To wonder how many of you not on the organ donor register

Would be happy to accept an organ on behalf of yourself or a relative?

If you are, excluding health reasons, why are you not on the organ donor register? Is it just a case of not getting round to it, if so

Receiving an organ is not, and should not be, a reward for good behaviour.

The only test should be clinical need.

TheRealAmandaClarke · 20/05/2014 20:04

I can't give blood.
Does that mean I can't donate my organs?
I mean they can have em. But I've not registered. I have to confess I'm a teeny bit superstitious about it.
Not about donating my organs. But about Registering myself as a donor.
Which I accept makesme sound like an idiot. Blush

gordyslovesheep · 20/05/2014 20:38

I'm on it

as others have said I also give blood and am on the bone marrow register

I'd urge everyone who can to give blood - it's easy

Pinkelephanty · 20/05/2014 21:01

I'm on it but before I got around to signing up dh knew I wanted to donate so he could sign the papers if need be.

LithaR · 20/05/2014 22:03

My ds and I are on the list for everything except eyes due to our faith. Although my ds has first dibs :)

nokidshere · 20/05/2014 22:08

I'm on the donor register but I can't give blood (had a transfusion) or bone marrow (too old!!). I've also told my family that they are welcome to give my body to medical science if they want - even if it's just to avoid funeral costs!

My husband is not on the register but he knows that I will say yes if that time ever comes - it's only because he is squeamish and superstitious not for any deep and meaningful reason so I will feel no guilt at overriding his choice.

TheRealAmandaClarke · 20/05/2014 22:14

Ok nokids that's useful to know. I had a transfusion too, so same reason it seems.

RabidFairy · 20/05/2014 22:15

Me, DH and my children are all on the register. As are my sister and her partner and many of our extended family. My mum is only alive today thanks to the generosity of a lung transplant 5 years ago.

I would like to have a card that says I only want my organs to go to those prepared to give to others.

The selfish buggers can go to hell IMO.

"I've also told my family that they are welcome to give my body to medical science if they want - even if it's just to avoid funeral costs!"

nokids, while your family can agree to have your organs donated without being on the Donor Register, to donate your body to science, you personally will need to sort that out, most likely with your local medical school.

I am very grateful to the people who did donate their bodies so that we could learn at university. I have also been on the Organ Donor Register since I was a child and would encourage everyone to have chats with their family about their wishes.

A big regret for me is that I never gave blood before I had transfusions. I had to wait quite a while for my last transfusion as there was a shortage of my blood type. I did try to go a couple of times to donate but was turned away for various reasons, I could have made more of an effort to go when I would have been allowed. Only now do I see the importance of giving blood and it's too late for me to do it. Thanks so much to the blood doners out there! Every day I think about how grateful I am to the people who's blood I have received. Sorry I know the thread is not about blood donation but as PP have mentioned it I wanted to put my two cents in!

I registered as an organ donor a few years ago, but from what I can find out it looks like my organs can't be used now because of the transfusions.

nokidshere · 20/05/2014 22:47

Dino thanks I didn't know that will sort it out tomorrow Grin
