of the window once Blair came to power, and I say that as an ex Labour Councillor.
I voted Green today.

Viviennemary · 22/05/2014 17:48

Indeed. Perhaps if people had stopped laughing then UKIP might not be the success it appears to be. Still we haven't had the results yet.

MoominAndMiniMoom · 22/05/2014 18:30

Stargazey I'm well aware why, I just think its laughable that these parties have seen UKIP's sudden popularity and decided its okay to be racist. It's incredibly sad too, of course. I know a couple of people who feel that way - members of my dad's family.

All my family who can vote - myself included - voted Green.

StarGazeyPond · 22/05/2014 18:33

Australia, USA, New Zealand, Canada - are they also 'racist' for wanting capped immigration?

dawndonnaagain · 22/05/2014 18:55

We have capped immigration. Not wanting to live next door to a Romanian is racist. Britain First is racist. The BNP are racist.

HesterShaw · 22/05/2014 19:00

Australia is a famously racist society actually. I have never met so unapologetically racist people in all my life as I did there.
