New thread for all the Chalet School fans!

To be fair I have a bit if trouble with English most days, to chat fluently in French and German would finish me off even if all my mistakes were pointed out and I was made to repeat the phrase 10 times to try and make me fluent.

Of course I might have a gift for languages like Biddy so it's a bit strange she persists in 'irishisms' well into adulthood having not heard any from the age of 10.

Len does medieval French and Italian in 6 th form, I mean what a fucking swot!

WhyIamHere don't do it. I still shiver at Reg being an evil rapist and MaryLou and Sybil being marriage wreckers.

WilsonFrickett · 27/05/2014 14:03

Kathie Ferrars is definitely 'prettily accented' by the time they're at Redheads and that lot.

Maybe a pretty accent comes with your first Christmas bonus? I mean, the poor teachers don't get anything else fun do they? They have to spend their Saturday's being 'entertained' by big galumphing girls, their afternoons out having English tea with Joey and their half-terms rescuing children from storms/glaciers/fatal illnesses. It's not a barrel of laughs.

WilsonFrickett · 27/05/2014 14:04

Ohmychrist I can't believe that errant apostrophe in Saturdays, I'll pay my fine on the way out of the thread Blush

DeWee · 27/05/2014 14:28

Can't imagine "Ohmychrist" was allowed either Wilson Grin

I agree with the assessment of CG grow up. Felt like someone writing it being deliberately vindictive. I read it in a charity shop before suggesting to the manager that it should be removed from the children's section.
I believe there was some skulduggery with getting it published too. One of the Chalet School clubs was tricked into supporting it by the author sharing carefully selected bits that weren't too bad. Only when the whole thing was published they found out what it was like.

The only thing with Mary Lou, is I could see her being a marriage wrecker. She'd rush in to help because they were "doing it wrong" and end up falling for the man, and feeling at least she could help him by "doing it right".
I don't think she had a "this is going too far" off switch.

SelectAUserName · 27/05/2014 17:20

Dear me. I've just read a 3-page precis of "CG Grow Up" and what a litany of misery, death, despair, infidelity and pregnancy in unhappy circumstances that seems to be. Interesting that a couple of the old girls described as doing well for themselves are Betty Wynne-Davies and Yseult Pertwee - it's obviously written by someone who not only didn't buy into the 'virtues' of the Chalet School but also wanted to trample all over them.

I definitely won't be adding that to the Amazon wishlist!

Revengeofthechocolatebunny · 27/05/2014 17:31

Yseult - how would you begin to pronounce that? I'm sure that it's not the "izzerlt" that I read it as.

Just reading the Lintons at the chalet school and waiting to see what Thekla does to get expelled when Evadne wasn't expelled for deliberately ignoring instruction and end up with an explosion which blew all the windows out of the "chemmy lab" - how much mischief can one 15 year old do before it's not funny?

Or did EBD keep her in for the American slang she would utter?

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 27/05/2014 17:39

I hear Yseult as Izz-oolt, in my head - no idea if this is right or not.

DeWee · 27/05/2014 17:41

But wasn't Evadne's "experiment" not her fault entirely? I think it was one of those Chalet School blames someone else... wasn't the stuff left out by one of the 6th?

I remember being somewhat surprised that Thekla got expelled. I was expecting her to have an accident, be saved by Jo and then declare herself a true Chalet School girl now.

As far as I can tell the main reason she is expelled is she doesn't express regret for what she did. Won't spoil any further though. Wink

thebodylovesspring · 27/05/2014 17:47

Wilson honey lamb try great Caesars bathmat or my sainted aunt Sempronia it's even better than an oh fuck*
Which that commen girl Joan Baker favours.

Now is Maeve a short?

MaryLou as a sex therapist. wonderful. Imagine her bell like voice shouting not like that you idiot like this

thebodylovesspring · 27/05/2014 17:49

Oh didn't one of the 6th form
Leave out dangerous chemicals. Of course it wasn't Bills fault as the teacher in charge.

Not to worry parents understand when the girls fall off cliffs/down ravines/into rivers/lost in the snow/chemically burnt and nearly blinded by a nasty boy at the dentists.

All in a days work.

thebodylovesspring · 27/05/2014 17:51

DeWee she was expelled for hating Joey! Worst crime possible.

JuniperTisane · 27/05/2014 17:57

Maeve's just an irish name isn't it?

I thought Thekla got expelled for bullying Joyce didn't she?

Who was it boiled the clock? That's possibly the most bizarre attempt at a prank I ever heard.

WilsonFrickett · 27/05/2014 18:16

Yes thebody my lamb. I will report myself to Matey for plain sewing, mouth washed out with carbolic (and some drugged milk, natch)

thebodylovesspring · 27/05/2014 18:43
Grin

I am traumatised! Just read a short story on Sally Denny where Jack and Jem are lovers.

OMFG.

hels71 · 27/05/2014 19:02

I think Evvy didn't get expelled for her many sins as she was just careless/didn't think, whereas Thekla was mean on purpose and deliberate tried to get someone else into huge trouble?

thebodylovesspring · 27/05/2014 19:06

Evvy was a good egg. Thekla bullied Joyce and spat at sophie.

Above all she hated Joey and was a Prussian.

WilsonFrickett · 27/05/2014 19:07

Evvy was simply one of the wickedest middles who ever lived. No-one ever got expelled for that...

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 27/05/2014 19:36

Evvy boiled the clock, naturally. Which reminds me, I haven't read the transcript of Exploits yet.

Alicebannedit · 27/05/2014 19:45

I am traumatised! Just read a short story on Sally Denny where Jack and Jem are lovers

Did it end with Madge and Jo advising each other to LTB? Grin

Whyamihere · 27/05/2014 19:59

Thebody, that's the story I read, as I said, an eye opener. Jem was very distraught when Jack goes missing in Highland Twins....

Whyamihere · 27/05/2014 20:03

We've just finished camp and there is a line in there said by Miss Wilson 'Many more incidents such as we have had would have seen me with white hair...' Do you think she had a premonition!!

DeWee · 27/05/2014 20:06

Exploits is, I think, the only early one I haven't read all the way through. Sad The copy in the school library had about 20-40 pages missing which included the clock episode. Did they think they were mending it?

SockQueen · 27/05/2014 20:14

Yes DeWee, she took it apart because it wasn't working and then boiled all the components. Yet another brilliant "howler"

JuniperTisane · 27/05/2014 21:09

Not a joke then? I forgot. Its been some years since I read it. They put the clock back on the wall and left it to chime the hour but it carried on chiming about 200 times I think.

DeWee · 27/05/2014 21:34

Going back to the What Katie did series, isn't that what happens to the clock Dorry Carr mends too?
