New thread for all the Chalet School fans!

OP posts:

Another vote for leaving 'Chalet Girls Grow Up' well alone. I found it hugely depressing and kind of unfair in the horrors meted out to some of the characters.

thebodylovesspring · 27/05/2014 21:52

Especially Len, ok she was a swot but a really likable one.

The death of her dd was really upsetting and depressing. Hated it.

thebodylovesspring · 27/05/2014 21:58

WhyamIhere I feel sullied. Grin

I mean if you boiled a clock it just wouldn't work? Would it?

What is it with the fourths?

SockQueen · 27/05/2014 22:15

Everyone knows the Fourths are never up to any good. I think at least one mistress/prefect commented on their desire for a cane...

DeWee · 27/05/2014 22:17

I think CG grow up reminds me of the play "Look Back in Anger"-only not so well written. The characters are willfully distructing themselves for the plot only. At least "Look Back in Anger" has some good quotes. CG Grow up has all the depressing bits of it without the light touches of humour which makes the play almost watchable. (apologies for anyone who liked Look Back, but I hated it)

Revengeofthechocolatebunny · 28/05/2014 07:52

I am reading an entire CS book a day now. I have a v v untidy house, my clean washing is sitting on my dressing table from about Friday waiting to be put away, and we have totally run out of milk. No kaffee today!

I will write to Joey for advice, that's what I will do. No doubt she will send Anna across to make me see the error of my slovenly ways.

hels71 · 28/05/2014 09:11

Anna or Rosli would have everything sorted in minutes............

WilsonFrickett · 28/05/2014 09:49

Revenge I'm disappointed in you. Joey managed to drop 11 kids, invent a portable fanjo holder, interfere in at least three schoolgirl affairs a week, hold English tea parties with home baking on Tuesdays and Saturdays, go to church and prayers four times a day, eat 6 meals a day (and this is something we will be discussing later my lambs), put her own children to bed (quelle horreurs) AND churn out two masterpieces of literature a year... Just sayin

WilsonFrickett · 28/05/2014 09:52

OK following on from ^^. Just how much did these girls eat?

Breakfast: rolls, coffee, jam (sneered upon by all English new schools)
Break: milk and biscuits. If on an expedition or similar, coffee with featherbeds of cream and cakes.
Lunch: Delicious soup and veal with melty potatoes (every fricken day, or else it's the only Austrian meal EBD knew)
Afternoon break: milky coffee with pretty twists of bread, small cakes. Again, if out kaffee und kunchen with featherbeds, etc.
Dinner: more veal and melty potatoes.

They would have been the size of actual chalets, no?

revenge matey will be gunning for you. No humped mattress in the middle?

You must have been to a council school my lamb. I think you need Anna, Rosli and Karen from school. They will sort out your house.

Joey will be along soon to give you parenting classes but she's just pushing out the quads.

When they have learnt unquestioning obedience, around 3 days, she will be round.

thebodylovesspring · 28/05/2014 09:58

Yes the food!! Joeys lavish teas and boxes of chocolates between lunch and dinner!

The woman would be freakin huge!

Daisymasie · 28/05/2014 11:18

You're a disgrace Revenge. I think your children should be fostered by Joey. They can join her other 6,000 wards/orphans/strays/distant relatives/kids of friends and might even get to become Head Girl given their connection to 'the sacred one'.

Revengeofthechocolatebunny · 28/05/2014 11:26

I will try harder. It's just so hard to concentrate every morning after my deep sleep - I don't remember much after the glass of milk at night.

I don't have a real family either. Only 1 DD. Joey must really feel that I am not a real chalet girl but her eyes will soften and she will be gentle with me as she points out the error of my ways. I will get over being common!

Obesity at the Chalet School... year 6 weighing discovers the only child not to be overweight is the child who arrived two weeks ago because her mum/dad/family member was urgently admitted to the san. Matey has been trying to feed her up since arrival.
The floor under Daffodil dormi has to be reinforced after Mary-Lou jumped out of bed in a hurry to help someone and fell through the floor.

Joey arrives to suggest that Anna can bottle fruit for the whole school this week for the rest of term so they can have it for lunch.
And later, when the diet menu is set in, enrages the staff by just dropping into an important meeting, and telling them all about the lovely meals they used to eat in Tyrol.

WilsonFrickett · 28/05/2014 11:36

Grin DeWee

I wonder how mad this thread looks to any MNers who aren't Chaletians?

DeWee · 28/05/2014 12:07

Wilson I would try writing it in full, but fear GGBP wouldn't publish it. Grin

SelectAUserName · 28/05/2014 12:08

Revenge, Joey would take you out to look at the mountains until you felt close to God and then remind you gently that cleanliness is next to Godliness, and it is Him you are offending by not tidying your house.

So which are your favourite CS books, my lambs? Mine would be:

  1. Exile - I love the melodramatic flight from Austria, and I admire EBD for not shying away from writing about the tragic results of anti-Semitic mobs in a children's book.
  2. Rivals - Joey's (in)famous bout of pleuro-pneumonia!
  3. New Mistress - I like the character of Kathie Ferrars, the new-teacher rather than endless new-pupil perspective and the fact that someone manages not to swoon at Mary-Lou's feet at first meeting!

I also have a soft spot for The Wrong Chalet School, as it's the first one I ever read.

Daisymasie · 28/05/2014 12:13

I loved Three Go to the Chalet School. I can't remember why it appealed so much when I was a child but must locate a copy and re-read to see if it still has the same magic.

haggisaggis · 28/05/2014 12:23

"Exile" probably the best - although as a child I preferred reading the Swiss ones. Would love to read "Carola Storms" again as I remember enjoying that - also would like to re-read "Gay from China" and "Tom Tackles" .

DeWee · 28/05/2014 12:25

As a child my favourites were Princess, and Problem, so I still have soft spots for them.

I think now probably Jo of simply for the lovely Christmas scene, and I'd agree on New Mistress and Three go. Exile is lovely writing, and very forceful, but not the escapism from life which is what I really read CS for. It is one of the few I've got unabridged though.

Rivals irritated me even as a child with all the wailing over Joey's illness, and hardly a mention of, was it Maureen(?) who it says later never really recovered and died later from complications. Of course even the Saints were much more worried about Jo. Confused

Beeyump · 28/05/2014 12:33

I'm very sad to say that I have never read Three Go Shock What goes on?

Whyamihere · 28/05/2014 12:40

For me it's -

Exiles
Gay (cry every time at the scene where Jacynth finds out about her aunt)
Three go - I think because at this point Mary Lou is an attractive character

DeWee · 28/05/2014 12:52

Beeyump Three go is when Mary Lou, Verity Anne and someone else (Ruth Barnes?) start at the chalet school. Or perhaps Clem Barrett is meant to be the third.

Mary Lou and Verity Anne both have absent fathers who turn out to be on the same (doomed) expedition because obviously that's what they would have done for the war effort. Wink
Mary Lou's only friend ever was Clem, and she's wrenched away for them to move next to Joey
